In my opinion, Balrog [Mike Bison] was meant to be played without jumping. If you were a REAL master of this character, your need to jump was mitigated by Balrog's reach, and rapid-fire attack pattern. Why? Because Balrog is a boxer patterned after Mike Tyson. When Balrog was controlled by the computer, he would relentlessly smother you with a barrage of punches, never giving you a second to get your bearings, and before you knew it, the fight was done. And this is how Mike Tyson would eliminate his opponents irl. But to control Balrog, in the same way the computer played him, took expert timing. You would have to throw a succession of jabs or medium level punches to keep your opponent pinned in the corner and then finish off each combo with a power punch. If the opponent tried to jump, hit em' w the uppercut. And then, while you were hitting them w these combos, the whole time you would be charging that turn punch. And this was hard to do, because you had to train yourself to keep three fingers locked on three of the top or bottom buttons, all while continuing to fire off combos with the other three buttons. [Much easier said than done!] That turning punch when charged up, could WRECK your opponents life bar, and by working that punch into the rhythm of your attacks, you could really throw off your opponent's timing. This is why I have always considered Balrog to be an expert class character, because to use him correctly, you really had to profoundly understand the timing of the game.
