Grew up on Barry rd about 50m from the station. I recall the sirens and lights as they loaded the trains at the ford at night. This was in the 70s, into the early 80's maybe - I don't really recall it later than that but maybe I slept heavier :-). Yabbies used to be caught out of that creek.
This is a Very Good Video i came across on your sight. Really incredible stuff around that area. I sort of wondered about this network of rail. Really Well Done snd Narration is Superb. Good One Mate. Regards
The Ford siding extended almost to Barry Rd, parallel to upfield station. Ford engines and parts were transported from Geelong to campellelfield in louvre vans. Not just finished product shipped out
Might do this walk someday didn't know that line existed, found you random in my feed I was out that area recently for unrelated reasons and found $20 sticking out of a Myki machine at Fawkner station! I've subbed , south east Melbourne 🙂
Would this have been the same track that the Hitachi body shells were transported to Somerton, on temporary bogies between match wagons, back in the 70s???
You know what? I actually enjoyed this video! I went to Upfield back in June aboard the Steamrail Member's Tait tour, and didn't think of anything beyond Upfield. Then on a subsequent flight back to Melbourne (From Adelaide, where I live) we were flying overhead this bit and I noted the link to Somerton. Your video fills in the gap for me on what exists down there, so thanks :)
@@Victorian_steam really? In summer there's heaps of Tiger, Red Bellied Black's and Copperheads around Melbourne. If you can hear crickets on summer days/nights then guaranteed snakes are around.
In the early 70's when based at Wodonga Locomotive Depot we used to run a down standard gauge train from Ford factory to Albury where a NSW crew would take it further. Usually the VR used a T class loco to haul the train.
I hope the reopen the line for both vline and metro and do the craigieburn line via upfield or broady
I hear there’s a plan!
@@Victorian_steam hope so because it means if I have to go to craigie I have 2 options hahahah
I love the cement mixer barrels. So THAT'S what happens to them!!!!!

Wow! Would’ve been cool to see!
We sent a lot of jumbo steel coil from Port Kembla Steelworks to Somerton back in the day.
This stopped in the mid to late 2000's
Wow! That’s interesting!

Very interesting! Wonder if I can dig up some pics of that
Victorian Railways BFW vans. Big vans 23 mtrs long, and built right up to maximum size allowed by the VR loading gauge.
I believe one of the sidings was Martin and Albright Steel siding which was Standard Gauge for shipment of Steel from interstate.
Awesome! Cheers for that !!
Did you know that snakes love blackberry bushes especially in Summer?. Love the video......
Cheers!!!
For someone relatively new to trains mate your videos are awesome really enjoying them. Thanks 😁
Thanks a lot!! I’m so glad you’re enjoying the content!!
Love the vid, I wish it was reopened.

@6:37-look at the way those rails have fractured!!! What would cause this???
Thanks for this. It's heart breaking to see them not being used.
No worries! It definitely can be
Love your beanie 😊
Cheers! Will James railways is the seller of these !

One of the other sidings was for visy . Transporting paper
Awesome cheers!
Wouldn't it make sense to fix up this line and use it for the new Somerton freight terminal instead of all trains going through the Broadmeadows line?
There are talks for re open, not sure how serious
@@Victorian_steam Be great. Same for Mornington, Healesville and Whittlesea as mentioned a few months back! 👌
@@garynewton1263hopefully one day!
It is government policy to reduce the rail network in Victoria as the cost of maintaining it is too prohibitive
Makes for more exploring!
In summer Tiger snakes frequent blackberry bushes.
I’ve still Never seen a snake out and about yet
