I’ve heard this conversation on race and specifically the “Spanish race” before on this podcast, so I feel the need to clarify. First off, Spanish people are from Spain. Most people in Latin America speak Spanish because of colonization, but the majority of us are not Spanish, instead we are mixed with Spanish. People from Spain are European and therefore White. Spanish speaking Caribbean countries such as PR, DR, and Cuba are a mix of white (Spanish/ Portuguese colonizers) Black (enslaved Africans brought to the islands by the colonizers) and Indigenous (the native people of the islands, such as Tainos). That’s why we’re all different colors. Hispanic is an ethnicity, race is physical expression, and the representation of a people through language, music, art, fashion, etiquette, etc is culture.

The individualism is a great trait of being American but it can not be the center. Thats where the American exceptionalism come forms, and this odd nationalistic solipsism.

The hand is not more important than the foot, the eyes are just as important as the mouth. All them have their own individual needs but they all work for the body. America is a body with no control over its parts.

I wish I would’ve said this real clearly 12-18 months ago but Charla is a Jedi. His platform is only going to grow and I love that you can’t fit him in any 1 box. He inadvertently brings people together where as TV goes hard on that tribal good guys/bad guys sht.
5-6 years ago I didn’t know who he was and a buddy referenced him and said he didn’t like him cause he “hated white people” so much. I never gathered that about him. He uses firm language and he’s definitely about black folks leveling up but it never seems like he’s hating anyone 🤷🏻♂️

At some point the people on TV started calling the inequities in the country "white privilege". Before that I started noticing white people I'd just met casually throwing around "check your privilege" (first time I heard it I had no idea what she was talking about) ". Shit started getting weirder and weirder as the question "do you believe in white privilege?" emerged as a required allocution. I was even asked that as a final question by a girl I had just asked out e.g. "Are you crazy?" ""no more than anyone else" "Do you have your own place?" "Yep." Do you believe in white privilege?" ".... uggh what do you mean?" "It's a simple question, what are you a racist?"
I even had a girl I was already involved with send me a 50 question thing to determine how much white privilege I have. "It's so liberating to find out that I actually have been a part of the problem just by existing so now I can be an ally. Educate yourself. I'm so excited to see you!!" Block. Delete.

Why is Charlamagne so slow when it comes to understanding ethnicity vs race in regards to the Latin American community?
Watch @38:26. This man really just said “You Dominican right? Isn’t that a race?”. I been watching this podcast for years and seen multiple people explain it to him but he stays confused.
And even that Dominican girl speaking is ignorant, do not listen to her. She couldn’t find Hispanic on the census because Hispanic is not a race! It’s a blanket term that refers to people who come from Spanish speaking countries including natives of Spain. Latino/Latina refers to people of Latin America (i.e. Mexico, Colombia, Cuba etc.).
Half of the Dominicans I met growing up in Uptown NYC just as black if not blacker than me. That girl saying she was looking for “Dominican” under the census sounds as dumb as a Canadian immigrant looking for “Canada” as a race on the census.
Truthfully, most people are slow when it comes to race vs ethnicity. Part of the reason is that definitions are dependent on your environment (for example American's think of race as based solely on physical traits). In Nazi Germany, Jews were seen as an inferior "race". However, Hitler incorrectly designated them as such (Jews are more aligned with being called a family) and now we have to have a confusing conversation on whether the holocaust was based on race.
The Jews as a race discussion is similar to someone calling a tomato a vegetable in 1938 and then years later someone saying tomato sauce doesn't contain vegetables and the world bashing the person because the world has gotten use to calling tomatoes vegetables when it is really a fruit.
The Canada analogy is good.
