These vlogs Adam, are the most meticulous masterclasses in wringing every last ounce of composition from a scene. Delievered in such an inclusive and gentle way I forget where I am and am brought right into it, there with you. You teach so much and share so many details, it truly is the best format and content of its type I have ever had the privilege to watch. Thank you so much for giving your time to share with us. I'll be going for a dusk walk now and bringing your podcast along for company. Cheers bud. 😊👍
I am really fascinated by the nursing log and the tree growing from it. The new tree I guess is around 50 years old. So the nursing log, which is quite large, must be several hundred years old and is still serving a purpose. That is a beautiful forest!
What a wonderful place but it still takes all your skill and perseverance and hard work to produce great images. Well done and thanks for sharing your thought processes to achieve such beautiful photos. More please. Thanks MJ
Beautiful scenery Adam, thanks for sharing. Your eye for composition really helps me in my journey in learning the art.
The Choice of the music that Mr. Grumpy is taking, is always onpoint
Great location Adam, tricky conditions but you came away with some shots.👍
Love the really wide pano including both leaning trees on the right. Because they are more involved in the composition they direct you focus towards the main point of the secondary growth. Spot on - MJ
Hi Adam - absolutely love the tree root photos!! Thanks for highlighting how to 'work' a scene over more than one day in pursuit of a better image whilst learning all the time. Fantastic!!
Cool drone shots and really enjoy you sharing your thinking process, especially in challenging circumstances. Cheers.
Lovely shots Adam especially that print,👍🏻 such lovely ambient light coming from above
Cheers, Tom!
A 30 minute long video by Adam, I got happy. I love a nice long video by one of my favorite photographers.
My favorite of the series is actually the roots! It will be interesting to see what variations of them you get in the future.
Thanks Adam for another great video to show your thought process of finding a good composition, I particularly like the 2 panos of the trees. Also, special thanks for the link to the photograph gloves, I really need a good pair, my hands were freezing 🤣 when I was out shooting, going to get one soon! 👍💕
love the root photo @ 23:30. Awesome!
I really appreciate your thoughtful and detailed discussion. I find it very educational and inspirational. In short, I love your style.
Just got back from shopping, and lo and behold, there is Yorkshire tea on the shelf at Central Market in Poulsbo! I'm anxious to try it tomorrow morning.
I really enjoyed this vid. The tree growing out of another ancient tree makes you think some. That's the shot. The leaning tree trunk looks annoying(pre-pic) but the finished product uses it well. It belongs in the pic. I don't see how it could be improved upon. Such good information and explanation.
I always learn something from your videos. Thanks!
Your compositions are very precise and I understand that pains you take to get it right. How lovely to see a true professional at work.
I was on your workshop in 2018 and got a gorgeous shot of Avatar Grove. Much appreciated.
Always good for you to take us amongst old growth. I like the drone shot (it has been done to death because it always delivers and doesn’t seem to get tiresome) and the eroded roots shot - look forward to better conditions taking you back. That is a great alleyway of photographic crack cocaine - Fairy Lake, Avatar Grove and on up to Big Lonely Doug - maybe next year.....thanks Adam 👍
Nicely seen and captured. The new exit sequence of posting the print is indicative of the content and intent of your channel. I stay true to your channel because you stay true to the art and passion for the final image. Cheers and thanks.
My favorite type of environment.
Thanks Adam, that creek is similar to many we have in Australia. The only time you get a flow is in heavy rain. Great video, I always enjoy.
Love how you think and endeavour to make sense of and simplify these messy but magnificent forests. Thanks again. 😀
Adam, your best video for a while I think because of more of the thought process shown in this video, it is very welcome and appreciated. A lot of TH-cam landscape photography videos seem to be just adverts for prints.
Essential viewing for me; thank you!
Am I the only one who sees the chaos in the bottom half of the image an the comparatively ordered forest above? Adam has provided a glimpse of the busy chaotic interdependent world under the forest, like a iceberg we normally see just a small part of ecosystem when we are actually standing on the larger part of a symbiotic world.
Yep Adam, another well thought out video, with some classic images. 🥸🥸
Thanks for sharing your process as you figured out the composition. I have those same gloves. I agree they are wonderful
Always informative to see how you approach a scene to find your composition. I'm also a big believer in returning to the same locations over the years; they can appear very different depending on the weather, light, time of year, etc. Keep up the good work, always a pleasure to see your videos on a Sunday.
Always enjoy the walk throughs and the PP renditions Adam. Also can certainly vouch for the Vallerret gloves. Use them along with the shells during the Upstate NY winters!
Hope you all doing ok with this heat wave, stay safe, best wishes
Great video. My wife bought me those gloves for Christmas.
Inside the composition, figuratively and literally (at 22’06). Love your weekly sharing and just received the first prints: Stunning & inspiring (to compose my own photography).
Adam in this video you showed us how difficult it is to come up with a good composition. In the process you showed us how you wrestled with different elements in the scene, to come up with an optimum composed scene. I think there are a lot of viewers that are wondering how does one develop this sense of aesthetic for coming up with pleasing compositions? How did you develop this? How can we develop this taste for pleasing compositions? Perhaps you could devote a portion of a video (or videos), as what we should consider to make an artful arrangement of graphic elements in the scene in from of our eyes. I think this is a skill, that one cannot walk into a store and purchase, like a camera, or lens (purching something over a counter is the easy way to improve one's photography, but once you have the gear, then how does one improve one's photography? (Tough subject matter, I know.)
Keep wondering with your eyes opened-take chances, go further, eat your breakfast! Have fun!!!! My $50.00 old used Nikon does magic. You do not have to spend a lot of $$$$$$$. I have seen 8x10 camera photos that are not interesting. Adam, you have the gift!!!!! It is a gift you know. :)
Except for a sharp lens, it’s not at all about the gear.
Really appreciate all the work you put into these videos.
It is amazingly helpful that you explain your thought processes in considering and taking the picture. Thanks very much.
I can't top the soliloquy of the the last gent. Another beauty.
Thanks!
One of your better vlogs. Keep up the good work.
Great photos as always! Love your videos.
great pano at the end and showing how worth while it is to come back to same locations
Great video! I have the same brand of gloves but the more heavy duty version (Ipsoot). Was out for 3 hours this morning in Ontario with 50+ km/h winds off of Lake Ontario and no issues with hand warmth or using my camera buttons. I did get my Snowy Owl and crashing waves photos. Then an Adam Gibbs video to top it off!
Lovely video Adam, you must have been cold sleeping out as it looked very chilly! Really like the new print display section at the end of your videos now, it’s lovely to see the finished prints after a trip out.
How nice to watch an Adam Gibbs video after reading upsetting news stories about American politics. I'm living in Thailand for now (damn Covid!) and ordered a print a few weeks ago that came via Thai Post today. I was amazed that it arrived intact and unblemished all the way from Canada. It's a beautiful print that I've admired since the first time I saw it on your channel a year ago. Now I have a copy of my very own.
Keep up the good work, Adam.
That's great David! I remember your order well since it was one of only two to Thailand. ;-)
Always a great addition to the day’s first coffee.
Great stuff Adam. I would have thought that a portrait of the transition between the two trees aligned with the stream would have made a great shot, but I wasn't there. Thanks for sharing your images with us!
Great job on this, Adam! I quite enjoyed it. Quiet and peaceful! Thank you. Nick
Hello I looked at this location and my wife and I both said that’s the print we bought. Two of your images arrived last week to the uk. Wonderful. Thank you. Great video as always
That is awesome! glad that they made it in one piece ;-)
Saw the title and immediately thought of Jeremy's discussion with Matt Payne on the F-stop podcast. Love how you guys feed off each other's strengths to improve your own photography/process!
Good to see you are using proper Norwegian photo gloves. Very good video... i want the Fujifilm medium format system :-)
Love your work Adam! I live in Richmond Hill (a bit north of Toronto) and bought these gloves too, and unfortunately, although they are well built, they don't do their job when it's -5C / 23F and below that.
Thanks for the info!
Spot on, Adam. My heart is always for the forest. The ever changing beauty that has a mind of her own. Gorgeous area. What a beast of a camera... (Details+perseverance+intuition)+(light*no sky)=drool. 😁
Pano ends with NO! 🤣 Enjoying your work and approach btw.
Hello Adam, I liked your last two pictures of the tree. Have you thought about going even closer, limit the view even more to just the tree junction? Forget about the creek and the other trees around.
I think that the tree growing out of the fallen log, but also the details to the right of the junction on the fallen one, are the interesting part.
It is great to see the print at the end.
Nice work Adam great pano👍
Awesome as always Adam...
Thanks for taking us out with you today.
Nice images and vlog. Did I spy the best tea in the world Yorkshire Tea? a proper brew.👍🙂
Good to see that Yorkshire Tea has made it to BC. A wise choice!
I want those gloves!!!!!! I have my ski mittens, gloves, etc. NG Very big and not warm, must take them on and off--and what if I drop one!!!! I have never been up where you are shooting, a magical place!! I shoot every day practically at a lagoon and every day the light shows me something beautiful!!!! Cheers!
Hi Adam. Another excellent video, as always there were many great takeaways but coming back to try again and listening to intuition definitely top of the list for me today. Apparently you and I are using the same hair stylist, except I've let my beard go longer. Stay safe and thanks for sharing.
The drone footage was great. I loved the look of the snow on the trees
Lots of scenes and amazing shots. I enjoyed it as always! 👍
Nice one Adam, really calming video being in the forest and it's my go to place. Great images mate.
Enjoyed the vlog very much Adam. Thnx. Also thougt the panorama’s where a great idee. Never thougt of it myself.
Always enjoy your presentations. Would a vertical orientation lended more the stretch of the nurse tree and the diagonal leaning and supporting it. Maybe bringing in some of water flow.
Thanks for the blog
Another great video, thanks Adam!!
Love the extended format of this week's video. I hope it wasn't too much trouble to give us additional content. If it was extra work for you, sorry about that, but it was worth it.
Really interesting to see your process in finding the composition. The 23mm pano was my favorite, the format suits forest scenes so well.
Also, I got those Valleret gloves a month ago, and they’re great, don’t know how I managed without the flip caps.
An unnamed grove, by the way? Maybe it should be Gibbs Grove! 🤔
Suggestion for product development: Valleret should put some flavour on the fingertips, since I use my teeth almost all the time 😂
15:14 ghost in the car!
I subscribed a few weeks ago and just now figured out why my TH-cam feed is suddenly full of BeeGees videos. 😆
Nice to see you're drinking Yorkshire tea!
wow so beautiful. I love this nature.
Beautiful photos as always 💕☺️
Wow what great forests scenes. Is it always that luch/green in those ancient forests year round? In wintertime with snow I wouldn't expect ferns to grow...
yeah it's temperate so the ferns stick around through the winter and then die back for new growth in the spring. Temps on the coast are very mild compared to the rest of Canada.
@@QuietLightPhoto Thank you for your reply Adam :-). Could you tell me when the ferns are grown back on Vancouver Island in spring?
I'm photographing a lot of forests in Germany (mostly beech and birch forests) and would love to visit the ancient rainforest on Vancouver Island sometime after the pandmic.
It's sad to hear that so many are logged down. While I can understand the economic need for some people, I believe there is much more value in preservation in the long term.
top job as always
LOL, ordered those same gloves at the beginning of January from Henry's but they haven't shown up yet! I really liked the image with the roots and the drone shot as well. I see my print is on the way so looking forward to that! Cheers Adam!
I got the last pair, Ill sell you mine at an inflated price if you like ;-)
Hi Adam, thanks so much for the great content. I am guessing you are always looking for new areas to try out close to home as we all are. Have you given a thought to Washington Mt. up island? Have been there a couple of times and it is reminiscent of Mt. Seymour area.
Cheers
Hi Adam, I wonder what the shot would have looked like if you went up the hill on the right and shot the tree using the fallen log as a guiding line to the stamp growing out of it? Maybe a vertical shot? :)
I would have gone low and vertical across the stream including the stream or placing one of those ferns in the foreground to counterbalance to nurse tree on the top also to reveal more of that tree. Just an idea not actually being there does make it harder to see what you are working with.
This image raises an important question like why one should always look for great and iconic images? Should every image have XYZ to make it great? For me, the first image works. It is all about the trees and fallen log and how they interact and the moss add to the setting. Since you have compared it with the second image, the viewer might tend to lean more towards it, but in the absence, it is perfectly all right.
One more thing. Should every image be processed?
Well there is nothing iconic about this spot. The point of the video is to define what it is that you want to photograph and then portray it so that it is clear and concise to the viewer. It may not work but it is for me anyway a way to go through a visual checklist that support your intent. What is it that you like about a scene and how do I portray that subject in a way that is clear to the viewer. The first image for me didnt work because it didn't define what I really enjoyed about the scene. Processed, absolutely not but if you're shooting RAW images then yes! I talk a bit about this in this video th-cam.com/video/r2X3YK1fIRA/w-d-xo.html
@@QuietLightPhoto Agreed, it is all about photographing the way we see it and the way we like it. That is the freedom a photographer enjoys and rightly so and so is the viewer. Processing, the RAW image looked better for me!
Cheers.
Curious what does the scene look like from the other side of the log? And do you ever shoot the stream looking down stream so you can see where it goes instead of where it comes from? Dumb question? Or a topic for another video?
Living in the PNW, I think that I've become desensitized to most of these scenes (in general).
Problem solved with that pano. It looks great and sets the scene in a typical forest environment.
Next time you go take the chain saw! :)
I really appreciate how you use the location (around 4-5 min mark) to explain the challenges you need to deal with for your composition... shows the importance of craft dealing with the needs of the artist... and the details to get the 'right composition'... done to death doesn't mean you shouldn't do it again... I am glad you did... A question.... or maybe a wonder.... based on your observations of the challenges at the scene, would getting your camera higher, reducing the angling up (extend that tripod to its max) for Avatar Creek help to reduce the sky, and maybe add a little more foreground... might mean having to have a small step stool to reach your camera and its viewing screen at the 7+ foot level??? and that may not be possible... I like the composition at the 28 minute mark better than from the day before... once again... THANK YOU for inspiration and the teaching....
Yes it would and I did have the tripod as high as I could work with. Step stool, not here too much to carry.
@@QuietLightPhoto you may need to haul out your old 4X5 with the lens/film tilt arrangement... (just kidding of course)
those gloves will Go well under a pair of Bernie's mittens !! they well
Love those old mossy trees!
And how do you stay warm when sleeping in that van? Battery powered blanket? If it's cold enough to snow, it's cold enough to brrrr. 🥶
Just a decent sleeping bag but at some point I will be putting a heater in the van.
Adam, you need to look into getting some sort of satellite-linked water level sensor that would provide timely data to help you predict when the level would be just right. Not sure if a turnkey solution exists, but someone with a bit of know-how could probably cook one up for you in a jiffy.
Wet and soupy - yuk!
Thanks for another cracking video Adam , also just received my print today and it’s bloody lovely 😊
Question what’s that board that you are putting your prints up on , the one with the magnetic thingies ?
Thanks, Andrew! so glad you like it. The board is a magnetic glass board. Basically plate glass with a sheet of metal behind it. There are cheaper versions but dont look as nice. The only problem with it is that the surface is so smooth that the larger heavier print slide down as the magnets are not powerful enough to hold on tight so I have to use several large magnets. The surface can also be used to write notes on which is very handy. I got mine from ULINE but I think Amazon also sells them. Mine is 8 x 4 feet and cost $600 so not cheap but well worth it if you do a lot of printing.
@@QuietLightPhoto thanks Adam I will take a look on Amazon , cheers for the info
That pano was well worth printing. I hope to give my own new Valleret gloves a test after a blizzard blows through the US East Coast this week. My long thin fingers are very frostbite susceptible.
Any thoughts on the newly announced GFX 100S? I won't get one unless I hit the lottery but I am a bit of a gear head.
Well the new GFX100 would certainly be lighter on both the pocket book and in the pack.
Thx Adam. Wondering about your thoughts of the drone as a scouting tool. Have you ever shot a place (with your big camera) that you wouldn’t have known was there except for seeing it with the drone?
Thank you for the video, I learnt a lot. I need to spend far more time and use my live view when considering my composition. I tend to hand hold the camera (Nikon D7200) as I am reluctant to use my tripod, feeling awkward with people about, but it would slow me up. I'm going to use it now and take my time. Another thing; I spotted your box of Yorkshire tea (a particularly big box to). I drink PG Tips and wonder if this has a negative impact on my performance. Do you have a Yorkshire Tea link / code?
Actually I prefer the Scottish Blend Tea but have to have my friend Paul Thomson send it over to me from the UK
Nice video Adam, for the ISO 1600 are you using LR or Capture One for RAW processing.
ALSO...not to sound weird but where did you get your pants, been looking for something like those.....lol
Lightroom. The pants are from Fjallraven, Kebs
Be careful with those Gloves and Drones, the magnets that hold the Fingertip in place can irretate the Compass inside the Drone :)
I discovered that too. I couldnt figure out why the Calibration kept failing. LOL.
even if you managed to get a good calibration before, when you turn on the drone with those gloves and directly start, the drone might immediately crash, better turn it on on the ground and leave it there for a minute or so, than it should be okay even with those gloves :)
I was hoping to see a picture of that big tree the blue people live in. ;~)
