Climbing into your cistern without properly ventilating it first could be fatal. Microbes growing in the tank could generate gases that can displace the oxygen. I recommend you get a blower and put a suction hose in the bottom and ventilate for at least an hour prior to entry. Or buy an oxygen meter so that you can sample the atmosphere prior to entry. CO2 and CO are both heavier than air.

Monsoons have been getting smaller for the last 20 years. When I arrived in Arizona in 2000 and experienced my first monsoon it was crazy and now it’s like a California winter rain storm, no comparison to the early 2000s. Best of luck. You’re on the right track.
Yes I am as excited about water as you! Just went through hurricane Hanna in TX. All my ponds and swales are full. 😀. Oh so happy! I am ready to dig some more because there was quite a bit of water that left our property. The past 2 years we have had one big rain event and not a lot after that the rest of the year. I ❤️ rain!
Oh my yes!! Everything takes so much longer, more money, more things to repair or create when building anything 🤔 .... we're clearing land & will be rain water harvesting for our water needs so we will be working on that project in a couple of weeks...if all goes well but you two know how that goes, yeah? 🤪😄 I enjoy your videos!
About 3 weeks ago Australia had what they call flying ant day with huge swarms of black clouds of them things. Wouldnt be surprised if they've migrated all the way across to the U.S.. Especially considering all the other strange crazy, and weird things that have happened just this yr alone!
Yep I learned early on, however much time you think a project is going to take multiply your guess by 2. Also, however much money you think the project will take multiply your guess by 1.5
That is so exciting to get some rain . some it better then none . I wish we would get some rain here in MARICOPA been dry few times thought it was gonna rain but nope.. Aww I gotta get down to my brothers home in sierra vista to chill in that rain lol . well happy harvesting all that water later .
The bugs have been different for sure . Frank.n bugs we think 🤔 seen a video with locus. Frank n bugs too weird Keep doing what your doing hitos were proud of you.
I’ve been watching and learning so I can implement water recycling in my earthbag house build. Can you show us what you use to pump the saved water out, and what you’re using to filter it?
YES I DO get excited over rain!!! I'm currently in Las Vegas NV but want to purchase land in Northern NV and will have to harvest rain water just like you. Even though in the city we are connected to city utilities when we get rain I put out several 5 gallon buckets to catch the water coming off the roof and use it to water my fruit trees! I envy the lifestyle you currently have and I am trying to get there myself!! During this storm system you just had we were driving through Arizona and was able to enjoy a little bit of the rain ourselves. LOVE LOVE LOVE the rain jealous you had thunder. Keep on Keeping on sending best wishes
That's so awesome! I love hearing about people harvesting the rain. Even in buckets. We still do that. Every little bit helps. Good luck on your journey.
And with that rain you all have officially gotten more than us this year. We have been scary dry and haven't seen any since end of March. Perfecting those systems but still a good water grab your first go. Hopefully those ants are just migrating and not settling in. Great update. Thanks for the share!
@@ourselfreliantlife Had to look it up but our average rainfall for a year is 13 inches and our snowfall is 52. This has been a bizarre year though and haven't had any rain since March. 4 months in a row now including nothing for Spring. :(
I you build swales or ditches on contour it will also help you save, spread and sink water into the ground, which can be used by the plants or can be used as ground water.
Hi I'm new to your channel and think what you're doing is great keep it up. Don't forget to put gutters under the solar panels to catch more rain. Happy building. 👷♀️👷♂️
Gotta get creative to get all of that water! We use buckets on the corners of the RV, too! Definitely adds up over a few rains. Nice work, as always. 👍
respect for building all of your structures the way you did, by hand......... I was shocked by the rain gutters that you are making out of concrete and chicken wire,.... that must weigh a lot, how does that stay airborne ??
That helicopter might also be for rescue. I'm from Tucson and there is always someone during monsoons who gets trapped by quickly rising waters. Nice channel. My family hopes to buy some land soon in Vail and do some homesteading.
I DO FIND RAIN THAT EXCITING! My little 4 barrel system has stopped me from using my well for watering my large garden. All rainwater. And it needs to rain more because I am 18 gallons left since we haven't had hardly any rain in 2 weeks. (Hey, it's New England, that serious!)
That's really good. It also shows what you can do given a particular climate. You don't need to invest as much in your rain system since you get water more regularly.
I don't see you have any first flushes in your system. Is your method an alternative method and what are the consequences? Been really enjoying you both building your water catchment system and I see how it works for your property.
Thank you! No first flush. I don't think it will be a huge issue here. There isn't too much organic matter around and we're screened off. A little dust would take a long time to build up.
Are you going to dome the top of the cistern.? I think that would help move the water down into the cistern faster, less evaporation that way. Thank you for your videos. I'm learning a lot. Right now I'm in the planning stage for an addition on to my off grid sustainable home in the desert.💞👍
@@ourselfreliantlife A little. I don't think quite as bad as this year, though. Although we still have over a month of monsoons. We could get hammered in that time period.
Can you harvest ground water using prevention of soil errosion techniques like in desert etclike moon wells etc.are poly cubes dark enough to stop algae growth?you can haul them in like midges using fan.you need bigger flow. Like via duct around edge thst keeps flowing even after its stopped raining a bigver flow.
I was also thinking about using abs or pvc pipe. But please, give me your expert advice since you didnt go that way. I was also wondering if wider or deeper gutters would increase efficiency. Thanks
That time of year for flying ants. The winged ants are usually males. They go away after a few days. Looking good. Wondering why you replaced the aluminum guttering with the ferrocement? But you are right about everything taking more time and work and money than you plan for. :-)
Would love to see the water flowing into the poly tank from the shed roof. Fly ants was a nightmare. Hope they did not wash into your tanks. Keep trucking and stay safe!
I'll have to get some footage, but it's working so well. I don't know if it would flow as well during a really crazy storm, but we're getting that water.😀 Thanks CB!
Flying ants usually means mating flights. Nuptial flights. The new queens fly off and get mated with the males. Similar to bees. The newly mated queens bite off their wings and find a whole to crawl into to start a new colony. The males die after mating. Great job on your water catchment. I'm so proud of you guys.
The copter is a Robinson. R44 looks like. I've been in a R22. Run on regular gas. Have you looked into foamcrete? I'd paint your gutters with latex exterior, or I suppose a rubberized sealant.
Real question..... How are you planning on checking in he level of the cistern? Or what is the plan to check it? A piece of clear pipe in the house to visually see the level?
@@ourselfreliantlife not telling y'all what to do but as you bring the water into your house you could put a (what was that 2 inch pipe) tee with clear tubing up past the top of the cistern and that would give you a visual from inside the house. May or may not work for you all.

It will gravity feed to the house and from there we'll pump it. We'll show that and the filter when the time comes.

Hey sir, have you ever tried checking the PH of the water?
In think regarding how you build your system will need lots of maintaining
Been watching your videos, so Two questions #1. How much rain do you get a year? #2. How many acres do you have?
40 acres and 13 inches annually.
I don't see you have any first flushes in your system. Is your method an alternative method and what are the consequences? Been really enjoying you both building your water catchment system and I see how it works for your property.

We won't dome it exactly, but we'll give it a slope so that it runs off faster.

If you like rain come to Ireland this year it 300 days out of 330 so far if you dig a hole in the ground here you would have a small pond lol
