    Those mechanical engineer-designers, successors to Charles Babbage, of the era of mechanical calculators disappeared under the mountain of silicon electronics technology. But they created a legacy of mechanical beauty within those understated metal boxes.

    Great video! I really hope I would had look and understand this video BEFORE dismantling and succesful repair of Facit and triumphator. Looking forward to acquire this particular model. Facit had jammed oil in crank, and and I would not have done anything unscrewing. WD40 / CRC would have done the job. Triumphator was bad quality job, and I believe it was built wrong in the factory first place, but now that is also working.

    What kind of brilliant mind can come up with such mechanisms?

      It was a gradual process of evolution--from the Pascaline to Liebniz's stepped reckoner and the Arithmometer to Odhner's pinwheel machines, and then this was a further elaboration of that to add a keyboard.

    Hi, I am from Thailand and have just got a nice Facit C1-13 a couple of days ago from a vintage online market. The unit was sent by a parcel delivery service to me about 80 km from Bangkok. After opening the good packaging box. Some small broken black plastic pieces were found. They looked like some pieces from a bushing part somewhere. After trying to operate it all seemed to work well except the register reset lever. It was stuck after one move and the crank could be rotated any more.
    I would appreciate your advice very much.
    Many thanks in advance.

    Nice video. Could you explain and show how mechanically the values is transfered from the keyboard to the drum. I an odhner model one is easy to understand but in a Facit is very dificult. The buttons are fixed but the drum of numbers move ever time that input a value.How does it work?

      It is incredibly clever. There is a good explanation over here: www.johnwolff.id.au/calculators/Tech/FacitC1-13/C113.htm#Rotor

    Hi, thanks for your videoes.
    Can you explain how did you fix the blocking crank trouble?
    I've got the same issue with my C1-13.

    • @CuriousMarc
      @CuriousMarc  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +Vincent it wasn't that easy nor did I catch it on camera. Look on the side for a larg-ish disk with a slot. A lever catches in the slot and locks it. To release the lever, a spring loaded pin needs to be pushed in. The lever was stuck and would not drop on it's own. The push pin was similarly hard to push. That's what I do when I free it temporarily: push on the pin and force the lever down simultaneously at 2:10. I had several similar faults throughout the machine. Freeing them with a combo of controlled force and WD40, then cleaning and re-oiling did the trick.

    Hi Marc I have a TK not quite as clean as yours. Could you tell me how the two most significant digits of the turns counter work. When u look at the cogs behind these digits there is a missing tooth. Non of the other digits have this , is this some sort of overflow mechanism ?

      It’s a long while ago, don’t remember exactly. The best illustrated description of the mechanism I found on John Wolf’s excellent site here: www.johnwolff.id.au/calculators/Tech/FacitC1-13/C113.htm

    Imagine that the CEO of FACIT believed that digital calculators would not threaten its market 🤣

    • @mellertid
      @mellertid 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      They saw it coming, but not in time. They did great until 1970, practically died in 1972. Curiously, Facit actually made main-frame computers, so they were not all stubbornly hanging on to mechanical solutions.

    Great video! I've found the exact same calculator in my basement... except it's not marked Facit...strange. It works fine and I've just cleaned it and oiled it with WD40. However the paint on some numbers of the bottom roller has come off and there are some marks due to the spin. In other words...some parts of the white numbers are black and some parts of the black rollers are white (or better, silvery). I was wondering if you could suggest me a way to restore the paint and what paint to use. Thanks a lot!

    • @CuriousMarc
      @CuriousMarc  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I have not yet had to redo painted numbers, so I don’t really know. Beware of WD-40 though, it’s the contrary of an oil, it’s a solvent. It is a last resort thing to get parts unstuck, but very shortly it will evaporate and form a goo that binds everything. You should get rid of all of it (I use isopropyl to rinse it out), and oil properly with a very light oil. Nye 140B oil is by very far my favorite, but it is very expensive.

    • @_biglu_
      @_biglu_ 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@CuriousMarc Thanks for the tips. Actually I used a lubricant called Svitol (very popular in Italy). I wrote Wd40 because I thought it's the same as WD40 but I may be wrong....don't know how to check.

    • @_biglu_
      @_biglu_ 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@CuriousMarc I think I'll follow your advice and remove the Svitol. I was wondering if typewriter oil is ok...I've seen it in my hardware store

      Ah OK then you might be all fine.

    • @CuriousMarc

      Common sense would say it is OK - similar mechanisms. Sewing machine oil, or clock oil works also.

    I have my Facit C1-13 dripping with WD40. Tomorrow I'm going to clean the WD40 and oil it. I read that some parts shouldn't be oiled? Which ones? And I was thinking in greasing with silicone grease. Is this a good idea? Everything is working, except the cranck handle. It's completely blocked with corrosion. 3 days in WD40, light hammer and nothing. Any advice?
