  • Mike McDowell, our in-house binocular expert and collector, sits down with Jimmy and Mark to discuss the topic of binoculars. What are they, how do they work, what are the tradeoffs as you move between configurations, which one is the right one for any given user and how can you even tell the difference between different models at different price points? We also get the chance to pick his brain about the new Razor UHD’s and their comparison to the current Razor HD’s, as well as the newly upgraded Crossfire HD’s and Diamondback HD binoculars. If you ever have any questions about binoculars, give us a call and ask for Mike! He’s one of our fantastic technical support staff who has been with the company for the last 30 years and is a wealth of optical knowledge.
    As always - let us know if there are any topics you'd like covered on the Vortex Nation podcast by asking us on any one of our social media platforms and using #VortexNationPodcast.

    I was in the Vortex showroom the other day looking at other stuff, and got it into my head to look at binos for a to-be-determined antelope hunt and to replace the pair I have at home. Ended up spending a half hour with Mike going over a lot of this material and having him pass me different pairs to try out. This guy is not only knowledgeable but he's also incredibly helpful and he knows how to pair binoculars to the activity. I have to do some more homework on what my needs are, but I'll be buying from these guys. If you're within 2 hours of Madison WI, it's worth stopping in and trying out the optics.

    Thank you for your honesty in describing HD as a marketing tool and not a clear criteria for binocular selection.

    I used to ask Mike far too many questions when I was getting started selling optics 20 years ago but having an expert just a phone call away was too tempting for my younger self.

    Some great information on here, wish I had listened to this 2 years ago. Completely agree what he says about using 8X binoculars over 10X. I bought the ViperHD's in 10x42 two years ago, the glass was good but I wasn't thrilled with their performance in the Minnesota woods for low light and stability. I bought the 8x42 Vipers last year and was amazed at how much better I liked them for my uses. Mike McDowell is a smart dude, should have called him first.

    Very impressed with your in-depth, well researched information on this topic. Yours is by far the longest /most detailed, yet it took 3 searches and tries for yours to get in suggestion line up ! Thank you 🙏🏼! Embarrassing how illiterate I am on binoculars..

    Man I really enjoy looking through the Viper HD 10X50. I compared many different brands and models and nothing could beat the value offered by the viper linup. The brightness is a big deal when shooting 3D archery. Shadows and dark target are no problem now.

    Nice podcast, I enjoyed listening to Mike. I think people have a tendency for too much magnification, both in binos and especially rifle scopes. I'd almost recommend 8x to most hunters over 10x. I own and use a lot of glass and enjoy all the differences. I've enjoyed your original Razor HD 8x42's. I'd love to look through the new UHD's and wonder how they compare to my Noctivid.

    I wish they would put a MOA scale in the fury line,, I use moa for sizing something all the time I find it cumbersome to dig out the rifle to use the moa scale in the scope to figure sizes

    Got a chance to test out the razors both hd and uhd love the weight of the standard razor and prefer it over the entrylevel trinovid hd by leica as far as sharpness and resolution but the uhd is absolutly amazing quite a bit brighter more colorful and refined my take is unless you realy want top of the line swaro nl pures this is the way to go I actualy prefer the uhd over the nl pure becouse the field flatenars on the swaros make me dizzy quick especialy at high magnification

    Wow, a very well made podcast on here. This man knows his glass and explains it very well. Thank you for this info
    I'm a happy owner of the Vortex Viper line. I run it on my 270 (Viper HST's) as well as a pair of 15x50's (Viper HD) and a set of 8x42's (Viper HD). And hunt in the open country for muleys and cous in AZ.

    What's the total light transmission difference between the 18x56 Kaibab's and the Razer UHD 18x56? I'm guessing kaibab's have high 80's and UHD Razer are low 90's.

    • @VortexNation
      @VortexNation  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Sorry for the delay! You can't really put numbers to light transmission unfortunately. Lots of people try, but there is no standard for the measurement at all. There are essentially an unlimited amount of visible wavelengths of light out there and each wavelength will have a different percentage of transmission through an optical system. Depending on which you choose to measure or if you do an average, you could get a whole host of different numbers so it's really not a reliable way to analyze light transmission. That said, the UHD's are significantly better than the Kaibab HD's. It's hard to explain without seeing them in person, but it's truly very impressive!!

    I see no one has answered your question regarding the “podcasts in the air.” I’ll answer that for you. So, podcasts and YT videos and anything else on the Internet aren’t floating in the air similar to radio frequencies. The podcasts are actually sitting on servers or server space owned or rented by the company who provides the application used to listen to them. If they are “in the Cloud” that really only means they are sitting on servers that are in a data center and connected creating a massive amount of space and being leased or rented to companies (think Amazon Web Services). Same for TH-cam videos, they are all stored on massive drives in servers that are interconnected in a data center. It’s basically like your home computers hard drive but larger and interconnected. When you or anyone else opens the application you are using to listen to podcasts or watch TH-cam videos, your device is assigned an IP address unique to you and it connects to your router on your home WiFi or to a cell tower then the cell companies router on cell data. The router knows what your IP address is and then uses its own IP address that is unique to the router (usually a home internet provider provides one of these WAN addresses per home or account) and sends a request to the podcast company’s known IP address (because every internet web address actually translates to an IP address using a service called DNS) and the podcast company takes the request and sends it internally to their stored podcasts on their own owned or rented drives and basically uploads it (data centers have very fast upload speeds) to its own router using a unique IP address for the server storing the podcast and then uses the podcast company’s own router and it’s own unique IP address to send it over the Internet (which is just a collection of routers) back to your home router for home WiFi or back to your cell services router. Then your home WiFi router knows that your device requested the podcast and it sends it over WiFi to the unique IP address for your device or your cell service router knows your device requested the podcast so it sends it to your devices unique IP address on its network. And voila, you are listening to a podcast. So for every connection you have on your device to the Internet you have a different unique IP address assigned to your device by the connection’s router which is a service called DHCP. Cell towers are basically routers so it transmits over several towers then to the closest one to your device then to you. And the Internet has many routers to transmit those send and receive requests between routers. The send and receive requests usually take the quickest path available and this all should happen in microseconds. Usually the bottleneck is going to be your home Internet connection or your cell service connection because you are usually on WiFi at home and sending and receiving will always be slower over the air and because running super fast cables to your home for Internet is super expensive and your cell service is obviously transmitting over towers and then to your device over the air. Most of the Internet and even from your home router to your Internet provider is hard wired and hard wired is always faster than over wireless connections. Even the Internet own routers and the storage within data centers and the servers inside are all interconnected via hard wire.
    Hope this helps 😊

      Forgot one thing. So, the only thing floating around in the air is your home WiFi’s router broadcasting that it’s available for connecting like “hey I’m here and this is my name, if you know the password you can connect” to anyone within range and the cell phone companies cell service towers are broadcasting basically the same thing but instead of having a password you need an active SIM in your phone to connect to the tower.

    The guy with the beard and lighter hair color, Jim was it? He looked really two-faced in this video.. when the camera 📷 was off of his face, and got a side angle onto him he looked really miserable to be there!! But when it was on his face, the camera 📷?!! Then, when it was on him.. he looked engaged in the conversation. Boy, I'll tell you somethin' none want to do there JOBS IN TODAY'S WORLD!!

      @VortexNation  4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Hi John - Jimmy here. That's me on the podcast and in the video! I appreciate the feedback - when others are speaking and I'm trying to be a good host and also keep the conversation going, it takes a pretty great deal of concentration and consequently I don't really pay attention to how my face looks or what I'm doing on camera. Will keep that in mind in the future.

    • @JL76OH
      @JL76OH 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Wow. I listen to and watch Jimmy’s podcasts often. No one who “hates” their job gets into the details as good as this guy. He’s a passionate student of the game and knows quite a bit. I’m a lot like him in the sense that when others are talking, I listen intently so I can learn from them and also offer some insightful response or info to the conversation once they’re done speaking. All the while my expressions are one of focus and intensity, not a fake camera smile. You’re comment was something I would expect a woman watching a daytime talk show to say. Someone should pull your man card for making statements like that bud.
