- いいですよ is a phrase very commonly used in everyday conversations. But it seems like many Japanese learners don't get it right. Some of them use it with wrong tone, some of them use it in the wrong way that could cause misunderstanding. In this video, I will explain the two types of いいですよ with many examples so that you know clearly how you should use it.

Quiz answer:
いいですよ in falling tone is used to say "no need for it". This phrase is often used when someone offers a help. But in the dialogue, いいですよ was used when one had an urgent business to do. For Tanaka, paying the water bill was his own business, he was not offering help. In this situation, the other person saying いいですよ which means "no need for it" was clearly not appropriate. Tanaka might have thought "who are you to tell me there is no need for it."

how about a video about 確かに、別に? i really dont get the meaning of it
thank you!!
how to say i receive a call earlier in japanese?
Should he have replied "hai, wakarimasu" instead ??
2:54 "Anyway, that's not important." 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Uh…yeah it kinda is! 😂
I freaking DIED at that part lol 😂
Not important? Its number 1 and 2 most important thing to me!
Its like the difference between „sure, alright“ and „ahh it‘s alright“
What's really great about Kaname is that I understand everything he's saying, but then somehow when I'm reading Japanese literature i barely understand anything
Because english subtitles
You are probably reading the English subtitles. 😂
I'll assume you know the characters and say it's probably more that he prefaces everything he says with context on the key phrases beforehand, and talks with somewhat exaggerated inflection for educational purposes.
@@MAYOFORCEalso he's speaking rather than it being in text like the kind that op struggles with, theres a lot of vocal information that doesn't show up in text at all so there's less info to work with
In any language, conversation and literature are often separate matter. Understanding one doesn't mean you get the other.
It only took the first 40 seconds of the video to understand the difference. I just enjoyed the dialogue that comes after.
I like how good Kaname's videos are at introducing cases of "this sounds unnatural" or "what about this situation?", but also how every example manages to work in multiple uses of whatever phrase he's teaching. Good stuff
7:28 Kaname showing a wide range of acting skills :D
he's too good!
he said it is not important at 2:59 but to me, I learnt something very important
Glad to see kaname's natural acting
Your videos are a constant reminder of how lifeless I must sound when I speak Japanese. I'm sure it's helpful to consider the way I should be speaking. Thanks for another great video.
Funny, I get the "your Japanese sounds odd" response sometimes for a similar reason.
Kaname 先生, I really like the fact that you put a quiz at the end. It would be cool if you keep doing that! ありがとうございます!
Kaname is goated with the sauce
I'm laughing at the part where Kaname sensei makes cringe expression toward the load of things that they requested. 😂
これを少し知っていたのに、例文が練習にとても便利です。
These are the clearest explainations I've found for things I commonly come across or wonder about living here in Japan.
I came knowing the difference, but your examples of edge cases, alternatives and incorrect usage are very helpful to shore up my intuitive understanding concretely.
Can you do a video about the different uses of だろう/でしょう?
thank you for teaching me about pee and poo on this beautiful day
ありがとうございます先生🥰 Your videos are always so helpful.
that souvenir scene is something i would do xd
Wasn't expecting to learn how to say "pee" and "poo" in this video too.
The moment I heard the guy say that I was like "do you *not* want me to go??" It sounded like he was trying to say "give it up already"
Let's go, a new Kaname video!!

I never complete a Kaname video w questions, he explains well ❤
The ”いいですよ” in the quiz sounds kind of like 'what are you fussing about?' or "Stop fussing around, you idiot."
I know an amateur artist from Japan, and we communicate mainly through comments we make on each others' art on discord, usually very basic things like "かわいいね!". Do you have a video on some basic ettiquette for communicating online? Sometimes, they talk about how they have low self esteem, or I want to give them basic art advice, but I always get super nervous and feel like my inflection won't go through properly.
Look at Kaname's videos on casual speech and take note of truncated alternative usage he gives in videos like this one. For example いいよー, vs いいですよ。Of course be *extra* aware that ambiguous speech (like casual speech often is) becomes even more difficult to determine online, so always indicate whether your statement is positive or negative through other words or indications. This is why emoji took off so hard in Japan in the first place.
@@orbatos Thanks, I generally don't use emoji at all but I'll start using that more when I message in Japanese. Otherwise it sounds like I just gotta take it one little phrase at a time like I've been doing.
@@MAYOFORCE You don't need to use emoji specifically, what you need to convey is *context*. You can do this easily by putting just a bit more care into word choice and erring on the side of verbosity.
Consider the example in this video of a common error semi-fluent foreigners make, accepting a favour with いいですよcomes across as condescending because it's the the equivalent of saying "yes, you may help me" when someone offers to do you a favour. This error is easily avoided by using simply being explicit (はい、いいね), or/and colloquial phrases (いいよー). Does this make sense?
@@orbatos Yeah, thank you. Sometimes I feel I struggle to get my feelings across in English, let alone a language I hadn't been raised with.
@@MAYOFORCE I assume they know you're not japanese, so even if you do mess up on accident it'll be fine if you clarify if you notice a misunderstanding. Don't stress to much about it, it's normal to happen. Give it your best shot, but remember that mistakes are normal (and often necessary) for improvement :)
Kaname San you are simply GREAT!!!
Interesting video
Is it possible to make a video about とりあえず in the future ? I still struggle with this word…
Another great video! Really love how you review these short phrases that can get tricky at times
Also interestingly, in Indonesian pee is also euphemistically called the "small business" and poo as the "big business" like in Japanese
Kaname sensei, do you plan on creating lesson about て、だって、と言いた something like that? It's when referring to someone has said. I'm sure that's one that confuses japanese learners.
Hey Kanameさん I had a question, is the -んで at ~2:18 (私奢るんで)short for んです, or does it function differently? Love your videos by the way, really helpful
8:12 sometimes I like to add a extra ね? at the end to mess with them. Like, are you sure?
ラーメン食べに行きませんか?
はい、いいですよね?
えー?
🤣🤣🤣
Your videos help me understand a lot. So easy and straight to the point. Thank you so much! 😄 🙏
God, you are in INVALUABLE resource!!!! Always grateful!!
2:50 Japanese people must laugh whenever they go to London and see “Big Ben”
The answer to the quiz question is いいですよ = "Yeah, You go do that" that's why Tanaka was mad because he thought it was an insult
語調語が必要だとは知らなかった。ありがとうございます。
kaname is trying to explain the japanese "yea nah yea"
Could you do a video on さあ? Sometimes I see it used sortof like はい, is this normal or colloquial or is there some other shade of meaning here?
I really love your videos. The complex examples and the practical view on the language is awesome.
”Alright”と”It's Alright"の違いみたいですね
ありがとうございますかなめ先生
Anime taught me also "いいよ、いいよ!" to express enthusiasm for an idea. lol
Can you make a video about the te-form + iku/kuru or similar constructions (if you haven't already)?
Great video! Can you teach about Japanese ordinal numbers next?
For the "politely refusing an offer" i.e. "you don't have to" usage, I've heard that along with いいです and 大丈夫です, you can also say 結構です. Is this correct, does it have the same meaning / nuance?
Not a fluent speaker so I can't really talk about the nuance, but I think けっこう is correct here but more formal than 大丈夫 or いい
thanks for the good lesson naito-sama 🙇
なるほど👍
The falling tone いいですよ。
かなめ先生は日本語の勉強するのてつだってくれますか。そうねがっています。この動画は好きです。😊
- Fine.
- I'm fine, thanks.
Thanks, sensei
"It's all good" vs "Sounds Good."
Seems like asking someone whether something is bothering them, and getting back "I'm fine."
Your life may depend on correctly reading that air.
Hi Kaname-sensei
how about a video about 確かに、別に? i really dont get the meaning of it
So you said that a casual version of いいですよ would be いいよ. What about いいだよ or would that have a different meaning entirely?
いい is an い - adjective, so you can't put だ after it.
The polite form of い - adjectives is the adjective + です and the casual form is simply the adjective without です.
The polite form of な - adjectives is the adjective + です and the casual form is the adjective + だ.
@@pawelowi7528 ah ok I understand. Thanks!
Hm, I guess the guy got annoyed cuz the other guy seemed unhappy/dissatisfied for letting him go out to pay the bill, but had to do so, and kinda demonstrated he's annoyed by using a falling intonation.
The request is about a mandatory bill so the other guy shouldn't be unhappy to let him go, but rather more comprehensive about the reason in the first place.
Sounds like “Sure!” Vs “I am good”
Do a video on ぜ and ぞ please!
“Kuma no hakusei” 😂😂😂
Next level stuff I guess
Quiz answer, is it because it sounds like the other person is giving Tanaka permission to go pay the bill?
"Nah, yeah," vs "Yeah, nah."
it's considered rude in Japan to poop not outside - GOT IT!
i think of it like, 'it's good' or 'i'm good'
the last いいですよ sounds more like ダメですよ!
It’s the same in English. How do I LINE it?
It’s same as 大丈夫ですよ
the guy said naw go shit outside? lmao
2:38 That's funny. In French we call them the small commission and the big commission.
Anyway that's not important.
Ah oui c'est vrai 😂
7:29 この顔は滑稽ですねー (カナメ先生を怒らせるつもりはありません)
ピアノはどこですか。
How come YES and NO is the same word!!
That's Japan for you...😅
7:28 XD
4:33 why the sub is missing the を
First comment :3
❤🎉🎉
What? Your friend would refuse to let you use his toilet if it's for the big one???? Btw who is precising first if it's for the small or big one??? This is science fiction !!!!!
But what if my name is Araragi Koyomi and I'm brushing my lil sister Karen's teeth and she says "にいひゃん・・・いいよ" ????????????
