I think this is one of the best live action adaptations I have seen in a while. I haven’t finished it but have seen more than half of it. I think that the Netflix adaptation did well recreating the atmosphere of ATLA, but it’s still inferior because it feels like a condensed version of the story with some twists. But the actors, the atmosphere, the music, the slight jokes, the portrayal of the characters were actually quite good. They did everything right, except over condensing the story, but I guess it’s understandable given that it would be very expensive to do an acurrate recreation of the original story. The amount or cgi work would be unreal.
I get the point, but i also kinda disagree with it. I think its very fair and natural to compare a derivative piece of art to the piece of art it derives from. I dont mean in a scene for scene kind of way, but rather in its themes, characters (arcs), tone and style. And netflix ATLA just fails most if it. Sometimes they get it right, i liked Zuko for the most part and his relationship with Iroh is depicted very well. But most of the times and especially with main characters they fail spectacularly to even scratch the surface of what made the characters of the original and in a show that is mostly driven by its character arcs, that is a big issue for me. Same as with the tonality, the original is so good, because it effortlessly blends goofy comedy with heavy themes and subjects, the LA is just dark for the sake of being dark. If you are going to do a Live action, it needs to keep the spirit of the original, regardless of how you change it. One Piece, as a very recent example, managed to do that very well. Even if they had to break down close to 100 episodes into 8 episodes and made changes and even added a new overarching b plot, everything was still identifiable as what it was meant to be in the original (with a few exceptions ofc, no show is perfect) and most of the originals important moments and character developments were integrated pretty faithfully. Netflixs ATLA on the other hand felt to me like they strung together just every thing they knew the fans liked from the original but had to remove it from its original context because of the format, taking away a lot of the character development the episodes they took from had. Or even just "easter eggs" for the sake of being there, Wan Shi Tong comes to mind or the hippies from secret tunnel, who literally have no reason to be there except because the "acoustics", they are just there because they are recognizable. And i didnt even get into the philosophical and political themes that the original had and that the showrunners just straight up didnt understand or chose to ignore. All that is "just" comparing it to the original, judging it on its own the script is horrendeous, they overexpose everything, there are multiple plotholes, mainly in the last two episodes, bcause they had to write around stuff they changed earlier in the season. Even if you dont compare it to the original, the characters are mostly written very stilted and most of the payoffs feel unearned (Pakku and Katara). Overall it feels like the show is designed to give as much cheap hits of nostalgia as it can and if thats enough for you, then that is fine, i cant say i disliked it either, even with all of my criticisms, but i cant say i liked it very much either. What saddens me, is that the original is so much more, says so much more and just deserves better than "being milked" for nostalgias sake. What i can say is that it revitalized the ATLA community and elements of the original, that werent in the spotlight are being explored more now, because they were lacking in the LA and thats good i guess.
I have some problems with your take. There is no way to not compare it to the original when 1) it is derivative content, they own the IP and chose to remake the original intead of jsut making a new story on the universe, and 2) it has almost the same exact runtime as the original season 1 of the show, yet has less than half the contect crammed into the 3 most expensive sets they could build. I hadnt watched the original show in a really long time and barely remembered it, yet almost quit after watching the first episode. Ended up watching and seeing its a really bad show on its own, not even comparing to the original. I then went and watched the entire cartoon, to see if I was going crazy, and nope the cartoon is actually awesome. So then I had to start comparing, and damn, I realized not only the characters but the show itself was completely stripped bare from theirs souls and personality. The world feels small af, theres no world building, all the characters are wooden copies of the originals. I swear if someone told me this shows script and dialogue was written by chatGPT i would not doubt them, I really think taking this as it is just being conditioned to take garbage as quality. If anything, One Piece showed that they are perfectly capaable to do quality shows and we should not take this inferior stuff. But then again, that show had the original creator involved from beginning to end and even ordered reshoots when he saw stuff that sucked, while in this one the creators left when they realized they couldnt bend the creative direction of the show, and it goddamn shows. They are so desperate to be edgy and make cool aesthetically pleasing shots that it seems that is all they really wanted out of it.
I really don't like that take. When the adaptation tries its own thing with the original material, you should've just made a different better story if you're just going to change stuff around. I really don't appreciate that. Yeah sure you can it's inevitable you need to change stuff a bit, but the overall essence of the original should be there. I think this is an ok good series in itself not comparing to the original, as you said it's not bad, but if compared to the original it's really different and doesn't have the same charm that made the original great. Aang feels a bit too serious. I have this feeling that the show assumes we know or we already watched the original, so some stuff feels rushed, didn't elaborate much. Maybe i'm just too fed up with the other live action series/movies messing up so I'm hyper critical of them. but oh well. :D

Thx for your take! I respect the live action for some of its competent aspects, but still it infuriates me, because it doesn't respect the original's lore or characters enough. I haven't watched the original in a few years so I can't be super nitpicky about differences. Overall though, I really enjoyed the Netflix version. It had the right feel to most of the characters, it looked pretty darn good and it was fun. I'm looking forward to seasons 2 & 3. Yeah 100%! When the Korra series was very disliked by a lot of fans. So if even the creators of the show can't please everyone (even George Lucas when the prequels of Star Wars game out a lot of people disliked it) think it's important to understand that you never catch lightning in a bottle twice
people would still have issues if they did a 1:1 reenactment of the original because then theyd just complain how the directors have no originality. Netflix has no way to "win" the ATLA fanbase entirely, and to those that hate this I say: "What would Uncle Iroh say? probably something along the lines of 'it's like more tea, why complain when you can sit back and enjoy it.'". I'm 100% with you on your main point at the end of your vid, better to enjoy the fact we got more Avatar that was significantly better than what we got previously.

Really enjoy 90% of the casting, it's fun to watch!!
Are you serious? The show was mediocre at BEST. It is another wasted potential for this "element bending" universe. The only thing it needs is to take it SERIOUSLY. Dont make it family PG13 nonsense. Hire quality screenwriters and directors (u dont really need high end actors because great director can make average actors play like gods). It was so F cringe at times, embarassing attempts in comedy ended up like hihi cringe no thank you. Bending fights are really REALLY bad quality - both CGI but most importantly Choreography in general is low quality and can be sooooo much better. In all seriousness.. I liked choreography from the movie much more and OH my god dont even start with FIRE BENDERS making their own fire from thin AIR but water benders need actual water ponds and "s8it".. can I trigger you even more? Aang is a f crybaby EVERY episode.. every episode he is like "uhh world depends on me" .everybody else "u got it" and REPEAT.... EVERY EPISODE same thing all over again.. give me a break.. 6/10 with both eyes closed and I am REALLY REALLY generous. It screams to you "I have been made with as least effort as possible" and "I´ve been paid so I made it". Thats it
Your original video on the Netflix Avatar helped shape my perspective on this show. It's hard to keep the two shows separate and not compare the two but when done, the Netflix adaptation was rather enjoyable. There's still a lot to critique but those critiques are so much more positive than the Cartoon vs Liveaction arguments. Mostly I think about how Stranger Things was such a great and believable show with a cast of children while this one tends to fall flat. Most issues I think stem from them sticking too close to the source material as well as the high fantasy setting.
Correct me if I'm wrong but you commented on that video didn't you! The one from a few years ago. Or maybe I'm crazy. Thanks a lot for sharing your perspective and yes for sure. Comparing child actors to a cartoon that can be drawn perfectly is a bit harsh. Katara worries me a lot tbh (Azula a Little too). But the rest range from ok to great mostly.
Oh yeah! That was me, it was when I found your channel and saw how well the video was made. Glad to see your subscriber count 10x in that time. Hope more is to come. Oh, and I'm comparing the acting between stranger things and the live action avatar. I think stranger things is easier for the kids to act in because it was a new property and they didn't have the constraints of mimicking a cartoon. The acting in avatar does seem a bit worse but a good portion of that is because they are reenacting a lot of the cartoon as well as the high fantasy aspect of avatar. There are also a lot of other things working against these actors so I think they did a good job despite those hurdles.
More is sure to come! Yeah but like in Harry potter, these young actors will get better with age. So their performances should improve for the upcoming seasons!
The show is not bad, yes. But it is absolutely not worth watching under any circumstance. It's just the lowest amount of effort you can put into a projct like this. It's nothing. It delivers no feelings, no emotions, no atmosphere, nothing. It's bland. Why would anyone watch this over the cartoon is the question that I'm asking.
That is honestly what's gotten me so irritated with this whole thing. I remember someone say, "this adaptation needs to prove it has a reason to even exist." The fact that it's worse than the original and it stripped it of its mean.. what's the point of its existence other than to give people a worse impression about ATLA as a whole? Why would anyone who actually loves the original want that?
New fans maybe. Kids who don't wanna watch old cartoons may like this one. If your a kid who grew up watching the star wars sequels I'd feel bad for you. But if you grow up watching this version of Avatar I'd be like you know what? It's not that bad.
The casting is perfect, however the writing fails to provide good dialogue for the actors to follow. Almost every scene is about telling, the characters telling you how they feel, telling you flashbacks, telling you the history. They don't live any of that, it's all jyst telling, all complete monologues delivered in turns by each character on scene. Feels so artificial and unreal, which is sad because the casting is good, the actors are good, and the cgi is good most of the time. Poor writing, poor characters, poor story.
I'm a little worried about Katara though. I don't think the girl has the acting range to portray her. The rest I thought were fine! Would have liked a bigger more imposing actor for Zhao tho
If you really think that the animated version is literally perfect and flawless, then you are biased, just like most people who criticize on TH-cam and other platforms. The original is very good. However, it still has its own flaws. It is quite interesting how so many people who criticize the live action series is a hardcore original fan and treat it as if it's perfect and has no flaws when it clearly has, they are just not seeing it because, they don't want to find them. Don't you realize in every fandom of any series of kind, there are always people who are biased cuz they perceive the original as perfect when it's not. They just don't want it to be anything other than perfect. The problem here is that people(especially fans) are so quick and easy for them to point out the flaws in the live action adaptation whereas they are practically blind to any flaws to original due to their bias perspective. Even though the term 'flaws' is a subjective term, I promise you that when I go back and re watch the original from book 1 to 3 I will find at least 10 to 20 flaws(probably a lot more) without being biased against it in the name of finding flaws. I am very good at objectively enjoying the show while spotting flaws.
the original show has its flaws but it is a nearly perfect show. It's no wonder it was a lot of people's favorite cartoon growing up and one of the highest rated shows of all time, as it blended concepts of in depth character and story writing of anime and the goofiness and charm of western cartoons really well. It's not because you are really good at cinemasinsing a show that that fact will change. And even if you were right about all of that that you are wrong about, it wouldn't be a good whataboutism to justify the absolutely terrible writing and directive choices this new show has taken. Even if that show was as bad as you describe it wouldn't elevate this one.
That bias is rooted from the fact that the quality of the animated show is high-tier that you gravitate to the idea that it is a masterpiece. Like you said it might have some flaws, but at the same time they are so miniscule that it doesn't tarnish the show overall. Does being bias towards the show mean that it's wrong to call it a masterpiece of a show?
@@internetgoat4831 It's been awhile since I have seen book 1 thru 3 and the only way to really truly determine whether the animated version has 'minuscule' flaws as you say, or regular size flaws is for me to watch the whole thing from a non-biased neutral perspective, but it is a long show from book 1 to 3 and I am not willing to do that right now. So it's pointless to have this conversation any further about this matter until I re-watch the whole and give you my honest opinion. But what we can talk about is your question: Is it wrong? Well it depends on how you define as 'wrong'. If you mean non-authentic? Yes. the meaning of being biased toward something basically means you are not seeing something clearly for what it is, rather we see what we want to see that serves us in some way. But if you mean 'wrong' as in like there is something wrong? Then no. Anyone can call anything masterpiece with any perspective. It's their life and their choice.
Think that if you look at cartoons aimed at kids, the original is one of the best shows ever made for kids. It had a way deeper storyline than Kim Possible, or Ben 10, or anything airing at that time. You can't expect Schindler's list from a children's cartoon. The only animated show I've seen that has an unbelievable story at that level is Arcane. And that's aimed at teens, and LOL players who are a more mature audience than kids
Great video🫶 I agree with you, it doesn't compare to the original, but I think it's a good adaptation and like you said it will probably attract new Avatar fans. They are 2 different shows and comparison is never a good idea. Based on the original I think it's pretty good, it will never be the original but it's nice to relive the show from a new perspective💪
You are right it's not bad, But at the same time you're wrong with that thumbnail coz it's not good either. It's okay. Nothing wrong with it but compared to the animated show it's poor.
I love how desperately people are trying to defend this steaming pile of garbage that only lets admit it have "elements" of the original show. A crappy fanfiction sums it up better.
I found the live action very hard to watch. The dialogue was stiff and superficial, the pacing kept switching between too fast and too slow, and the narrative decisions decharged what could have been strong emotional moments. Those three became very apparant when I watched the show. I watched it with someone who doesn't engage in media critique, and they noticed the exact same issues. The show served as educational material on what not to do. I would also say that the bending generally felt detached from the bender. When someone used their firebending or airbending, it would oftentimes appear as if they were creating the elements with their minds rather than with their bodies. That made the bending feel effortless and difficult to relate to the person doing the bending. It made fighting less convincing. In general, I would also say that the shot compositions (angle, lighting) weren't executed as well as they could have been either, but Im an amateur at best in that field
It’s okey to be positive, I was until I watched the whole thing, sorry. This show treats you like a dumb kid, It over explain everything 4 times because they are afraid your too dumb to make yourself questions or let the audience watch a real character development. To me, it has his heart in the right place but it’s BAD. Excellent CGI doesn’t justify lazy and stupid dialogues. 5/10 👎🏻
They removed the messages, the duality, and the foreshadowing of the original show. They didn't try to do one to one adaptation, they try to remake Avatar the last Airbender synopsis and not the whole story
I think the show does a whole lot of good - but I also think it's a step down from the original. Isolated from the original, it's an entertaining enough show, with some interesting ideas, but some pretty bad writing and bad acting. The costume designs are awesome, and when they utilize real locations, the cinematography isn't terrible to look at. But comparing it to the OG show, this one drops the ball in so many different ways. Characters have lost their personalities, with villains like Iroh, Zuko, Azula, and Ozai having their edge blunted, and with heros like Aang, Katara and Sokka being fountains of poorly written melodramatic monologues. Such little time is spent actually developing the characters, and it only serves to hurt the overall narrative. Still, I enjoyed it well enough. Not a great show, but one I'll follow through with. I'd probably have liked it better if I hadn't seen the OG show first.
I think this is one of the best live action adaptations I have seen in a while. I haven’t finished it but have seen more than half of it.

Thats it
I loved the live action! Not as much as the original but I thought it was fun
Totally agree!
Dude get a life 😂😂😂
Why would anyone watch this over the animated series indeed. Watch both.
@@Burgerking69925 so because you thought it's cringe, then that automatically means that everyone will?
Definitely not at the level of the original for sure
they should release the 4th season that never came to be
Leave that mo Mike and Bryan! With the Avatar Studios
I totally agree! Glad you enjoyed it so much!
You are right it's not bad,
But at the same time you're wrong with that thumbnail coz it's not good either.
It's okay.
Nothing wrong with it but compared to the animated show it's poor.
it had good elements and bad alements to call it anything worse then okay ist just stupid.
I love how desperately people are trying to defend this steaming pile of garbage that only lets admit it have "elements" of the original show. A crappy fanfiction sums it up better.
Bro I did not watch the original and I couldn’t stand this piss show.
🤣🤣🤣
That's a solid take. I appreciated that their heart was in the right place for sure
Mexican with a British accent?
Ya se wey está raro
They removed the messages, the duality, and the foreshadowing of the original show.
They didn't try to do one to one adaptation, they try to remake Avatar the last Airbender synopsis and not the whole story
take away the franchise this show would be a 2/10 max.
And the movie -5 haha
is it perfect? no. is it way better than a lot of shows? sometimes. is it worth more seasons to let us see the world more? ABSOFUCKINLUTELY
100%. When I make a deep analysis I'll touch upon that stuff but your right
