August 15th was Oscar Peterson's birthday. The City of Toronto also declared this Oscar Peterson Day. Canada is very proud of Oscar's contribution to jazz and Hymn to Freedom was certainly an important work on a grand scale, affectionately "adopted" by the Civil Rights Movement. I was 18 when I saw Oscar play. Up until my fateful visit to a jazz club to see him play, I was a classically trained pianist with no exposure to live jazz. That performance changed me and the next 5 decades of my life! From that day I started my lifetime journey to learn jazz. If you too are this life journey, welcome! My pleasure - as always ☺
I’ve always loved this song. My favorite performance of it was “live in Denmark 1964”
Thanks for sharing that!
Great stuff, thanks, However, it need an e natural in the right hand in bar 1 otherwise it becomes a dim chord which you actually mentioned.
