      It was a great project, and I very much enjoyed being part of it, got to know a wide range of unique characters. I feel that the documentary is an honest representation, and I would like to believe that it helps bring about a better understanding of what Millwall is all about.

    well done Anthony Lynch... you have the T shirt on I designed!.... you know this club has been so well supported by females for decades... some of us home and away since 1970....yet you haven't approached any for comment

    • @olejensen970

      Certainly a valid comment. The focus of the project was on the experiences of black Millwall fans, but I would very much have liked to include female Millwall supporters as well. But while I did approach, I didn't really get anywhere, and it was one of the main challenges of the project that many supporters (male, female, black, white) did not trust my motives, and therefore they decided not to take part.

I was lucky, as well, that Bede House was happy to host the project, and The Lottery found it worth funding. The, at times, unearned clemency aside - I think most of these guys are just racist; as has recently been shown, "being black and being Millwall" is on the condition that they (the black fans) are sufficiently obsequious - this is an interesting insight...

    • @olejensen970
      @olejensen970 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I am glad you find the documentary 'an interesting insight'. That said, one of the ambitions behind the documentary was to provide an understanding that went beyond the popular stereotype of Millwall fans as racist hooligans. Historically, being a black Millwall fan involved witnessing racist behaviour and targeting the opposition - players and fans - using racist chants. But it is also a story of how 'doing football' - as in playing, talking about, dreaming about - was very much part of a South London childhood, eventually (maybe) leading to The Den.
      Personally, I am a relative newcomer, but I have been to a good handful matches at The Den, went to different parts of the stands, but never experienced any racist chanting.
      What happened last Saturday can be interpreted in many ways. I find it saddening, as the booing, once again, undermines what the club has been attempting to do for many years. But the booing does, absolutely, not represent all Millwall fans.
      I could go on for a while, but will leave it for now.

    • @SacClass650

      @@olejensen970 I've no doubt they were cordial to you, however, that doesn't negate the plethora of racist conduct Millwall fans are guilty of. I'd add that one of the black fans in your film was recently filmed singing about how BLM "take it up the ass," to the approving laughter of his white audience.

      @@SacClass650 I haven't seen the footage, though I do have a quite good idea of who you might be referring to. But exactly which point are you making here?
      Once more, I'd disagree with the plethora (abundance) of racist conduct you are referring to. It doesn't reflect my experience, and I think there is a lot of truth to Reg Burr's claim, from back in 1993, that 'Millwall are a convenient coat-peg upon which football hangs all its evils'.
      btw, when did you last go down The Den?

      Everyone got stick down the Wall, to say black players were targeted is a myth. No one was immune. It was usually strikers that were abused as they were seen as a threat, but it could be anyone. The media only highlighted abuse, when it's a black player (even booing), ignoring the fact other opposition black player who were not.. .. The worst abuse I've witnessed were : Shilton, Norman, Birch, I Wright. Fleck, Ince, Crouch, Rix, David Jones, Speedie, K Dixon, L Hughes to name a few. Gascoigne & Merson got stick but won the crowd over with there skills
