I couldn't afford a JMJ, but I really wanted a Mustang (with the original pickup configuration), so I went with a Squier Classic Vibe. I find these instruments to be very underrated, I think they nail that woody thumpy tone from the 60's really well, even better than a P bass. Even when I do pop recordings and I add some nasty compression and a bit of EQ, the tone coming out of this thing is MASSIVE.
An appeal to Fender: please consider manufacturing some short scale bass for left handed people! Been hankering after one and this looks fantastic but will forever be confined by my orientation... I can't be the only one?
In the same boat as you. It's to the point where I've started learning how to play right handed. That's partially just to do something different but also so that if I see a right handed bass I like, I can actually play it buy it instead of having to search endlessly for a left handed version.
Yes they come with Fender Flats, JMJ uses Daddario Chromes flat himself which he says are pretty similar in feeling and sound, either way I changed to Labella MUS, more mellow and dark sound.

On this quest myself currently! Frustration knows no limits!
Omar from The Mars Volta has a sweet old lefty one. They are out there.

Where it's at!
1:36 Haha well, I like it!
Damn this hurts the wallet hard!
What amp is that?
for me it needs the racing stripe BUT i am not a bass payer so i don't really care! it still looks cool though.
Does JMJ use flatwound strings?
Looks like Fender flats, green silk, here. Otherwise D'Addario Chromes.
I read somewhere that he does. This Mustang is supposed to ship with flat wounds if I remember correctly.
