Welcome to Copic/alcohol based markers :) I'm glad this video was helpful for you! If you'd like to see more, I have a list of all my Copic tutorials here: t.co/4LK9pDGGpk?amp=1 :)
Hi Sam, the gooey-ness is cause from the caps being dirty, they have to be cleaned from time to time. Every time we put our caps back on our markers the ink splashes or drips into the lid. Then builds up and gets on the nibs and ruins them. I clean my marker lids with 90% isopropyl alcohol and qtips. I also clean the marker so the lids will close properly, then change nibs as needed. Also be careful not to touch the nibs with the alcohol. There's a few videos on TH-cam. The gooey nibs can leave what's called an oil slick on your coloring, this is how when I realized I waited too long to clean my marker caps and ruined the nib.
For the mixing brands: I have zero problems with mixing brands. :D What ever I can get cheap. But I experienced that "I love Art Markers" are bleeding out like water if a Copic touches them. And Winsor & Newton Brushmarker have shown some agressiv behaivor against Copics. If I color something and the Copic isn't 100% dry and the Winsor comes near it it starts pushing into the Copic color.
I love and have to mix other markers with my copics because I only have a few xD I use them with bic markers or even sharpies. Thank you for the videos they are very informative.
I think there's a big advantage with mixing anyway. ;) You can do a lot of neat effects with different products and brands :D Glad you enjoyed the video!
there are markers like ohuhu, alpha, touch five and touch cool which are cheaper and spectrum noir ,sinhaun touch markers, tombow, winsor and newton and letraset are still pricy though.....
Dood! The first thing happened with my day 4 of DDC last year. I left it next to my window and a little while later it had this weird red splotch. Welllll that's one more reason why I'm not buying any more Copic markers 8D. Nice vid~
Oh no! D: That sucks ;o; But yeah, so dumb how they're so expensive and they don't at all last. They raised it so quickly too. When I was in high school, retail was 4$ per marker! Thanks though x3
I've had two markers from the same set that had the same issue as your red marker. I have replaced them as well. Every time I replaced the nibs and filled them up they would just dry up again. I haven't had the heart to throw them away, so they just sit in the marker box at the bottom x.x
Aw, that sucks! I'm sorry. I've found it kind of neat to use as a dead marker though. Has an interesting texture to it, and its goopyness makes it leave large spots of ink for me to manipulate with alcohol. Might be worth trying stuff like that with them, that way at least you get some use out of them? I do feel you, it'd suck to through it away.
Am I the only one that pulls the chisel tip out and stick the refill reservoir in the end to fill them? A good squeeze...depending how dried out they are while watching the measurement gauge on the refill and the brush tip to see when it get wet and you have a filled marker. Also I've heard some of my customers use UV glass to block out the UV which causes the ink to fade.
You're definitely a rare breed, haha. Most people I know, including myself, are too lazy for that. Ah yeah, UV protective glass is great to help make it longer :)
I had NO clue about lightfastness. 😬😬😬 Extremely glad I didn’t invest in them, and then start selling the works from them. I might get them for illustrations which I turn into digital files, but they’re definitely not at the top of my list anymore. Thank you SO much for this follow up video Sam!
I know I'm a year late lol, even though copics arent lightfast, am I able to use them as underpaintings? I'm mainly a colored pencil artist, and I want to implement materials into my portraits that makes my process easier, since colored pencils are a slow medium. Would the markers still fade if I colored over them with colored pencils?
I've never tried it and don't know anyone who has in terms of testing with lightfastness. Best to try testing it first yourself. It'll be a time consuming experiment, but worth while in the long run if you are concerned about it. You could also look into watercolors for a base, since there are ones that are for sure lightfast. Sorry I couldn't be of more help! If you find an answer, feel free to let me know :)
Hi! I use coloured pencil over copic markers all the time, especially for skin. From my experience I have not noticed much fade, but I also cover the entire area and my art is kept in a dark place, not hung up. So if it has faded I've done a decent enough job to hide it. If you are curious I can dig through my art and find something from 5 years ago to compare.
Oh cheers for helping answer the question! :D I would think good coverage should help with the fading, but in general would still be good practice to use UV protective glass if hanging, and otherwise properly store. Thanks again x3
Now that I knew about this liGhtfAsT thingy with copics, I’m glad I stopped using them for finished pieces, only for little sketches and doodles. But like damn, these markers are so expensive yet they aren’t even lightfast. Makes me question if they’re even worth it.
I love these videos! So glad you made a sequel, and so glad you talked about lightfastness. Making sure your art is lightfast and archival is so important if you're selling it and there are definitely not enough people aware that Copics are not.
Aw thank you x3 The only place that Copic officially lists it, from what I found, was on an obscure FAQ page at the very bottom. There should for sure be at least an article or something, that's kind of important @_@ A lot of new artists get excited seeing Copics, as it's a well known brand, but they don't last. x/
Egads! I totally agree, this should be public knowledge. I didn't know until I was watching a watercolourist who uses Copics for colour studies explain that due to the lightfastness issue she doesn't create finished pieces with Copic markers. Anyone purchasing original art should be made aware too! They do sell UV glass for frames, but I don't know if that would even work with Copics.
Same, I didn't find out until I heard about it from someone else. It would be interesting to see if UV protective glass would make a difference for them, especially since a few of their colors can fade from just INDOOR light which is WILD.
I just read that lightfastness article you linked and -- holy crow! Within a matter of weeks too, which is crazy to imagine. I suddenly regret leaving my Copic swatch card on a clipboard on my wall since now I'm not sure if anything has faded from being exposed or not.
Have you tried adding denatured alcohol when the Copic pen is dryish? My pens are upstairs--no air conditioning in southern California----some people say you can add it. Some say it might ruin the pen that's supposed to last a lifetime....what do you say? Also, what does your necklace say? It looks like Hebrew, but the images on my computer are fuzzy. Thanks, in advance, for an answer about the denatured alcohol. :) If you have an answer, that is :)
I'd be careful with it. You don't want to dilute the color. It might be better to use the refill if you have it, but otherwise, if it's dry, I'd test a drop or two at a time and give it a minute to soak before adding more. I haven't needed to do that myself yet. But I don't use my markers too often. Fellow Socal'er here as of 2016 ;) And my necklace says my name in Hebrew: Samantha :)
Do you do it for yourself? Don't you want to join university for artists (if you've not done it yet)? Personally I am a student of MArchI (Moscow Architectural Institute), 1st year, and I can say that real professional drawers share their knowledge. Its really great because they tell you things you probably never know without them and if you love being artist (i suppose) i recommend you discover this field of our world (not to tell you that you paint bad, its not truth, but to recommend you as a friend and colleague )
I'm not sure if you mean as a teacher or student, but: I have considered teaching, but the requirements for it are not something I'm currently capable of doing. So for now, I just teach via online, like through my TH-cam platform and others :) I've also looked into being an art student, and that one is not for me. I learn well enough from online. School is just not an option for me right now.
which paper suitable with copic and easy to line art , I use canson italia 3,5k vnd/per 1 paper but it's hard to line art, so can you tell me some kinds of paper can use with copic and easy to line art? ( I from Vietnam so I can make mistakes in gammar or vocab so I'm sorry if t make mistakes) I'm looking forward for your answer, thanks
I'm probably the worst person to ask, unfortunately. I use computer paper for most of my Copic pieces. I have used Strathmore sketch paper as well, and it works for what I need. Amanda Elise Art here on TH-cam would be a much better source about paper. I'd ask her and see what she thinks :) Here's her channel: th-cam.com/users/amandaeliseart
Love these videos, Sam, you are Awesome! love to heard Artists mystakes with copic Markers, that's make me feel so much better as i'm not the only one who makes Gooffy things lol!¬ thank You so much and see you next time with the 15 Artists mystakes does YEAH!
Thanks so much! Ah, I'm glad you like them x3 Haha, you're definitely not the only one ;) Not sure if I'll make another, but if people want it enough, we'll see :P
LOL! you know Sam, it could be with anythigs, colored pencils, watercolors, Gel pens well the only things whe loves it's the the mystakes, i think it's because it's very Helpfull to know the Pro made the same mystakes as every other Artists like me do! Can't wait to see the other 5 mystakes video LOL!
oh man, that marker build up! I bought my copics in the large set, but one of my markers - YG05 - kept getting that weird gunky... sticky build up. I replaced nibs, and refilled and refilled and... nothing that I did seemed to fix it. I ended up going and just buying a new marker because I didn't know how else to fix it! If anyone knows what it is that causes the ink to get all gunky and weird like that, please say so, because it's so frustrating! Thankfully, out of all my copics, it was only that one marker that got all wonky.
Right? It's so weird! I almost wish they'd address this themselves somewhere, even if the result of it comes down to always having to buy a new marker. At least one marker in every Copic artist's collection I know has this issue x'D
I was a crazy person and bought the 5 sets of 72 Copics while I was in university, and thankfully it's only been that one YG05 that had the buildup problem. When I searched online for solutions, I didn't find anything with a cursory search other than replacing the nibs and refilling. It's good to know that I'm not the only person that this has happened to, and though it's not the best solution - that we reached the same conclusion. It would be really, really good to have Copic address this in some form or fashion. Like, is it that the ink dries up and it's the pigment that gets all gunky and sticky? That seems like the most logical issue to me, but who knows?
Eternity's Emporium I'm pretty sure they did address this problem, they just told you that you either overfilled it or the pressure in the marker changed from shipping. (Air plane) Just scribble on scrape paper to fix both problem.
Wow I did not know that copics were not lightfast. I’m curious how art has held up for people I’ve given art to because no ones ever said anything to me about it fading. My art I do for myself never sees light so I’ve not noticed this myself. That’s so crazy haha especially considering the amount of people who sell copic pieces.
Tests for lightfastedness are typically done with direct sunlight, most people keep their artworks indoors. So that could protect them somewhat, though there are a few colors that fade from indoor light. And over time, it might happen slow enough that people don't notice. I wish Copic would advertise this more openly, especially since they've since changed to marketing themselves as a serious art tool. It's almost manipulative :/
sambeawesome yeah it’s super crazy to me that I didn’t know this until I watched this video lol I probably would have never known had I not stumbled on this.
I didn't find out until recently either. The only place I could find where Copic officially lists it is on their FAQ page only linked at the very bottom of their website. And even then, you have to scroll down a bit on the FAQ page just to find it. On top of that, you'd have to know what 'lightfast' means. The question is "Are Copic Markers lightfast?" but most beginners and artists might not know what that even means and could skip that question @_@ Idk, I feel like it should be plastered everywhere.
For everyone (still) upset over my mispronunciation of 'Copic', you are right, I'll pronounce it like コッピク from now on.
Hi. I've used a copic re fill on a spectrum marker and it works fine :-)
Awesome! Thanks so much for letting me know :D
Hi im new to Copic and it’s beautifulness and thank you so much 😊 for these I know I’m very late but yeah.it made my art look a lot better

i like using copic refills of water brush pens. it turns them into a brush tip~
Haha, nice! xD
yeah!! I liked your review I was about to buy copics and this is useful
Thank you ^^ Happy it helped :D Hope you enjoy your markers!

Do have any suggestions for a white marker or white paint for a black fabric hat
I'd look into fabric markers. If you live in the US, I'd check out a Joanns store or another fabric/craft store and ask around.

What is lightfastness?

Yeah, it's ridiculous -_-
Its all subject to what purpose are you using the markers for. Not all artwork meant to be lightfast.
U could use UV protective glass to frame them or a UV spray to prevent fading
I could watch this beautiful artist every day!!!! I had to rewatch the video cause she had me stymied

From what I hear, Studio 71 and Artist’s Loft are the same markers.
I haven't heard of Studio 71, but that would be interesting if manufacturers were selling markers to different brands, haha.
It's Kofi pronounced like, and equivalent to (the price of a cup of) coffee

The word is COPIC! The "O" is pronounced it is NOT an "A"!
Oh wow thanks for letting me know, I had no idea, no one has ever told me this before :)
I die a little inside every time she says copic with a short o. I looked on copics website and it said pronounce it with the long o
I did it just for you ;)
