Get a Liftmaster......much better than a Genie! Jim
PS.......I was a Genie customer for almost 50 years and had to replace opener every 10years or so! Now by accident (new homes with openers), one is from 93’ and the order from 96’ both still working. I now have a belt drive with MyQ......amazing! I will never go back to a genie......!

My grandparents have an old Genie screw drive from 1993, and it still works great! I love the old Genie screw drives, but I'm not really a fan of their newer units. I'm more of a Liftmaster guy myself.

Never used a Genie opener, but the first openers I've used were Craftsman ones. Used them for about 12.5 years. They were chain drives, but they used a half-chain/half-cable loop. I assume the cable portion was to reduce noise, though it didn't help much cause they were still fairly loud overall. They worked well without any major issues, only ever had to do a few burnout resets. Then, I started using Liftmaster belt drive openers when my grandmother got an extension added to her house, and those were the openers put into the newly added 2 car garage. The extension was added about 15 years ago and she still has those openers. After the 12.5 years with the Craftsman openers, I moved out of that house, and into one that had a chain drive opener (didn't pay attention to what brand it was, it's gone now), but it got replaced nearly 5 years later when it's brain box died.
The dead chain drive opener got replaced with a Sommer direct drive opener. The direct drive is what my family has now and it still works just as well as when we installed it. On top of it being easier to reprogram if an adjustment to the door has been made, it's also really quiet since in a direct drive opener, the chain is fixed and instead of the drive gear being on the control housing, it's on the carriage/trolley. What I mean by it's easier to reprogram if an adjustment to the door has been made is that there are no limit or force screws on the control housing. Instead it has limit stops that go on the carriage rail, so the up and down limits can be set more precisely during the initial set up. And in the place of force screws, the forces are calibrated automatically. If the opener ever needs a force recalibration, such as after replacing or adjusting the springs or lift cables, or altering the positions of the limit stops, all that needs to be done is hold the reset button on the control housing, wait for the lights on it to flash, cycle it opening and closing the door twice both directions (4 total cycles), and that's it; forces, and travel limits, have been learned and the opener can then be used as normal.
