  • Matabeleland fought for the restoration of land from white settlers even though she had lost sovereignty in 1894. It was a wrong struggle in the 1960s and 1970s when the people of Matabeleland participated in a war to dislodge British settler colonial rule and to replace a white colonialist system with a black one. The war led to a settlement at the Lancaster House in the UK in December 1979. Even though the people participated whole heartedly, they have never tasted true freedom and self-rule since the overthrowal of the Ndebele state in 1893. This raises questions whether their efforts were wasted in a wrong struggle altogether. This lecture tackles the question, “Did Matabeleland fight the wrong struggle?”
