It's crazy how Tortoise sounds like the most technical band but also the most chillin band at the exact same time
Tortoise is pretty much the only band that I would literally kill to see live. They replicate their songs so wonderfully. I've proudly been a Tortoise fan for years, and have no intention to stop, ever.
Amen, brother! I've been a fan for a long time as well. Post rock, in general. You listen to Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Explosions in the Sky, Isotope 217? or Mogwai?
I left a comment on this same video roughly 2.5 years ago praising Tortoise and this performance. I had only been listening to them for a few months, but I fell in love with them hard.
2.5 years later I know every Tortoise song like the back of my hand, and they can still give me goosebumps. Remarkable group of musicians.
I ran into Jeff Parker at the Book Fair in L.A. this past spring. He was walking around with his daughter and it was packed. I was walking toward him and because of the crowds almost ran into him, which is how I recognized him. I just blurted out "are you Jeff Parker from Tortoise?" and he said he was. He stopped and chatted for a minute as I told him what a fan I was, and he introduced his daughter and signed a fair brochure for me. He said Tortoise was indeed working on new music and he hoped it would be out "soon". Super cool and accommodating guy. Hope we get us some new Tortoise in the new year...
+Douglas Stephens Sweet!!
+Douglas Stephens Cool story. . They have no other equal musically or creatively. They just don't seek out any fame or fortune so they are very modest guys in person.
thats one of the things i like about them! that they're very down to earth individuals and their music reflects that!
Binging Tortoise tonight and found this set!! So wild this post is from 15 years ago in 2006 youtube was not even a year old yet.. trails blazed
Just realised I’ve been coming back to this clip for the last 18 years. Tortoise was the soundtrack to my twenties. Magic happened in that live set
10 years after it was recorded and still cant get past this set :D
I just remembered it!
wow, i cant believe ive only just found this band this very second. this music is so beautiful.
really beautiful melodies(i think thats how you spell it anyway).
If I could choose any band to be a member of, Tortoise would be it.
Swung from the gutters is the best song in the world!! Thanks for this vid! I love the scene with the drummers at 12:01 Its fantastic!
Such great drummers, they sound so smooth. Even the parts where they are both soloing sound great, it doesn't sound aggressive, it sounds like a collage of sound, like they're painting a texture over the music.
"Swung from the Gutters" is sweepingly gorgeous! I've been lucky enough to catch these guys live about 5 times, including Lounge Ax in Chicago. This is really a stand-out set. So much space. Thank you, Tortoise!
We just saw Tortoise in Vancouver Last week, We were tired from work and had work the nxt day,Tortoise picked us up and dropped us in our beds. I woke up with Tortoise playing in my head that morn. Truly great simple music. Thanks Tortoise.
Stretch (you are alright), The Lithium Stiffs, and Crest are from "It's All Around You". They are the 1st, 4th, and 5th songs, respectively. The 2nd and 3rd songs are Ten Day Interval, and Swung From The Gutters. They are off "TNT", which is my favorite album by them. The last song is Seneca, which is off of "Standards".
1. Stretch (You Are All Right)
2. Ten-Day Interval
3. Swung From The Gutters
4. Crest
5. Seneca
2004 i worked as soundasistent ,at the concert in Hamburg. Tortoise were very nice people!
Thank you for you great music

Still incredible 10 years later
i saw it a million times... and they never miss a hit... it´s incredible...
Well, from Portugal, i can only say, that i met, TORTOISE, just a few days ago, and...what a great band! Refreshing sound, with the guitars in their place...good sound!
listening to tortoise changed many things... seeing them live changed everything... Thanks Theorem, for reminding me one of the best moments my ears and eyes have ever lived!!! (if you guys haven't seen "reach the rock" GO RENT IT YESTERDAY)
When I worked as a cashier at Borders in Chicago, I was fortunate enough to have Jeff Parker in my line. We chatted briefly, but it was super busy. very cool guy!
Holy fuck they murdered Swung From The Gutters in the middle of it, but it was interesting in its own way, I definitely didn't expect that free jazz blow-out and it made my heart race
Amazing performance, especially the last two songs.
Best version of Swung From The Gutters ever. If you make music and are not influenced by this band you suck.
Girl at 18:52 knows what's up.
@JinjaB123 Tortoise is a melodic and beautiful ambient musical group. Slipknot sounds good for metal. Different color horse.
Didn't know them, but they got a BIG fan now! After listening the second tune I felt like hearing Steve Reich on a Rock band! Great! I'm a fan now! Great band!!!
When you look up "Real Deal", Tortoise is listed for music. Live it's like they reach into your heart and brain at the same time and flip the Tortoise switches on and you'll never be the same musically. Never.
Stunning set, really consumate pros. My main criticism of Tortoise is still that there's no 'hit' for easy access for the casual listener; with a set like this, who cares?
Such a great band! I love that sound.
This is amazing. Good thing there are still rock bands out there which search for a personal sound. Long live Tortoise.
WOW i have never heard of them before. the world needs ore musik like this!!!!!!!!!!!
amazing!!
tortoise is a excelent band
So glad this has been on here for so long (7 years now). This is one of the first videos I made playlist for. I think I called it "amazing."
"Stretch" - It's All Around You
"Ten Day Interval" - TNT
"Swung from the Gutters" - TNT
"The Lithium Stiffs" - It's All Around You
"Crest" - It's All Around You
"Seneca" - Standards
whenever i want to show people what's a great new band from the last 30 years i show them this video!
the first unknown was "Stretch (You Are All Right)"
the 2nd unknown was "The Lithium Shifts" and "Crest" (joined together), all from the album "It's All Around You".
Amazing.
What a stunning band. I wish they'd release their live performances on CD and DVD.
Tortoise is amazingly hypnotic.
seriously what other band has two drummers!
im finding all these bands lately that are off the CHAIN and have been around forever!!
King crimson, Melvi's. I'm sure there are others.
Love these boys music, seen them live and met them personally in a bar before. top musos
a beautiful band. killer drums
de los mejores setlive de tortoise, siempre buen momento para darle play!
I saw this video when it was posted. Great show!
saw them at bonnaroo 07... definitely one of my favorite shows
I love these guys, they're such great musicians.
I would love to see these guys live. this music is so fucking amazing and beautiful!!
the word sublime, has never got a better use than describing this band live performance!
They just the coolest
Really hoping for a new album been a while
Saw them at a tiny bar in rochester last summer. Nice fellas.
Wow. This is really great. I used to see Jeff Parker with the New Horizons Ensemble in Chicago in the early 90's. Always loved his playing. I had lost track of that Chicago scene for a while after I moved away. This group is really amazing.
Wow I'm glad I looked up this band. This is amazing! One of the most original bands I've ever heard.
ossom! it seems that rock doesn't have limits... there always be ways to explore it !!!
saludos desde colombia!
Simply amazing. I am in awe of this band.
CLASSIC 2018
this band has always been amazing, great musicians.
defenitely my favorite band....is just celestial music wish they come to Mexico someday
I could listen to the first song all day long
can't get tired of listening to it.
I love this set. Thanks for posting. Appreciated in the highest honors!!!
i love that "jazz machine" shirt that one of the guys is wearing
Awesome! I can't wait to see the at The Troubadour in July!
man i wish i could play drums like those guys
lo mejor que se puede estar experimentando en estas epocas!
Anyone got something from the concerts Tortoise did with Daniel Lanois?
That to me must have been like a match made in heaven.
This is really good, and so Lanois' improvised psychedelic steel guitar on top of this must be like the sun setting on a beatiful metallic ocean or something!
Thanx for uploading Theorem
great show, what a feeling.. love them!
I always liked this version of Ten Day Interval the best.
This is so great. A treasure. THANK YOU!!!!
Best version of Ten-Day Interval in this galore :-D
Starting at 5:00
The show they've played here in Brazil is in my top 10 list, for sure!
Tortoise are awesome! Apparently they're working on a new album that might come at the end of the year. Can't wait.
I watched 20 minutes of this, this was really good music.
I really enjoy watching this video!
awsome footage!
grazie
The Lithium Stiffs / Crest are so great.
6 years later they still are.

Wow I just found out about these guys yesterday, and I wish I had known what I was missing out on.
i want to like this every time i watch, i think i'm ~100 of the 700k views
+beatfox9 haha, i feel the same!
+beatfox9 I feel ya brotha. I've been watching this video since 2008 when i first learned about these guys. i think i might have a little problem.
I love how on "Crest", the crash symbols are played on the 2 and 4 and then switch back to the 1 and 3.
~w
the metal band Ministry had two drummers when i saw them one year - maybe like 2005? It was pretty great. Still this band Tortoise rules.
i saw them 3 times in BEL, but first time i see this :D nice vid !
Thankyou for this. Very cool indeed.
Agreed, I have to see them live. This is another band I discovered by accident and totally love!! P.S The Grateful Dead was never this dynamic, talented, or even interesting.
wow. you guys are awesome! i love this video. i dig that your style is pretty original.
Damn I love this band. Thanks for putting this up!
They are one of the top 3 shows I've ever seen. Pritzker Pavillion in Chicago, a FREE show too.
So cool. I love David Pajo, he's really left his mark on music.
If you get time check out Lucid Rivers
Was zekerst fijn! Mooie set. Deze long version riekt naar averageness, maar redt het met briljantie van de musici in kwestie. Watching this as I type. En R maakt op dit moment zijn schatten open (Japanse persing plus triple album) Soon to be heard.
SIE!
@winterchronic it truly is a wonderful thing
Thanks alot for the uploading
experimentación al máximo,terrible banda tortoise.
Most excellent indeed!!
guau!!! y pensar que estuvieron en chile!!!!!
