This movie was directed by Joel Schumacher and based on a book by John Grisham. Another movie that collaborated on that you should definitely check out is "A Time To Kill", it has one heck of a cast. (does deal with some rather heavy subject matter though, a good movie but definitely not a light hearted one) John Grisham is well known for writing legal dramas/thrillers, which makes sense since he's also a lawyer.

Fun fact. I grew up with Brad. He got into acting through D.A.R.E. when the were looking for a "street smart kid." He used to tell people he was "Fredrick" as an alias and dude loved to party until he isolated most people away from him. I rember her would kick people out of his house who brought up the movie Sleepers. He went way too young. Us Oakwood area kids know the real dude.
When you said this was a 50/50 movie I thought how could so many not like it but then you said the 50% who saw it recommended it while the other 50% never saw it. That means that nearly 100% of the people who did see it liked it. This movie came out in a year of many blockbuster movies and didn't get the attention due it because of that. "A Time to Kill" is another one you will enjoy.
This is a deep cut but Brad Renfro and Joseph Mazerello (the boy from Jurassic Park) star in a movie called The Cure that was released in 1995. They work so well off each other and are incredibly impressive kid actors. Very 90s summer movie with bigger themes about some serious subjects. It’s a little blue in its language but it is also very tender. My favorite movie. Just edging out It’s a Wonderful Life and Dumb and Dumber.
One of my favorite movies. What an all Star cast ! And considering that this was Brad Renfro's, ( Mark Sway) , movie debut. He did an incredible acting job not to mention his handsome but hard lived face was absolutely perfect for his character of a trailer trash kid growing up in abject poverty. He was as street smart as he was confidently sassy and quick witted. He of course became an instant heartthrob with all the teenage girls, ( and I'm sure more than just a few boys as well) , and he was suddenly gracing the covers of all the teeny heartthrob magazine covers of the day. An incredibly talented actor who unfortunately fell quickly into the Hollywood drug scene as many successful child actors do once they grow older and begin to lose some of their childhood effervescence and the job offers begin drying up. RIP. Brad Renfro. You were a shooting Star that lit up our skies for a far too short period of time.
Love this movie next to Pelican Brief it's my favorite John Gresham based movie Seriously if you like this you will LOVE Pelican Brief (Julia Roberts and Denzel Washington are the best acting team) Talk about stressful!
Good movie. RIP Brad. Another film with him in it: Tom & Huck with Jonathan Taylor Thomas. Tommy, Brad, and Susan all did a great job. Nice reaction Ashleigh.
I’d be hilarious if the guy with the car in the opening scene looked at Brad Renfro after he traumatized him and said “….and that’s why you never smoke cigarettes” and it turns out his mom set the whole thing up to teach him a lesson a la Arrested Development.
i was so into this movie when i was 12 (around the time it came out). i watched it so many times. i was obsessed with susan sarandon at that age. rip brad renfro, he was a good actor, in a bunch of stuff around this time.
I'm so glad you liked it. This is one of my favorites. I was only a couple years older than Mark Sway when this came out so there was plenty of appeal in this one for me. I read the book first and loved it and then saw the movie in the theater. Still my favorite of the John Grisham adaptations.
The awesome judge who was putting everyone in their place was played by Ossie Davis. He played Chuck, the owner of the bait shop in “Grumpy Old Men”. ❤
If you like Brad Renfro (R.I.P.), his follow-up film, The Cure (1995), is a must-watch. It’s probably my favourite movie of all time; either that or Jurassic Park. I can recite both from beginning to end if that’s any indication of how astounding The Cure is. No one’s really heard of it, but it ain’t an indie movie either (produced by Universal and released theatrically). You’d have the distinction of being the first TH-camr to react to it, and I’d do anything to even have it *considered*. Get those tissues ready, though! ETA: now having had time to watch the whole video, if The Client brought Ashleigh to tears, The Cure would totally wreck her.
I remember the summer of 1994 very well - I was 14. And I remember loving this movie when my mom took me and my brothers to see it. I think the reason we don't hear it talked about and why a lot of people haven't seen it is because that summer was overshadowed by a lot of heavy hitters like True Lies, Speed, The Lion King and Forrest Gump
This movie was based on a John Grisham novel....the king of legal suspense thrillers. During the 1990s and early 2000s, many of John Grisham's novels were made into big Hollywood movies. A few of them are: ' - The Firm (starring Tom Cruise), - ;The Client' ' - 'A Time To Kill' - The Pelican Brief (starring Julia Robers and Denzil Washington) - The Chamber - 'The Rainmaker (Matt Damon) - 'Runaway Jury' - Christmas With The Kranks Also., his novels are very addictive...lol. I've read them all, and IMHO, his best novels have not yet been made into movies.
I remember seeing this in the theater and being traumatized. Had such a crush on Brad Renfro RIP. I was on a quest for years to find Elvis PEZley and finally scored some in 2007. 💗
This is one of my sister's favorite movies. She watched it over it over again when she was younger. More suggestions... For suspense, Breakdown with Kurt Russell. Very stressful, but great. That Thing You Do with Tom Hanks. You'll smile for an hour straight, even when singing along.
You missed a young William H. Macy as the Doctor and Anthony LaPaglia as the knife, there are so many great character actors in this one. The guy you hate's name is Will Patton and he's been in over a hundred films and tv. He plays a great creeper. You should watch him in Desperately Seeking Susan. And if you haven't seen it yet, William H. Macy in Fargo!
The main kid in this (Brad Renfro) passed away in 2008. His grandmother, who accompanied him during his early acting career, died in her home of a broken heart, just seventeen days after his death. 😔
I love this movie. It's based on a John Grisham book, which I read not long after watching the movie. I grew up watching this movie. In fact, I saw this in the movie in the theater with my grandma when it came out. This was the start of my Brad Renfro crush. LOL, I was 13. Ok, so you should also check out the movie The Cure., but make sure you have a box of tissues on hand cuz it will probably make you cry. If you wanna continue your John Grisham kick, you should check out A Time To Kill. Also heads up make sure you got tissue on hand.
Man i miss these kinds of movies , not just based on J Grisham but love those 90’s investigative courtroom thrillers. Pelican brief, Disclosure, the firm, primal fear, not court but hand that rocks the cradle
Yes, this was a great movie. Saw it by accident one afternoon while taking a break from writing my thesis. Loved it. Great performances, twists, etc. kudos to you for watching it. And do not apologise for your accentuated southern accent (yes, I picked it up as I was watching your review)…you reminded me of a good friend and fellow student from the early 2000s who has a glorious southern accent (Alabama).
this was one of my favorite movies growing up! it used to come on cable all the time, and it was one where, no matter what part was on, I had to sit down and watch the whole thing. thank you so much for this amazing reaction, Ashleigh! 😃
Back in the 90's, my middle school created an experimental class called Intro To Film and this was one of the movies we watched and made essays on how it was filmed. I loved the class and THIS movie. The following school year, in English/literature class, we watched this film. I was so happy to watch it again. We broke down how well it was written. Due to these classes, I fell in love with the movie and had so much respect for those who created it. I also, eventually watched it again for a law class I had in another school. This movie was a big deal when it came out. Glad to see this reaction Ashleigh. Love your videos.
One of the finest suspense films ever made and way too unknown today. I appreciate you bringing it back to a modern day audience. Brad Renfro was a standout in this and every film he made in his tragically short career. I have always wondered what we would have seen if his life had not been cut so short. R.I.P. to a phenomenally talented person.
The show on the TV was _Alice,_ which starred the late Linda Lavin, who passed on Dec. 29. Clearly the universe is telling you to have a Linda Lavin memorial watch. The actress in that scene, however, was not Linda Lavin; it was Polly Holliday, who played Flo. The annoying photographer was played by Dan Castallaneta, who is the voice of Homer Simpson. Very excited for your watch of the original _Ocean's Eleven._
Alice the tv show was inspired by the movie Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore, which featured Kris Kristofferson and a young Jodie Foster in supporting roles,
You're right, this movie is underrated gold, especially when you consider how good the young Brad Renfro is and how young he was when he died. Breaks me. I caught this movie by accident one night on TNT or one of those comparable channels when I was, idk, 13 or something and I bawled my eyes out. I went out and searched every store till I found it on DVD and I watched it over and over. I just loved it and couldn't believe no one was talking about it. Everyone did such a good job. I think it's some of Susan and Tommy's best work, that barely anyone sees. Much like A Love Song For Bobby Long is John Travolta's and ScarJo's best work, but I'm probably the one person on the planet who saw that movie 😂 It's my all time favorite and I highly recommend it.
When I was a kid, like 5th grade, I read two novels over and over again. One was Jurassic Park, the other was The Client. Fantastic movie, but unlike JP, it stayed nearly 100% accurate to the novel, including huge chunks of dialogue taken straight from the book.
“Well you do need a lawyer Mark Sway” is one of my family’s obscure movie quotes that no one gets but us. That and “Flames on the side of my face, heaving, breathless” bonus points for those who know that one.
Glad you liked it, Ashleigh. It's one of those films (and novels) that I'm massively fond of but keep quiet about for unknown reason, I guess because lots of people aren't familiar with it? The Client has something for everyone, I remember watching it first at my grandparents' house when I was a little kid - thrills, suspense and violence (for my TV crime-loving grandparents), a cool kid character to root for (for me at the time), emotional layers and family drama for the rest. Great choice!
Some think that they have run the entire gauntlet, but it makes exactly zero sense to me. I can mention at least 5 weeks worth alone that absolutely nobody does that are also top tier but won't win any polls. I can't afford patreon with a 3 year old beautiful Daughter so they go unheard.
You should definitely check out A Time to Kill. The author of The Client (John Grisham) wrote that book as well - so many of his stories were made into movies and they’re all great.
What a Monday! Seeing you react to the Client and I also just saw EOM posted a Burbs reaction! Yay to putting off responsibilities to hang with y’all for a bit! 🎉
Loved this film as a kid, when I was probably too young to even understand just how incredible Brad Renfro (Mark) was as a child actor. Fame didn't seem to do him any favors, unfortunately. RIP to a very talented man (and my childhood celeb crush) gone far too young. 💜
This was always on TV when I was a kid, and I'm pretty sure my parents watched it a lot, but I always thought it was some boring lawyer movie. I watched it for the first time a couple of years ago and gahdamn it's fantastic! The stress & anxiety this movie makes you feel! Ugh! It's so good!
The “Grishamverse” is worth jumping into. The Firm, The Pelican Brief, A Time to Kill, etc. Southern Lawyer suspense genre. Also, been watching since early days, subscriber and usually have you on my feed. Your video came up tonight after saying goodbye to my 14-year old cat. Thanks for 45 minutes of positivity and nostalgia for a film from my youth.
The show with the blond lady with the bee hive is called Alice. It's about three waitresses working at Mel's diner in the late 1970s, early 80s. The blond lady with the beehive's name was 'Flo'.
i SO don't know why this movie isn't super popular or talked about or whatever, i LOVE IT! 😊 A few others "not talked about much on yt" are Return to Paradise (with Vince Vaughn in not a comedy for a change haha), Dead Man Walking (Susan Sarandon!), One Hour Photo (with Robin Williams, also not a comedy), The Life of David Gale, Sleepers, North Country, Blood Diamond. All worth a watch imo 😅

He used to tell people he was "Fredrick" as an alias and dude loved to party until he isolated most people away from him.
Great book. Great movie. This was Brad Renfro’s very first movie and he had no acting experience. Amazing talent. RIP
I forgot about Homer Simpson making an appearance taking pictures and being a pest. And by Homer Simpson, I mean Dan Castellaneta.
i was so into this movie when i was 12 (around the time it came out). i watched it so many times. i was obsessed with susan sarandon at that age. rip brad renfro, he was a good actor, in a bunch of stuff around this time.
34:22 BTW, the expression is “sleep with the fishes.”
Brad Renfro, another Knoxville Tennessee native. Great choice from the Hallowbeans winner!
I'm so glad you liked it. This is one of my favorites. I was only a couple years older than Mark Sway when this came out so there was plenty of appeal in this one for me. I read the book first and loved it and then saw the movie in the theater. Still my favorite of the John Grisham adaptations.
A very underrated movie. The Client is another classic from the 1990s and more proof that the 90s is one of the greatest decades in film history
The awesome judge who was putting everyone in their place was played by Ossie Davis. He played Chuck, the owner of the bait shop in “Grumpy Old Men”. ❤
Brad Renfro was such a great actor, it's a shame Hollywood took him down a dark path.
The next Corey Haim😢
The actor that plays Mark Slay/Brad Renfeo was born and raised in Knoxville Tennessee
ETA: now having had time to watch the whole video, if The Client brought Ashleigh to tears, The Cure would totally wreck her.
or Apt Pupil with Ian McKellan.
@ good pick for Hallobeans!
A few of them are: '
- The Firm (starring Tom Cruise),
- ;The Client' '
- 'A Time To Kill'
- The Pelican Brief (starring Julia Robers and Denzil Washington)
- The Chamber
- 'The Rainmaker (Matt Damon)
- 'Runaway Jury'
- Christmas With The Kranks
Also., his novels are very addictive...lol.
This was a John Grisham book. He wrote other books, and they made 8 of them movies. This was my favorite. Thanks, Ashleigh.
My favorite Grisham book too. 90's had so many bangers some of these get lost in the shuffle.
Thank you Hallobeans winner! This is one of the three movies I have wanted you to react to since forever!
THE ACCUSED with Jodie Foster is another great movie
Mary-Louise Parker plays the lead in the awesome show Weeds, 8 seasons, 102 episodes.
Also was great in Red & Red 2 with Bruce Willis
My family had all the Grisham movies on VHS in the 90s. This movie, the Pelican Brief and The Firm were my favorites. Poor Brad Renfro though..😢
Yep, this is a great movie. It's also great to see more people checking out movies that not everyone has reacted to already.
One interesting fact is the actor, Anthony LaPaglia, who plays the son of the mob boss was a cop in Without a Trace.
And Ashleigh has seen Polly Holliday play the mean Mrs. Deagle in Gremlins, who was launched out of her house.
"Kiss my grits!" And I never knew what grits were lol
Alice the tv show was inspired by the movie Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore, which featured Kris Kristofferson and a young Jodie Foster in supporting roles,
This is such a great movie. You should check out the backstory on the guy who plays Mark. Check out The Pelican Brief and The Firm at some point.
Brad Renfro was so immensely talented. I love this movie whole cast is awesome
When I was a kid, like 5th grade, I read two novels over and over again. One was Jurassic Park, the other was The Client. Fantastic movie, but unlike JP, it stayed nearly 100% accurate to the novel, including huge chunks of dialogue taken straight from the book.
A Time to Kill-
Also written by Grisham. All star cast and a tremendous courtroom scene.
So glad you've finally enjoyed this gem. One of my favorite movies of the 90s, watched it anytime it was on TV!
90's Susan Sarandon (The Client, Thelma & Louise, etc.) is peak perfection! And I agree, this is an underseen gem. Great reaction!
Pelican Brief and a Time to kill are also really good movies
“Well you do need a lawyer Mark Sway” is one of my family’s obscure movie quotes that no one gets but us. That and “Flames on the side of my face, heaving, breathless” bonus points for those who know that one.
Seeing the late, great J.T. Walsh (McThune in The Client) makes me think Breakdown would be an instant hit with Ashleigh
I love this movie so much! And I had such a crush on Brad Renfro as a kid.
Please don’t quit reacting. Others have been retiring and it saddens me.
I love that you love this movie. I was 14. Great movie. Idk why it wasn't a big deal. Very underrated for sure.
You know there’s so many stars in a movie when Dan Castellaneta aka Homer Simpson as the photographer in Ricky’s hotel room is just a sidebar.
Will Patton was great in this too as the cop who tried to entrap the kid.
Brad Renfro was such a natural, from even this early age. Hollywood chewed him up and spit him out and it's so, so, sad.
❤❤❤
I love their southern accents. I'm from the south, and I can tell a real one from a fake one.
Loved this film as a kid, when I was probably too young to even understand just how incredible Brad Renfro (Mark) was as a child actor. Fame didn't seem to do him any favors, unfortunately. RIP to a very talented man (and my childhood celeb crush) gone far too young. 💜
"A time to Kill" is a FANTASTIC John Grisham movie.
This came out when I was 11 (growing up in TN), and Brad Renfro became a huge crush of mine. This is a wonderful film. I still watch it to this day.
I loved this movie the first time I watched it. It's extremely suspenseful. Miracles and blessings to you and yours ✌️ 💜 🙏
Michael Clayton: A hidden gem of a thriller that doesn't disappoint...and it has a "juicy" surprise!
😂
Yes yes yes! This popped up in my feed, and you will LOVE it!
Brad Renfo was in one of the only movies that makes me cry every time I see it- The Cure (1995)
Their is a good movie that most people don't know about. But even if it never gets voted on to react to it you may still want to see it. The movie is called Flipped it was made in 2010 I believe. It is written differently. I thought it was cool
