im sorry....ive watched this tournament heaps of times...and i'd like to know just one thing.....who is that beautiful creature in the white dress left of screen????
E.J. and Jason Belmonte are just about neck and neck as to who's the best bowler right now, but when it comes down to the mental game Belmo's got him beat. If he calmed down a bit, he could be even better.
urethane on bear, urethane on wolf. the pros sure throw urethane often and I virtually never see pearl reactive. Even belmonte doesn't throw his hybrid Timeless much last few tournaments. why? I'm thinking of getting a urethane for the beat up dry lanes I bowl.
It's quite the opposite actually, Urethane is great for fresh while pearl reactive are great for beat up dry lanes but will get you into trouble on fresh and tougher conditions. This is because of the tighter conditions on the tougher conditions on the PBA tour. You need to get an early read to blend out the pattern and your ball can't create too much angle on the backend on the fresh, otherwise you'll get into a lot of trouble with splits, which is why pearl reactive and even the Timeless are rarely ever used unless it gets really burned and they need the extra length. On the other hand, Urethane is able to give the pros that early read they need, yet predictability at the back. They'll rarely ever get below 8/9 count on their first shot and they can rely on their shot making to strike, which is why it's become such a popular option. It keeps them out of trouble while still allowing them to score through shot-making. Also, Urethanes are normally sanded to 360-500 to get it to shape up enough. 1000-4000 surface on urethane would be good for beat up dry lanes like you mentioned though.
ArsenalBowler thanks for the response. often times these lanes are roached and I can't get my reactive to the right of headpin without rolling out. I'm going to try plastic like Jesper did but if I can't carry I wonder if the urethane would fill the gap between the weak resin hybrid and the plastic. my proshop said the urethane will likely over hook so I didn't grab it yet. Basically my games look like EJ and Lawsen did. Daughtery Approach with urethane was a better choice than those 2
It really depends on what your game is and what are the typical conditions that you bowl on (lane surface, oiling length & volume etc.) as well. In my experience on extremely roasted lanes, Urethane on a higher surface fairs pretty well if you really needed it. I would also recommend something like the Hustle POW, an entry level/low-end reactive that won't give you that much motion, so you might be able to control this on really roasted conditions. However, if the lanes are not as extreme but still burnt I would really recommend getting something like the Hy-Road, which would give you good length and controllability, but much better versatility than the low-end stuff and more angularity than the urethane resulting in more pin carry (but also more splits and trouble on extremely roasted condtions). So basically, do you want something that would be more versatile like the Urethane (with different surface changes u can make) and/or the Hy-Road or do you really need something for the extremely burnt conditions? P.S. Plastic as a last resort ain't too bad as well, control the pocket, carry on your good shots and pick up your spares.
This is all sound advice. If i use my current hybrid & try to come from the left I either hook too much or slide right & miss the head pin on the AWFUL conditions. If I try to use that same hydrid up the middle or straight it ends up hooking to much as well. I need a down & in ball & Im going to see how plastic is. If that underhooks or doesnt carry I could try Urethane but im sure if the conditions are so bad anyway... I wont score much higher with it. A guy on my team that hooks house balls cant keep his ball to right sometimes so me expecting Urethane to be a cure for that may be stupid!
It's all about control and playing the lanes front to back instead of side to side. Urethane is good on fresh short patterns and lighter oil patterns. With the Bear being flat, you need something that is going to allow you to play front to back on the fresh. In my opinion, EJ should have used the Venom Shock instead of the Forza SS and then the Tag Cannon. But both balls are new, so... Most pearl balls are better for the burn on sport shots - especially with polish. They are fine on most house shots. Urethane is not usually good on the burn, particularly when the heads go. It hooks early with not a lot of back end. As I said, better on fresh short and/or light oil patterns. Decent on a house shot if you have the revs for it and/or control.

Thomas has weak arm strength lol
Svensson's mistake was using a plastic ball, :-/ Hate to say it but he got lucky.
Dieter Manero that ice was hitting pretty damn hard. It was a hard pattern but I liked the look it had
Aside from when he hit light that is
