I have great luck with zebrune red shallots. Zone 5b south shore of lake superior. I start seeds in potting mix in February, in my basement under grow lamps . I use dry wall mud trays with drilled holes in the bottom (plastic ones or stainless steel ). I moisten soil (not wet) Seed sowing on the surface sow or covered lightly with soil . Then spritz with water bottle. Cover with plastic wrap. Lower the light about 2 inches above the trays. Please don’t let dry out. 10 days to two weeks for germination. After germination remove plastic wrap. When they have to about6-8 inches give them a haircut take about two inches off. May have to get another time before planting outdoors. Plant like onions 6 inches apart in rows about afoot apart. Just thought I would share. Thanks for all your hard work Luke !! Love your channel. Dean

Yay! Thank you for this! I grew shallots from seed this year and had some to plant! I found out that I'm able to tolerate shallots waay better than onion, so I wanted to grow a bunch more next year. Planted it 15 of my sets and I'll also plant more seed in the spring!

So funny. I was just looking to see if you did a shallot video this morning. There was a really old one and I was getting into the garden in the morning and just went with it. Thank you for the update and I will be pulling a few out and spacing them wider apart. Thank you again for the video it is really perfect timing😊

I got some from a seed collectors' garden. She died about 2 years ago and nobody was taking care of it. Her husband decided to turn it into a community garden next the the house he rents out. There were a bunch of shallots just lying on top of the ground or most of them needed to be thinned out so I got some. I'm not sure what kind they are exactly but they seem to be clustered. I didn't know what they were at first because they blended in with the weeds. I got them thinned out and replanted in her garden and I have a 4x8 raised bed at my house full of them. They taste so good I ate a few.

I followed advice for the last couple of years to plant shallot sets in Spring not Autumn (as I do with most of my garlic). Have had good returns on the crops with none of them going to seed so far. Some of the garlic I've planted in early Spring before didn't vernalise properly and gave me back a giant bulb but not the shallots.
Now I've heard you say this I'll plant them now rather than waiting, but based on my results they seem to be a lot more forgiving than garlic.

Hey Luke, so if it snows during winter, should I hold off on watering? We typically will get snow here but it melts during day. And we do not get a lot of snow. I've never bothered to touch any of my other plants over winter like my asparagus, strawberries, blueberries and thyme. And they come back just fine. I just mulch them as they go dormant.

Luke, can shallots be planted in late fall in zone 3? The temperature drops to between -40 and -50 degrees Celsius during January February. Most plants freeze solid & die in this zone over the winter.

Wonder if I should replant it and see what happens as they do want to grow again.🧐

Is there any difference between the shallots you get in Europe vs the states. See the ones I get in Sweden (usually from the Netherlands, Spain or France) we plant in the spring and still get a set of 4-10 onions depending on type. Makes me want to try to plop some down now but when I've done that before they run and flowered, still haven't tried in years.

All onions will flower in second year. Mine from seed did not and got huge. Zebrune shallots. Never tried replanting, but will now as I just found a couple and they grew up out of the ground and want to regrow again. We are finally getting colder weather so will try it.
