Oh yes she was something else. She was the baby of 9. So I was raised with the gift of being around the older folks. They knew a time that was much harder then what some know today. Growing up my mamaw and papaw would have a bunch of people over to eat supper and pick awhile. When I learned to play a little I'd sit in with them on the guitar or a little bit of banjo. Papaw even organized an annual singing he had on the porch of an old house he'd fixed up below theirs. He recorded a good bit on cassette tapes over the years that I'd love to find and listen to again. Papaw has been gone since 2012 and mamaw is going downhill fast these days. Soon them old memories will be all I've got. This video just reminds me so much of those good times. Thanks for this, Jared! Have a good'n!

Nice photos. My mother grew up in some little burg in West Virginia around Campbells Creek not too awful far from Charleston and some of the family worked the coal mines. Said when the depression hit, didn't matter much because they didn't have much anyway. I can only imagine those photos depicted what it looked a lot like back then. Thanks.👍🍻

My greatgrandmother lived in a house my great grandfather built from stone. It was behind my grandmothers house and you'd walk a a path to her house. Just about a 2 minute walk. My great grandmother wore those bonnets and long shirts and skirts and I'd see her all of the time picking strawberries. My great grandfather wore the overalls. I was 7 when he passed away. I have a photo of him in uniform. He was in WWI. You'd never have known he'd seen the world.

I guess he didn't want them going too far. I sold my grandmothers when she died in 2014 at 91. It didn't get much bit I have lots of memories and photos from it. There wasn't central heat or air. She had those gas heaters and window air conditioners. My grandad worked for the TVA so it was a nice house for the mountain.
I don’t think my Grandma, Sadie Portwood, ever really lost touch with her family’s Appalachian roots. Her family left Kentucky in the 1880s for Oklahoma. They were a tight knit family. They migrated further west during the Dust Bowl to become migrant fruit/nut/cotton pickers during the 1930s, living in tent villages that were put together specifically for the fruit pickers. Back then, everyone who migrated to California was called an “Okie”, whether they were from Oklahoma or North Carolina or Tennessee! They were all called Okies, and I think they wore that name proudly. It meant family and faith and hard work and strong bonds. She met my grandpa at one of the tent cities. Grandpa had been a hobo and rode the rails. They married when she was 15 and he was 19, raised four children, and were together for 53 years before Grandma passed. While I was being raised as a military child, we got stationed in Virginia, and Grandma and Grandpa came back to visit. While visiting, they immersed themselves in the culture of bluegrass. I think it was because Grandma never forgot her roots. (I recall her telling me once how her Grandpa Van Brunt had been a fiddle player, and how her other grandpa, Grandpa Blankenship - the grandpa from Kentucky - had been a square dance caller.) Anyway, as I grew up and moved back to California, Grandma and Grandpa took me with them to several of their bluegrass festivals. It enriched my childhood. I could feel the sense of family, kinship, and love at these bluegrass festivals. It was almost palpable. Grandma often spoke of her good friend, Rose Maddox. It was not until coming back from a bluegrass festival last summer where I live now in Washington State, that I learned that Grandma’s friend was _the_ Rose Maddox. Last summer I also learned that this part of Washington State (the west side of the Cascade Mountains), was settled by Appalachians back in the 30s and 40s. (Loretta Lynn was one of them, and she got her start in country music here in my area of Washington!) Anyway, I thought you would want to know that you can take a family out of Appalachia… but it’s near impossible to take Appalachia out of a family. Lots of love!
