How to protect container vegetables from rain, wind and hail

  • In Wellington, our common challenges to container gardening include the weather. It isn't unusual for temperature, wind and precipitation to fluctuate wildly within a day. Unrelenting heavy rain, gale force winds, and hail storms visit us particularly in winter and spring.
Checking the weather forecast regularly gives us time to give some protection to vulnerable plants, especially the ones that are less hardy or are too big to fit under roof eaves. In general, we don't like bringing outdoor plants into the house unless these are small seedlings.
Protecting the container vegetables won't guarantee they will always survive the elements but at least we can give it our best shot and hope for the best.

@VanessaFerdinands Thanks! Most garden centres will have these hoops. Bunnings or Mitre10 might have these too.
