As we were just trying to clean our cast iron grill, we thought about checking your channel to see if we were going about it correctly. Great to see Mike! I'd like to try one of those chainmail scrubbers... they look handy! I love the trick with the little bit of water as well. Thanks for the tips!
I haven’t really used cast iron much before. This morning I was making some breakfast burritos. After I got the eggs, cheese and everything else wrapped up in the tortillas, I needed to “toast” the burritos on both sides to give it a little crunch and melt the cheese. I remembered I had an old cast iron griddle (round and flat with a little lip on the edge, doesn’t have ridges) that belonged to my grandmother. Oh man, it worked beautiful! I’ve never been able to get tortillas to brown like that on an aluminum skillet. Only issue was some cheese spilled out and got stuck on the griddle. There is just enough lip on the griddle (maybe 1/4”) that I was able to pour in just enough water to cover the cheese. Turned the gas back on, let it boil, and the cheese came right off with just a little nylon scrub brush. So now I’m going to have to try doing so more cooking with cast iron. Now unrelated to that story - last week I was going through some drawers in the kitchen and found plastic thing with the notches like you showed for cleaning your grill pan. It didn’t have any writing on it and I said “what in the heck is this thing for?” I knew it came with something but I couldn’t remember what, or what it was used for. Mystery Solved!
@@MrCastIron here’s a burrito tip in case you or others don’t already know it. When you’re rolling up the tortilla and trying to get it to stay closed, mix up a little flour & water OR corn starch & water and dab a little bit of that on the inside of the “flap” of the burrito. Place that side down first on the skillet and then your burrito won’t come unwrapped. Saw that recently on a young lady’s TH-cam channel. Take care!
I just love your channel. Im enjoying using my cast iron now that Ive learned how to properly clean my pieces. I am going to brave getting a grill pan. I can keep it clean now that i know how. Thank you!

@@MrCastIron sounds deal! I was telling my coworkers about this channel today. Both from Georgia and swear by Iron! My dad had an old skillet from when he was a poor kid in the Bronx NY. Many old Italian families up here used a few pieces of iron for nearly everything.
I use the heating method for most of my tough jobs, followed by scrubbing with hot water and a nylon pad, followed by a small drop of dishsoap and warm water, followed by a rinse, followed by a heating to dry all surfaces. Seems to work (I always forget the oil at the end).
I see that you got a cast iron tea kettle I wish you would make a video on how to keep your cattle season without making the bad taste and coffee and tea with it
Well I really don’t use it but I should lol!! If it has a bad taste you could boil a mixture of vinegar and water and that should help. Let me know if you do that and how it turns out ok!!??
What is the care instructions for the Lodge Cast iron Smoker? I wasn’t sure if it was ok to leave on the grill for storage & if it needs to be cleaned. Also does it need to be seasoned?
So I recently bought a lodge and im already making rookie mistakes. Not oiling, and using to high heat. Because of this, it left burnt marks that I cant get off. I bought that chain scrub but i think i scrubbed too hard😭 and i can see my scrub marks.. am i doomed?
No, you are not doomed! You can fix it by cooking some 73/27 or 80/20 hamburger meat. I would only use the chainmail if I had something that would not come off any other way and then only lightly. Typically after cooking, take a paper towel and wipe out the excess grease. Add some water and heat it in the skillet and wash it out. Use a soft bristle brush to scrub any bits that need a little extra persuasion. Let me know how it turns out, ok!!??
About sticky cast iron I believe that's what happened to mine when someone used it. It's sticky and big globs of goey oil in the grooves. I tried everything I know but I havnt been able to get it fixed. Is there any ways to fix that?
I hate that it happened to you, but it can be fixed. Wash it really good but don’t add any more oil. Place it upside down in a 450 to a 500-degree oven and bake it for an hour to an hour and a half. Turn the oven off and let it cool down completely. Usually, overnight is fine. See if this helps, and let me know how it works out for you, ok!?
@@babalu-oc6iu May try this on mine. I haven’t used it in years because it’s got hard stuff on it that I couldn’t figure out how to get off. I wish they made a metal tool with groves that you could use. No idea why they don’t make one with a screwdriver type handle.
I have a pan like that but with deeper and slightly closer ridges, brand new at Christmas 2023. The packaging said it's pre-seasoned and ready to use. (Great!) So I made cheeseburgers on it and the residue became like black cement. I could NOT scratch it off, scrub it off, soak it off, nothing I tried was working. So I ended up setting it aside to deal with another day. Well.... that was 8 months ago. (OOPS!!) Now my brand new pan had severely rusted where the caked on food had been stuck and disintegrated over that time. So I'm just now working on the vinegar bath and scrub to get the rust off. Another channel said to put a baking soda paste on it if the vinegar bath is taking multiple days so it's currently got the paste on it. Once all the rust is gone I'll be able to start the re-seasoning process. And I will NEVER again trust that a pan is properly seasoned. I will always season it on my own at least once if not more before I use a pan. Not going through this nightmare again. I was brand new to cast iron cookware and didn't know any better at the time, but I sure do now!
@@return2basics242 Oh wow! I know that was frustrating. I'm glad you were able to get started cleaning it up so you can use it again. Thanks for sharing your story with us! If the paste doesn’t work, let me know, and I’ll try to help you figure something out to get it clean ok!?
I found that exact model in the trash so I’m gonna get rid of the rust with distilled vinegar and clean it with hot water and soap. Then I’ll add cooking oil right away after drying it with paper towels.
I let my clean skillet cool to room temperature before wiping of excess oil. The cooling helps suck microscopic amounts of the oil into the pores. Works for me, anyway….
I have the same pan without grooves. I tried to use yesterday. I have no idea what happened it has a horrid smell after. I made waygu I think that's how you spell it. It so Gross 🤢.
