  • Chapter two of 'River Road' has begun! This is a comprehensive scenery series on how I compose, develop and build a signature scene, or "transition" scene, in the format of a "Vignette" or "Diorama" for a model railroad. In this case HO (1/87) Scale. I will cover some design and build process, including the making of an Old Growth Tree, etc.

    Boomer~ As I’ve written you before-as have so many others-I appreciate all the tips and techniques you bring to the table as you build your new model railroad. But more than that, you’ve opened my eyes to stepping outside my comfort zone to help this old dog learn some new tricks, especially as they apply to painting and building trees (my favorite). As an aside, I visited my local wine and spirits shop the other day, looking for some new reds to try, and, lo and behold, I stumbled upon a 2019 Pinot noir reserve from the Russian River Valley called River Road. So I bought a bottle. Here’s to you, my friend! Cheers! ~Brian

      Boomer~ Two questions. Do you use Matte Medium to glue your foam pieces together or another adhesive? Also, what is your opinion of Sculptamold vs Celluclay? Thanks.

    • @boomerdiorama
      @boomerdiorama  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@briankistenmacher I usually use PL-300 to glue larger chunks of foam. On the other hand, when I need to add smaller pieces of foam-to-foam I use full strength "Matte Medium." I use both Sculptamold and Celluclay. I find Celluclay to be very similar to Sculptamold. Celluclay seems to have a finer texture, whereas Sculptamold has a little more coarse texture. Make sure you wear a mask when you first mix it, as the dust should be avoided until it's all wet. Cheers.

    That is the calmest cat I've ever seen! - - - -- We all develop our own techniques and preferences. I mostly model N scale and have never been able to achieve satisfactory results for myself carving foam. I also feel using massive amounts of foam for large projects gets to be costly. I use pretty old school chicken wire as an armature to support plaster gauze bandages. I do use scrap foam as pylons and struts to support the wire net. I then use my own rock molds to cast in place rocky outcrops or cliffs. But it's the results which count and not how we get there. Your results are awesome! Never seen any better. And I'm anxious to try out some of your methods. Looking forward to your continued build.

      I raised Dusty on the Glover Road build. When she was a kitten I exposed her to all manner of "power tool" sounds as well. She could be sleeping right by the compressor when it kicks on and she hardly finches a muscle. She really gets what is going on for sure.
      No need for "big" budget materials when you build a small shelf-layout, although, depending on the approach, any railroad can suck up funds indefinitely in many ways.😂
      Cheers.

      @@boomerdiorama Agreed, different materials for different situations. Guess I got into the wire net when building a few rocky ridges 4 feet high and 30 or more feet long. I do use foam, but not so much for scenery. Haven't used plywood in a long time. Will be trying out your painting techniques at next opportunity.

    • @boomerdiorama

      @@jerrysmith1929 Most layouts I built in the past required hundreds, if not, thousands of trees. Thin wire mesh (hard-shell) scenery would never work for planting high numbers of trees. Furthermore, with foam, I can plunge trees and shape composition all day long with no need to fasten one tree because they plunge into foam and hold fast. I also prefer it with the smaller layout as well, but each to his or her own at the end of the day. One only has to forfeit one locomotive and the foam budget is covered in most situations anyway. Cheers.

    As said before dear Boomer, the idea to make the ‘vignette’ detachable is a great one. Either for the filming, or the ease of construction, moving, storing or even doing some maintenance on the footprint. Plus the opportunity it provides to even make different versions of the same model, either for seasonal differences, or just for the necessity of periodic change-up. Definitely will use the detachable ‘vignette’ idea on my layout.

    Love the cat. I to like to work with the pink foam. I like to have the scenery in chunks so I can take it out into the shop to do the real messy carving while setting down and comfortable. I am toying with the idea of holding the sections together with small magnets imbedded in the foam and the wood in the base. I have also in the past used velcro to hold things in place.

    • @boomerdiorama
      @boomerdiorama  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There was a time where I was addicted to pink foam when I worked in film. It can be messy, but it takes paint well and is easily revised, not to mention if you want to plant trees. ;-)

    You have the vision in your mind, your hands, fingers, bring that vision to the real world before our eyes. As you take a step you explain not only how but WHY. Watching you bring the vision to life through your videos. I have the vision in my head. It just never makes to the real world. It gets lost some where between my mind and my hands. I have trouble drawing stick figures. Yet I can build houses, furniture and just about anything easy. I have a wood, auto, metal shop in the garage. Show me a picture and I can make it. Yet, drawing with a simple pencil, painting, seem to be out of reach for me. Sitting here watching your ideas come to life. I admire people who have the artistic ability to take a chunk of pink foam and make it a very real looking carved stone wall, boulder, cobble stone path. When I try it looks like I had a seizure with a sharp object in my hand.
    Looking forward to when you start adding color and textures to this section.
    I have started turning the back bedroom into a train/hobby room. I hope to put your tutorials to good use when I start putting scenery down. As I will be working in N scale, I will have to adjust the size. Looking forward to trying to make N scale tree's.

      You sound just like me. I only draw stick people as well. Only what is necessary. This is probably why I build from photos and "napkin" drawings. I grew tired of building from "blueprints" in film, museums, etc. Been there, done that. As an artist I don't analyze the work - I feel the work - and it comes out the way it does, over many years of practice and experience. Thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts. Ah yes... I've often thought of knocking holes in walls to have a house-long layout... The wife categorically says NO!🤣
    I take your point though, over here in the UK we don't have a lot of space so compression is pretty much a given and Something we need to work with... The lucky ones of us tend to retreat to our lofts (small attic) or attics - my layout is in the living room of our flat / apartment so I've had to do a lot of compression to get what I want in there....
    Eventually, as is often the case with our hobby it will get demolished and a replacement built on it's ashes!
    Thanks for sharing your process as always sir,

      I think the days of the large basement layouts are over. There are exceptions, but who has the time and resources, not to mention the passion, to finish a large layout? No one ever said one has to build a larger layout. Besides, some of the largest layouts with the greatest impact are the smaller (Diorama Style) ones - especially in the UK. ;-)

    I was looking at this area on google earth and I can't find the giant sleeping cat sitting along the railroad anywhere. Is that part of modelers license too? I guess it might blend into the trees from the overhead shot you see from google earth so I guess I need to zoom in and take a closer look. How far is the cat past the warehouse and barge are in real life so I'll know what area to look in on the map. Since this is a compressed scene I'm guessing it must be a good ways away since I couldn't find it. Seems like a giant cat monument would be easy to find with the downward view you get using google earth. I'm going to look some more. LOL!

    Question from an art material perspective; Generally you use Golden , in this you used Liquitex Matte medium, you also mentioned Modge Podge. Not all matte mediums are the same. Is there reason you would use one over the other or is it simply a matter of what you had on hand?

    • @boomerdiorama
      @boomerdiorama  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I use Liquitex "Matte Medium" whenever I have it on hand. I find it to be superior to any other product - in this case. Golden is great as well but for some reason more expensive. When it comes to Acrylic paint for larger scenery sections etc, Golden is the best in the world. ;-)
