    If she tells you “no”, then either:
    1. She wants you to try harder. In which case, she’s being completely illogical by not telling you what she really wants. This will probably make for lots of problems in the future if she continues to refuse to tell you what she wants. Do not pursue her any further.
    2. She means “no”. Do not pursue her any further.

      Tipping is complicated and I agree it should be removed but I also agree with Ruthless Cardigan it should be used as a way to show someone who is working extra hard that we respect them working like that but another problem with that is on average waiters and waitresses will get tipped about the same weather or not they are actually doing a good job and Naithan Wiley unless they have agreed to share/give away tips that is illegal

    To give a little history lesson on why tipping exists.
    Back when cars were first invented I believe, restaurant owners were being very greedy and decided to take some of their employees pay. This caused tips to be a thing, as over time it is now a customary thing in the US. If you don't tip at least 10%, then you're looked at as a bad person. But the reason people rely on tips to survive is because of the horrible pay. All it takes is an increase in wages so people don't have to rely on being nice to someone in hopes of being blessed by some cash.

    I volunteered with Special Olympics five years in the summer and one winter games. I have never met a more loving, courageous and amazing group of people than those participants. Being a hugger, someone who accompanies an athlete from event to event, stand at the finish line and cheers their heart out and hugs the athlete when they finish has been some of my most fond memories. The only thing I couldn't handle was the crawlboard games where the athletes who could barely wiggle across the floor poured their hearts out to try (I'm crying remembering this right now. My parents, my dad a WW2 Marine Corps vet could only handle a short time) was too much for me.

    "Why can't they charge a bit more for the food and pay their waiters properly?" I wonder the same thing.

    • @poplo9094
      @poplo9094 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Some places do that and it's not always successful. In one state they made it the law to use a no tip policy and pay wait staff a standard wage; turns out the waiters (and businesses iirc) made less money overall so the policy was changed back. Furthermore, at least in my state, you can't actually be paid less than minimum wage (unless you meet one of a couple of conditions). If your standard pay + tips is less than you would have earned at minimum wage for the hours worked the business is legally obligated to pay the difference.
      Does this mean I agree with the practice? No, and the fact that the main reason behind the policy's enactment was repealed further suggests we have no reason to have kept it, but a societal change of that level is hard to enact, especially quickly. Also, given some of the other issues in the country, I personally think the time and resources could be better spent on something else.

    • @sianchild
      @sianchild 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@poplo9094 I like the way it works over here - staff already get paid at least minimum wage. You tip if you had particularly good service etc, meaning you don't automatically do it. It's more straightforward. Your way, there's a tension as to how much you pay.
      You also have VAT already added on the price of stuff so you don't have to sit doing calculations in a shop. You can walk in somewhere and know how much you're obligated to pay.

    • @poplo9094
      @poplo9094 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@sianchild Oh, I don't think the system we have is very good, just that unlike people always say it's not as if wait staff are entirely destitute. A friend of mine is a waitress and has made $300+ in a single night, other nights are just slower to balance that out. The only reason I know about the state that tried to get rid of tipping is because I had to write a proposal to start a business for a class and was looking into alternate pay models for servers and found that example. Ultimately, it seemed as if the best solution was if they were paid a more reasonable base rate, prices for meals were raised moderately to cover that increase, and the amount tipped was reduced, but finding a good mix is a lot more effort than business owners tend to put in when they can pay as little as $2.50 an hour and leave the rest to customers to reduce their costs, especially in a business as risky as restaurants.
      Realistically, blame the government. Tipping wait staff is only a practice as restaurant owners had to cut costs significantly during the US prohibition (sale of alcohol was illegal, which is a huge profit margin for restaurants) or they'd have gone out of business quickly. As such, owner's lobbied the government to institute these policies. However, once prohibition was repealed, they then lobbied to keep the low pay rates, because why pay your workers yourself if you can get customers to cover it?
      Like I said, I don't think it's a good policy nor did it come about through good intentions, just that wait staff aren't necessarily as bad off as the low base pay makes it seem. Of course, reliance on customers to be able to afford food is a bad situation, and when a restaurant is doing poorly the wait staff suffer quite heavily in comparison to the rest (barring perhaps the owner). This is also why Americans find it disgusting when someone such as a celebrity (obviously American ones) gives out a small tip or even no tip. As they should know American culture they should also know why tipping is done, so to ignore that when people who work standard jobs for miniscule amounts (in comparison) are willing to pay tips, regardless of how you agree with the policy, is considered in very poor taste. As Americans we should also be aware that travellers may not know tipping policy/ why we consider it important and give some benefit of the doubt as it is understandable for them to be unaware.

    • @jenniferpearce1052
      @jenniferpearce1052 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@sianchild The difference is that sales tax (which is like VAT) varies by state, and by county. It's also not allowed on some items (food) and higher on others (gasoline, cigarettes). So if a manufacturer sets a price (like the cover price on a book), they're not going to print something different on each county's shipment.
      So why are all our taxes different? We're a huge country with diverse needs and people. New Englanders pay for more salting of the roads in winter than Floridians. So they need more tax money to cover it. But maybe Florida wants social services for retirees, so they tax for that. Each area and group of people vote for their needs and values.
      Besides, it helps kids learn to do percentages in their heads trying to figure out what they can buy with their allowance!

    • @sianchild
      @sianchild 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jenniferpearce1052 that doesn't really answer why you can't pay staff a decent minimum wage. It's also possible to keep VAT the same everywhere and still have different areas receive different amounts of money or spend it on different things.

    In Virginia, where I live, they asked waitresses if they would prefer to have a standard wage and they said HELL NO!!
    They get paid probably $2-$3 an hour plus Tips. Generally, tipping for regular standard service is 15%. I always tip 20% unless you are horrendously bad then I go down to 15%. In a really nice restaurant with 2 people and $75 bill. I’ll give you $15 tip for 1 hr meal. Add that times 3 tables/hr and you’ve made $45!! You walk out with $200-$300 a night in CASH!
    PLUS... servers generally do NOT claim but 1/3 of tips on TAXES. So no...MOST do not want $10 hour for that job. $10 x 8 hrs = $80 ( or $15 hr= $120) and taxes take 1/3 or $25 of that. 8 hrs for $55? Or $80??
    HELL NO.

    I don't know if people already said this, but from what I remember from school, tipping at restaurants first became a big thing during the Great Depression. Restaurants had to pay their waiters and waitresses less because of the depression, so customers began tipping in order to help make up for the waiters/waitresses decrease in money. After the Great Depression, restaurants realized, "Hey! People have gotten so used to tipping, that I can continue paying them less money, and the customers will just handle it for me!"

    Originally we didn't tip in America, but then prohibition happened and people didn't really go to restaurants as often as they used to because of a lack of alcohol so tipping became a norm. That and most of the pay a wait staff member makes is from tipping since they make minimum wage . . . if you worked in the 80's. Which is like $3 per hour.

My mom said it wasn't a problem and she gave him the extra money, but I would have been pretty terrified!

    3:15, to answer your question. The tipping system is dumb all around. People like waiters and waitresses can be paid under minimum wage because "they should make enough money off of tips". The thing is that tips aren't mandatory, so if the person just gets a bunch of rude customers, they will just get paid their below minimum wage salary.
