With the recent news that Russell Malone has sadly recently passed away, it seem almost prophetic watching this great performance of him, Pat Martino and Chuck Loeb who similarly are no longer with us. Yet again, I felt ever so sad this week. It really sucks to know these gentlemen aren't with us displaying their endless skills. May they all Rest in Peace. Mark Whitfield nevertheless is still very much with us and playing incredibly well. May the gods continue to remain kind.

I think you are wrong ...everybody is soloing in chord changes with alterations and subtitutions and it was not invented by martino ,, a famous guitar player always is influenced by other famous guitar player like Wes Montgomery but there are famous guitar player are influenced by famous saxophones players like parker .Coltrane ,cannonball solos

    • @RickyCastillo

      Hello Carl,
Thanks for your opinion, I appreciate sane debates.
Of course Martino didn’t invent all those concepts and technics. But his phraseology and articulation back in the 1967 (CD> El Hombre) make a great difference, in contrast with the jazz guitar context of the sixties. Kenny Burrell launched an album in the 1963, also Joe Pass, and also Grant Green, but none of them surpass Wes Montgomery technic and creativity. (even though I am a big fan of Burrell) After 1963 there wasn’t any other great jazz guitar album until the celebrated Baiyina in 1968 from Pat Martino. From those first two albums (el hombre, and Baiyina) I can identify a big change in articulation in comparison to Wes Montgomery style (for naming it in any way) the bluesy feeling was almost gone, the lines were extended and a little more acid and profound.
Of course there are many guitar players that took reference in other musicians, but I still can’t find any album in the 67’ that has the kind of phraseology Pat offered: (Miles Davis: Sorcerer, Chick Corea: Now He Sings Now He Sobs, Jackie McLean: Demon's Dance, John Coltrane: Expression, Lester Bowie: Numbers 1 & 2) and the same thing happens before that. But again, there are many reasons to support your point or mine, but from my experience, he is the one who change everything after Wes M.
I’m currently studying with him, and I can assure you that his method is transcendent, it is beyond music theory, it’s pure greatness. You definitely should check it out, if you didn’t already. It’s the first guitar method made for the guitar and from the guitar.
Something curious, he told me that he studied with a teacher named Sandole when he was a kid and Coltrane studied with him at the same time.
      Greetings

Pat Martino masters all the parameters to catch the stars on stage . He plays with
authority and conviction . He has the best sound, tone and level , the greatest knowledge
and feeling to walk on Wes paths .His hardbop lines are clear ,fluent and melodic and
he delivers a great and beautiful chorus built with architectural perfection in a complete
relaxed smiling performance . His colleagues stand as very good guitar players .

Martino's soloing magic is at least in part an adaption of techniques that can also be traced to Jack McDuff and Don Patterson, two of his mentors. The tension building with not quite repetitious lines ending in an explosion out of it is very much an organ technique.

Listening to each of these master guitarists take on this great number, then listening to Wes playing it (in both the Creed Taylor/Don Sebresky commercialized production and in his trio format), you come to understand the difference between master craftsman (like these guys) and pure genius (like Wes was).
