- The G-43 is an improved G-41 in which the rather wonky and heavy gas system of the G-41 was replaced with a short-stroke piston that was nearly directly copied from the SVT-40.
In addition to modifying the gas system, they also added a 10 round detachable box magazine and a scope rail (for which a small number were fitted with the ZF-4 scope to serve as designated marksman rifles).
The G43 is so mechanically similar to the G41 that a large number of the parts are entirely interchangeable. Both rifles are chambered for the full power 7.92x57 8mm Mauser cartridge.
The mass produced American M1 Garand failed the InRange mud test miserably, only being able to fire 1 round. Did the German engineers do better in this regard? Let's find out!

Cleaning the G43 Video after the Mud Test?
The thing is, by the time you see a video, it has been several weeks or several months since they filmed it.
So unless they shot a cleanup video at the same time as they did the mud test, they would have to re-mud the G43.
I doubt Karl's going to pour mud all over that rifle twice, just in order to make a video of cleaning it, which is, as I understand it, a horrible job anyway. ;)

I definitely want to see an SVT-40 mud-tested too! I don't think it would do too well though, given how open the action is.
I'm starting to think tilting bolts work better in mud than rotating bolts. Have you seen how well the MAS 49/56 did?

There's lots of G43s in the US, this is a common model, and mud usually doesn't permanently damage a gun if its cleaned soon after.

@@jochenheiden Other than the gas system, the G43 shares almost nothing SVT. The SVT is tilting bolt, the G43 is flapper locked, their fire control groups are different, etc.
It might do okay, but there's that recess on the side of the SVT bolt where mud and gunk would probably get into the mechanism.
That hurt just watching. Karl, you deserve a reward for doing that to such a prize rifle.
An excellent follow up to these videos would be a video of the field striping of the weapon so that we can follow along as Karl and Ian find the places the mud went that prevented the weapon from operating (or in the case of weapons that passed where didn't the mud go and what prevented it from finding a spot that would make the weapon fail).
This got me thinking. fn-49 mud test.
I think they kind of did that. It was the one where Ian was rolling around in the mud with an M14.

Analysis of what caused the stoppage? Where was the offensive piece of gravel or whatever found?
There was probably mud on the feed ramp and in the chamber.
That's not a *real* G43. If you used a quality Russian G43 it would work better.

@@geronimo5537 geronimo if you type 'Sherman and churchill tank trials' you'll see 21 mins footage of Australian military trials of both tanks in mud conditions. Both have certain strengths.

i really want to see pictures of this gun when you pull it apart. closeups of where the uber mud got in and bricked the rifle would be both enlightening and terrifying.

If you can try to mudtest all the major rifles from every nation that would be cool like svt,arisaka,Enfield,mosin and some others im missing probably
They did the SMLE, Arisaka Type 38, K98k, Mosin, and M1 Garand as well as the SKS and M14
SMLE, M14 and M1 failed in one round, K98k kept running for a while before it succumbed when re-mudded, and the Arisaka kept running thanks to its dust cover. Mosin kept running, although Ian had to bash the bolt handle against the wheelbarrow to get it unlocked because once mudded no mortal palm strength was able to unlock it. SKS ran fine the first few rounds but after that the ejector was so mudded it FTE'd with every shot.
Conclusion: Don't get your weapon dirty in WW2 unless you're IJA and had the dust cover on your Arisaka

You know, I was reading in the book “Sturmgewehr!” back when it had just came out, and you were doing that big round of mud testing, that the German evaluators sent a quantity of guns to Greece for mud testing. I don’t recall what was the outcome, but it’s interesting that this was done. Odd that they sent the guns to Greece.
I sure don’t anticipate that series of rifles ever being mud tested by even you gentlemen, as intrepid a pair of evaluators as you are!
Is this the original over gassed system or a modern gas system that is adjustable? Not that I think it would change the results just curious, love this stuff guys!
Jochen Heiden as I said I don’t think it would either. Maybe it would be exposed for less time keeping debris from getting in comparatively, the locking system is so complicated it doesn’t take much at all to jam it, I was just curious more than anything.
