- Fisher Technical Services, Inc. (FTSI) is a Las Vegas-based entertainment automation company best known for its sophisticated "Navigator" software and automation products. Their work spans the entertainment world from movie sets to theme parks, theaters to rock tours, and everything in between. FTSI's mechanical design and fabrication services, automation software, and show control system were used extensively for the Macau Bubble Show, as well as in a myriad of the most technologically advanced theaters and attractions in the world.
In 2009, sixteen of the largest private corporations in China decided to finance the Chinese Private Enterprise Pavilion at the 2010 World Expo. They reached out to Fisher Technical Services to create their dream of a kinetic sculpture and 120 days later they had a grid array of 1,008 150mm diameter spheres, each suspended and motivated by its own micro winch.
Jaw dropping stuff. I don't get surprised or taken aback by much. That blew me away though. So beautiful to watch. My mouth got a bit dry from being open for six min's or so. He he. Each ball is made of dense steel attached with a very fine steel string to the ceiling where it is control by micro winches on motors. Now control the timing and distance allowed of each ball to go up and down to create whatever pattern you want. Hell of a lot of programming and wiring involved with this very simple looking sculpture.
Very beautiful and technically superior. I'd replace the music after 2:50 however as it becomes really cheesy -- like being at a ice skating program. For me it goes over the top after 5:06. Try watching some of this with sound muted and it becomes spatial poetry.
Agree! This deserved my h better more futuristic music, with a little funk. Someone should redo this with better music.
Kinda hard to believe that they're all on micro wires, it looks more CGI to me. Don't get me wrong, this vid was awesome!

Is it just me or does it seem a lot more like a good job at computer animation than a kinetic sculpture. I'd like to see the machinery or at least a person interacting with one of the spheres before I'll believe it.

It is alchemy, lumen alchemy ;o)
If you watch this at the highest resolution you will see the wires that connect the spheres to the winches above the supporting superstructure. The spheres obviously are weighted so that they do not wobble or move if there is any ambient air movement. IMHO: the music is a bit much. It destroys the poetry of motion by overdramatizing it.
