I like how it feels like a typical open pit coal mining operation. Then it starts to twist into something odd and then otherworldly. But most of all, this video leaves me wanting to see more of the goliath at the end. I feel like it was taking form and the video stopped before it's form began to truly take shape.
Headcanon: The miner in the video is the same kid we've seen in "Run Boy Run," all grown up. He feels lost without a purpose, and he's throwing all this energy into something he thinks is unfulfilling. He still has an overactive imagination, but now it's used to conjure up dark and disturbing thoughts, and he feels trapped in them, in both the real world and the world shaped by the reality he's in now.
This is just like the video from Iron, a wellmade yet simple introduction for us to the deeper concept of the album, which also represents the sound of it. Iron pictured the heroic sound of The Golden Age, and now Goliath pictures the industrial sound of the upcoming album, just to introduce us to the storytelling. Great beginnings often lead up to great stories!
Add me to the list of folks who got pulled out of Locke & Key enough to say, "I need to find out who sings this." The voice reminds me of a more chill Karl Hyde (Underworld, Born Slippy).

dolpe it’s not the workers’ efforts that are the fuel, its society’s thirst for energy and convenience that energy density provides. Let’s not kid ourselves - the energy industry would not exist if it was not for demand for their products. WE are the fuel, Goliath is our monster.
@@Cataclysm1 I appreciate your response, I think it's an important point, but do you honestly believe the average person is hell-bent on fueling the climate crisis? We are not bad apples, we are apples in bad barrels that would otherwise be good. Capitalism makes the efficiency you see here possible. Capitalism is why fossil fuel exploration is an honest career and not a hazard to workers and life. An edifice that makes humans self-destructive is an edifice that needs to be overcome.
Woodkid is a better director than actual Hollywood folks. Everytime he's involved with something behind the camera (The Rihanna Anti Trailers, the Black Atlass clip, and many others) and the visual artistry is out of this world, and of course the music is awesome. He clearly has a strong visual and musical identity, and I feel like that could work really well in movie form. I'm sure he could get something going with a few phone calls. “Monsters exist, but they are too few in number to be truly dangerous. More dangerous are the common men, the functionaries ready to believe and to act without asking questions.” - Primo Levi
My view of Goliath: The worker resembles the small percentage of us that frees himself from "human blindness" and starts seeing the repercussions of his and others acts; these days we turn a blind eye to Earth's corrosion, stone by stone as a result we "blindly" created Goliath, which we see in the end, as the monster. But is this Goliath Earth's champion? Or is he here to retribute Man's pollution fingerprint? The best part is the freedom this music gives us to imagine and reflect ;) Amazing music and message as always Woodkid ;) Thank you!

Well he didn't free himself completely on his own he only became aware after being told he is no longer needed this machine that does a faster more efficient job then all of the workers combined but causes more destruction then all them combined causing more pollution

Damn, the terrifying truth behind the consumers industry. The more you try to dig out the truth, the more that gets revealed about the industry. I love how the monster signifies what we’re doing to our earth.
@@abd-cf6oj It won't actually end, we will have fossil fuel until the end of the century but the production will be forced to decreased. Because of peak oil or because of climate change forcing us to give up on them
I think the issue is that our impact can be significant, but it also isn't due to just how colossal the earth truly is. Resource management and good stewardship is important. We want to preserve our environment because we live here. Very few would care about mining an asteroid or the far side of the moon, or mars. As far as emissions goes, we've been 10 years from global catastrophe for fifty years, lol. As in politicians wanting to pad their foreign bank and company pockets always try to pass laws restricting local energy production so that they can earn fat bank from their foreign investments selling extremely marked up energy back to us. Plus, we have nuclear, the cleanest and safest power source ever discovered, yet these 'green' politicians curb it at every chance to lock local energy production down so that they can force us to by foreign energy at extreme mark ups. If we went to nuclear fission + electric cars, we could have vastly reduced our fossil fuel consumption by like 99% (we still need petroleum products to produce medicines, polymers, batteries, tires, roads, concrete, buildings), so we could use it to build instead of burn. In other words, if you see a 'green' politician shutting down fossil fuels / coal, but not promoting nuclear - or going against nuclear as well, he's just lining his own pockets and doesn't give a shit about the environment, and in fact hurts it, as we will instead import our fuels, which drastically raises the amount of CO2 generated from transportation.
First half of video felt like Tenet. Second part felt like Death Stranding. Insane quality for a MV. Better than most movies out there! Credit to the producers!
"Down there where coal is dug is a sort of world apart which one can quite easily go through life without ever hearing about. Probably majority of people would even prefer not to hear about it. Yet it is the absolutely necessary counterpart of our world above. Practically everything we do, from eating an ice to crossing the Atlantic, and from baking a loaf to writing a novel, involves the use of coal, directly or indirectly. [...] In order that Hitler may march the goose step, that the Pope may denounce Bolshevism, that the cricket crowds may assemble at Lords, that the poets may scratch one another’s backs, coal has got to be forthcoming." The Road to Wigan Pier George Orwell, 1937
@@MrHerecomesjohnny The world is still largely dependant on fossil fuels. Renewable energies are an option but too inefficient and unclean (in production). Nuclear is also an option but always carries hazards, even with modern reactors. Fusion is the holy grail of energy production with virtually limitless fuel and close to no downsides. We should pool all our resources into fusion research, it would solve the energy requirements for the forseeable future and beyond.

Besides this song giving me chills deluxe I really appreciate the visuals from 3:28 - 3:40! Sometimes when I close my eyes I have these consecutive visual segments just translating into each other indefinitely until I open my eyes again. Watching this video just hits me WOODKID!
For anyone wondering, the vid seems to have been filmed in the german coal mine of Welzow-Süd, one of the biggest coal mines in the world, and yes, this machinery is what you'll find on site.
I tried very hard, but on 2:43 I burst into tears. The analogy of walking workers and conveyor of coal to the furnace is very strong. Our work, aspirations, energy - all this goes into the huge forge of capitalism and nurtures an invincible giant. Invincible? Without a title, this song would be completely hopeless. But Goliath was killed by a brave determined guy. This clip makes me feel like every employee has a sleeping David inside. One day he will wake up and clearly see his true enemy. I must be just tired. I was so tired that on ordinary days I do not have enough strength and time to notice how tired I am. The whole world is tired. Masterpiece.
I love the effect his eyes have , the scary jaws of the machine as it digs, the monster that grows and we continue to feed it. We're slaves to it and our own nature. Don't know how we will get away.

I like how it feels like a typical open pit coal mining operation. Then it starts to twist into something odd and then otherworldly. But most of all, this video leaves me wanting to see more of the goliath at the end. I feel like it was taking form and the video stopped before it's form began to truly take shape.
Headcanon:
The miner in the video is the same kid we've seen in "Run Boy Run," all grown up. He feels lost without a purpose, and he's throwing all this energy into something he thinks is unfulfilling. He still has an overactive imagination, but now it's used to conjure up dark and disturbing thoughts, and he feels trapped in them, in both the real world and the world shaped by the reality he's in now.
omg dats deep
Heh... need to smoke a joint and reread
Well the actor in this appears to have a slight cleft palate. The boy in the Run Boy Run video did not.
I think the run boy run kid died in “I love you”
The "Argent City" we see in Run Boy Run is similar to the shape of the coal factory we see at 2:49 too!

Bunch of workers just doing their jobs without questioning but this guy found out that all their efforts have become fuel for monster like entity
👏
Sadly it sums up modern times.
dolpe it’s not the workers’ efforts that are the fuel, its society’s thirst for energy and convenience that energy density provides. Let’s not kid ourselves - the energy industry would not exist if it was not for demand for their products. WE are the fuel, Goliath is our monster.
WOODKID 🤗
@@Cataclysm1 I appreciate your response, I think it's an important point, but do you honestly believe the average person is hell-bent on fueling the climate crisis? We are not bad apples, we are apples in bad barrels that would otherwise be good. Capitalism makes the efficiency you see here possible. Capitalism is why fossil fuel exploration is an honest career and not a hazard to workers and life. An edifice that makes humans self-destructive is an edifice that needs to be overcome.
The guy writes and sings a amazing song. But like it wasn’t enough, he directs a masterpiece of a music clip. Damn.
Looking forward to the rest of Goliath 😍

Why does this music video seem like it was made for death stranding, Kojima brilliance is once again baffling me... such a genius

Fantastic analysis! Couldn't have said it better myself :)
Well he didn't free himself completely on his own he only became aware after being told he is no longer needed this machine that does a faster more efficient job then all of the workers combined but causes more destruction then all them combined causing more pollution

Some of the best colour grading I've seen. The colours expertly pop while keeping skintones and the environment looking so stunningly natural, sterile but dirty. It should be used for teaching

Well fossil fuel might end in about 10 years or something so we good but actually not
@@abd-cf6oj It won't actually end, we will have fossil fuel until the end of the century but the production will be forced to decreased.
Goliath is definitely the best name for an ultra machine, a simple button turns off the mountain destroyer...

@@MrHerecomesjohnny The world is still largely dependant on fossil fuels. Renewable energies are an option but too inefficient and unclean (in production).

The song with the video - a piece of art!
that sound...it sounds like a machine actively breathing. it's like the machines that we've created have outgrown us and now live a life of it's own
The title fits perfectly. The sound really gives me the feeling that I'm standing in front of a giant, menacing Goliath...

I love the effect his eyes have , the scary jaws of the machine as it digs, the monster that grows and we continue to feed it. We're slaves to it and our own nature. Don't know how we will get away.
