Thanks Ross, I’m in zone 7a, and I have limited space so that it’s more reasonable to get early figs like Celeste and Ronde de Bordeaux. I can at least get a decent harvest before the summer ends.
I thank guys like you and Ben, the older bros who went ahead of us all to light the way for all who would follow. I'm starting with Violette de Bordeaux, Yellow Long Neck, Negronne, Black Madeira, Violette Sollies, and Col de Dame Noir. In Southern California.
Ross you give great advice to start with a base of a few varieties that do really well in our climate. Then later we can build our collection if we want to and when we have so much more knowledge and experience.
I have 5 figs right now (Hardy Chicago, Improved Celeste, 2x VdB, and a Green Ischia that I'm not sure if I'll keep long term). I'll propagate and put Hardy Chicagos in the ground and...maybe acquire 3-4 more varieties (likely RdB, Smith, I258). That's probably enough for me. I'll give some thought to grafting some of the other varieties onto the Hardy Chicago's in the ground.
I agree. When i first started i purchased a lot of the most inexpensive varieties i could find. Alma, Magnolia, Texas evb, etc. These are great if you just want a tree that produces but if you are wanting to start a collection of much better tasting varieties slow down and do some research before you ever make a purchase. Binge watch a lot of these videos so you have an understanding of how to grow them before you ever start. Check the zone you are in because not all figs should be put in the ground.
Hi. Thank you for your teaching; I am learning a lot. I planted 4 fig trees in my property. The first one 5 years old never produce, now I'm at least getting figs for first time form the others I planted later. I am reproducing some, and like to add more varieties in my property. What are your top 5 quality / flavors varieties in your area. I'm N.C zone 7b so I am very similar to your zone. Thanks again.
Thanks Ross...I have been growing figs since 2011, you hit it on the nail. No need for more varieties. The best in our Zone are: VDP, RDB, PETERS HONEY, I258, Chicago Hardy, Celeste, BMVS, Panache, white M. Others are nice to have but does not provide the same fulfillment. Thank again

Celeste, LSU purple/gold, brown turkey, black mission, Texas everbearing, Olympian, Marseille, Nero, Kadota. What do say about sourcing several of the same variety & pick the best out of those?
Clearest video on the subject to date; timely, saved us so much time, money and work. I built much of my collection from your recommendations. My instincts were telling me not to go crazy...went a little wild. It's like tulip inflation on fig bid, but really a I want multiple copies of the best varieties and get some trees in the ground in 6b..I did get an i258 for 16 bucks though 😉
I know this is an old comment but I curious if you ever planted any in the ground here in Florida. I think next year I am going to try some of my favorites in large raised bed style setups and see how it goes.
Aaron Marsh all of my fig trees are in Big pots. I tried planting one in the ground but it died. For me they do well in the pots. I may revisit trying to plant one in ground again to see how it will do.
@@crystalm2819 I'm sorry to hear that. I am going to do very large geotextile fabric pot/raised bet to help protect the plant from the nematodes in my sandy soil and see how it goes next year. I wish you luck!
I am trying to propagate my brown turkey fig from cuttings. I wanted rooting hormone but garden store sold me upstart type product. Interchangeable? Thx!
Great video Ross. I have a JFE Black Madeira that is grafted onto a Brown turkey root stock. I'm sure the Brown Turkey root stock will help the slow growth rate for BM but i'm wondering if it will also help with ripening the figs any earlier for your climate?
@@RossRaddi for a plant addict like me, but that being said I like to have a lot of verity of fruit so I don’t like to waste space. The amount of variation in flavor of figs is why I don’t really see a big issue with having so many as long as they aren’t redundant for no reason like the name

I only have one fig and I have no idea what it's called. But I love her.
I have 2 unknowns like that too lol. Wont know for sure what they are until they grow some tasty fruit! Happy holidays!

I get them for $5 qt size. Helps to have fig networking friends.
