  • 2024 Yamaha MT-09 and MT-09 SP | KNOX first look review
One of the very best middleweight naked motorcycles available is back and hitting harder than ever, the Yamaha MT09 and MT09SP.
With a market leading engine platform in the CP3 triple, the MT09 now looks to finish the puzzle with a revised and more aggresive riding position, better dash and in the SP version, some incredibly important updates in the braking system. With the option on the SP model now to remove the rear ABS, it seems that Yamaha may be well on the way to fixing their brake system gremlins which is about the only thing that stops them from taking the middleweight naked crown.
We're super excited about riding this motorcycle in 2024! Please check here for the latest specification - www.yamaha-mot...
Hope you enjoyed this short video. Be sure to give us a like, comment and subscribe.
    Thanks,
    KNOX

Bit of an update as I feel like we didn't quite understand this at the time of shooting, but the SP model now has an extra mode for the ABS, which should diable rear ABS. If this works as it should, this feature should elevate the MT09SP to a whole other level in our opinion. 😆
Hopefully we'll see this start to be applied to other Yamaha models in future such as the MT10, R1 etc. Thanks, Aaron Knox

What strikes me as funny... In 2012 I bought a gsxr 1000 L2 because of Simon Crafar's motovudu video (EPIC go watch ) highlighting that electronic riders aids are not always a good thing... while others lauded their use on bikes. Nowadays we complain if we cannot turn off rider aids lol. I think rider aids are a step forward but quickshifters on road bikes? how is saving a second on your trip to tescos going to benefit you? 😄

@KnoxArmour Was the problem you found with the intrusiveness of the older MT-09 SP's ABS related to the rear brake? I was under the impression that it was the front brake's ABS that intervened too soon, not so much the rear...

I stuck with my gen 1 MT-07 since 2016 which I had custom painted. Now I think it's time to move on to the MT-09 SP as it is equipped with all the latest tech and brembo stylema brakes for the first time.
I like the new look of the next generation MT-09 from the moment Yamaha unveiled it. The front with the new lights looks cool and the overall lines flow well with the rest of the design.
Having sat on it and seeing it in person at Motorcycle Live, it does feel really good.
CP2 engine was great fun and sounds amazing, but it's time for a new beginning.

  • @thorstenmetalhead9666
    @thorstenmetalhead9666 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

Just SAD that ALL THE UNIQUE SELLING POINTS of the MT-09 got eliminated. In 2023, it was the last upright naked bike that people over 1.85 m (6.1feet) could still right comfortably on, that didn't look like an insect but like a Transformer and that still had a subframe/pillion footrests with luggage attachment points, as well as the option of fitting a windshield.
I like every of the other Transformer light masks in the MT series better than this new one. For the GEN 3 to 2023, Givi and Shad had hard case mounts for larger cases, than on a standard GS in their linup and you could attach a large windscreen to the light mask. The subframe load capacity has been removed from the MT-10 from 2021 to 2022 and now from 2023 to 2024 for the MT-09 as well. It's a pity that none of the reviews mention this.
If the display becomes so large that it protrudes forward over the light mask, you can no longer retrofit a windscreen. Who convinced the manufacturers that naked bikes have to be made for the racetrack? I've been riding an MT-09 for 30,000 kilometres in 2.5 years and love this engine.
With in the commuteabilty gone, the last real UJM is unfortunately dying in my eyes.

I have the current gen SP. The riding position was always a bit odd for me, the bars are to high. The front had grip, but the feeling was vague. Just installed some Gilles risers which bring them 24mm lower and a bit further forward (fully adjustable in all directions). It is a subtle but noteable difference. The new felt better, but the reach felt shorter for me. The bars are angled towards you more. The new dash is really nice, but the novelty would wear off after a while. And of course, those Stylemas. Lovely brakes, but the standard setup can be improved with a set of better pads, although still not amazing.

If I'm not wrong traction control (and maybe even abs?) should be performance wise same as R1 (which they are saying they based it on). That said, I can see it regularly on the track - brakes and abs itself is for the slower riders (most of us) rarely the issue. Much bigger issue is right timing to use them. With that, even with my old ABS FZ8 i can easily takeover many modern bikes on the brakes.
