Starting with a class that gives you a choice in animal companion can be good if you want to play a main class that has limited choice for animal companion/mount. For example, if you want to play Arcane Rider but you don't want a horse mount, you start with Beast Rider to get a Wolf of Mastadon mount, and the Arcane Rider will let you keep that mount and level it. But keep in mind that most animal companions start as normal size and don't become large until level 7.

One way around it is to take 1 level of Monk for the bonus feat that you don't have to meet the prerequisites for, one option being Dodge.

Divine Hunter (hunter) for three levels can be a huge benefit if the player or companion has an animal companion. I did this with Seelah so I could get a boar instead of a horse. Three levels gave my boar multiple things: divine or evil subtype, more resistances, smite, and a variable bonus that you can choose to give the animal that will increase as long as you continue to have levels that increase animal companion.
Originally, I went with a constitution bonus until I got a belt of +6 con. Then I switched it over to str. Then I got an evil belt that gives +4 str and +8 con so I switched the bonus to give my boar evasion and improved evasion. There are a lot of potential bonuses to give your animal companion so you can change them as you need to.

This is huge, because this feat requires 16 BAB which cleric can never have even on level 20. So something impossible to pick even on level 20 becomes ours at level 7............... Dipping two levels in to Paladin gives you a lot of defensive utility, CHA mod to saves, disease immunity and aura of courage, you just can't play as a vile degenerate.

This "breaking of the game" is practically essential on higher difficulties / Last Azlanti mode. This game also cheeses the player all the time with unpredictable encounters of unreasonable difficulty.
