Jess did a wonderful job. She didn't panic, and she did everything she knew how to do. And yes, she probably learned it from watching your videos. I have. I've been passing along to my friends that have sheep & goats, the things I've learned. Now when they have a baby that's not doing so well, they take it's temp first. (BTW 37C is amazingly 98.6F.) They never had done that before. The other day, she took a chilly lamb and put it in a small plastic bag, and put it in a pail of warm water, to help warm it up. They never had done that before. They are incorporating a number of the things I've learned from watching your videos. You are a great teacher. I understand that you don't know everything, but what you do know is invaluable.
Thank you for taking the time to try and save these tiny lives, and passing your knowledge onto us. God bless you! Big hug from Oklahoma.

When I was working with wildlife we had issues with the first thermometers that I ordered because we couldn’t read low temperatures on hypothermic animals (they read ‘Lo’ just like yours). It might be worth getting a thermometer that goes lower, to help you get more useful data on how cold a lamb is. It was a game changer for us to know exactly how cold an animal was and track how quickly it was warming.

As I was sitting here crocheting this evening, I was thinking about how Jess had learned enough from watching you care for lambs, that she could care for the little high risk baby.
My younger daughter has been my mini-me. When she was young, we had housebunnies. I learned a great deal about bunny care from a lot of my non-vet friends. Bunnies are considered exotic animals and most vets are NOT trained to treat bunnies.
My daughter absorbed an enormous amount of information in the bunny care department just from watching me. In kindergarten, she proclaimed that she wanted to be "a housepet vet." She never went that route, however, her grad degree was in Integrated Biology and she had her own bunny in undergrad years. Leopold got a girlfriend in grad school. She worked with zebra finches as her research, and several times she got calls from classmates about sightings of domestic bunnies in places where they shouldn't be (abandoned). She'd grab a banana and a small dog cage and head out to captured the bunny, find a home for said bunny and carry on.
I was basically gobsmacked every time she'd rehome an abandoned bunny! Learned behavior! Her friends couldn't believe how she just knew how to handle these buns.
Jess has a great deal of respect for her mama!
You have been and are a great role model for her. Treasure that. You've done a great job Mom💖

    • @barbarahouk1983
      @barbarahouk1983 ปีที่แล้ว +9

I second Crystal regarding blessings upon your farm. I also wish you and your livestock good health.
I grew up in the farming community of NE Ohio/NW Pennsylvania. I don't have coordination enough to be a farmer. I never lost respect for the farming community. I became a psychiatrist (MD). My goal was to keep people functional. I really like division of labor. I knew from a young age I could not do what my elders did. I studied long and hard to be able to contribute. I did make a difference. Now I am retired due to serious illness. I really enjoy Sandi's efforts and her community.
Jess did everything she knew and did it well. No one can know everything. RIP little lamb.
From my earliest memories, I knew not every egg hatches; not every calf lives and accidents happen. Oh how I appreciated the advances in medicine. Humans used to have 10 children to have 3-5 survive. I was common for women to die in childbirth. Many men had second wives (some a third) who raised the children. There are far more step mother stories than step father stories. Some Native American tribes didn't have permanent names for a child until a certain age because so many died prior to that age. On the animal side, still born is real too.
Sandi's videos show real farm life not sugar coated but with kindness and empathy. It is a kinder world although it is closer to the pain & frustration Nature can throw at us. I have much more difficulties with the EVIL PEOPLE who create a cold nasty world and do everything to break Natural Law.
This Christmas season I wish all of Sandi's community the good will I find on this channel to be spread by every one. I hope the New Year brings you all health and many moments of happiness. My Sandi and her family be able to have yet another profitable (money, health & happiness) year in 2023.

I'm a laboratory technologist in BC and one of my coworkers is a cattle rancher. Thanks to your videos I can have really sincere conversations with her about how hard raising cattle must be. I was mentioning your thoughts on vets sending different brands of the same vaccine and she said "I KNOW! They did that to me and the dosage was different between the two so I messed up!"
She takes it so seriously, just like you. She takes every loss very personally and is constantly looking for answers when all her efforts don't have the best results.
Thank you for sharing your knowledge so that I can connect with her on a more personal level!

I think that everytime Jess feels homesick, she watches your clips, hence why she knew what to do with the lambs (she may not admit it though) or just wants to see what is going on at home. She knew to dip the baby's navals, give colostrum as well as check mama for milk (even though she has been around you for many lambings, its only recently that you started dipping) as well as how to save a hypothermic lamb.

Hey sandy! Baby human nurse here ☺️ I love that you can provide dextrose to those little lambs! Just make sure to use sterile water or saline to mix with the dextrose and not tap water. You’re injecting into a sterile place and they will get an abdominal infection if dirty water is introduced to it. Thanks for all you do for those lambs!😁

Even her daughter Jess did her very best. Sandi taught Jess well. (Jeff is knowledgeable as well). IMO, Mark and Sandi are successful parents from what I observed by the many videos that Sandi produced.
I appreciated Jess doing everything she knew for that little lamb. Yes, if Sandi had been there the % chance of survival, because of the knowledge base Sandi has, would have been a bit higher. However, no guarantee the little lamb would have survived. I think Jess did the best she could with the knowledge she had and no one can ask for more.

Nurse here. Please do not put a used needle back into the bottle of medication or dextrose solution. The used needle introduces bacteria from the animal into the bottle and the bacteria will contaminate and multiply in the bottle. Bacteria especially like sugar and will multiply even more. Use one needle to draw up the medication and put on a new needle for injecting into the animal if you are going to draw up more than once from the bottle. You will have to throw out that bottle of dextrose now.❤I love watching your videos. Thank you for making them for us! Merry Christmas!❤🇨🇦🤶🏻🐑🎄

Jess it’s a blessing to see you home for the holidays. Jumping in and helping mom was a great help it’s not easy when you have a new born with problems you did what you could and that’s what counts. I shed tears when I realized that baby didn’t make it but it’s out of pain and suffering. Sandi you have a wonderful daughter that is very special ❤. Your family is always so supportive of you with all you do to keep going it very tough this time of year for lambing . Love you all ❤

Please stop yelling at Sandi. She loves these little beings and gives them a good life while they are under her care. She doesn't like the loss of any lamb or Ewes. She goes above and beyond to save them. We have seen it time and time again where she is up feeding babies. I love you share with us Sandi. I hope someday to have a little sheep group. You teach us so much. Thank you!

Sandi I have shared before my father in law was a hobby sheep farmer. We now own the family farm but don’t raise animals. My FIL name was Howard, was a sucker for a sad story. A family had fallen in love with a bottle lamb and raised to to a few grown Ewe. She thought she was part of the family and even slept on their porch. Well these people ask my FIL if he would take their pet. Of course, he did. That’s how we got “Friendly” the sheep. She was nothing more than a big old puppy dog that would follow my father in law every where. We would just be getting ready to lamb here if we still had sheep! Merry Christmas Sandi and Family!

I do wish you would get some WOOL things for your nursery - a wool lammie jammie and a couple of wool blankets . You can probably get the blankets at least from a thrift store. There is a HUGE difference in how fast they work and the job they do compared to anything synthetic (like fleece) but the amazing thing is that wool like all natural fiber will regulate temperature so it gets warm quickly and retains the temp and is never too hot . And just make it a practice of putting it on as soon as it is out of the warm bath . Or get someone to make a wool jammie from your own wool yarn. I don't know if your little room is heated but maybe a little oil filled radiator type plug in heater to warm things up on would also help when the temps plummet . Love all you do Sandi (et al) but you have a wonderful resource -- wool - - and there is so much benefit to it so should be put to use for the lambies too. See Campaign for wool for more info on the benefits of wool.

YAY!!! NEW VIDEO and I'm online as it launches!!!!
Lambing is always exciting, but in all honesty, it has to be the monotonous things that I REALLY enjoy watching!!! The cleaning of pens, the feeding, the rearranging of ewes, gathering and stacking of hay... it's just all so enjoyable. I think I would LOVE that lifestyle of farming. When our class would go on fieldtrips to a farm, I was always so excited. Now my excitement lives on DAILY as I can watch your videos at my leisure!!! THANK YOU Sandi!!!
