- This is probably the most well-known excerpt from the most-watched Cantonese Opera in the world. I have supplied English subtitles here, hoping that those who are not familiar with this language can enjoy it too.
I have uploaded another version before, performed by the students of these two actresses.
帝女花 is a Cantonese Opera first made into a movie in 1959, starring Opera singers, Yam Kim Fei (任剑辉) and Bak Suit Sin (白雪仙), both ladies, but Yam impersonated a man in all her movies.
The Emperor of the Ming dynasty had just approved of his future son-in-law who won the heart of his daughter with poetry. At that moment, The Ching army attacked and took over the palace. The Emperor committed suicide with his family but Princess Cheung Ping survived. To win the favour of his subjects, the new Emperor of the Ching dynasty adopted the Princess and proceeded with the grand wedding. To show their loyalty to the Ming emperor, the newly-weds take their own lives on their wedding night. The Cantonese Opera is too beautiful to be translated. Something will be "lost in translation." The Song here, 香夭 (Fragrant Sacrifice) is the grand finale of the opera, sung on the wedding night, the couple are dressed in exquisite finery. The Princess and her groom express their love for each other and their loyalty to the former dynasty, especially the late Emperor, before they take their own lives, drinking wine poisoned with Arsenic.

My grandmother in China loves to listen to these. As I am typing this out my mom is singing to it as she remember how many times she has listened to it in her old home.

(When I was just a toddler, our whole family must have gone for it together as it was a custom to go as a family but I was too young to remember. As my elder siblings grew up, they gradually stopped coming along.) Those days, movies that were popular would return to the screens after one or two years, like "The Sound Of Music," "Gone With the Wind" and so on. My mom has passed on but this movie is still popular and I'm glad people all over the world enjoy this excerpt.

She could express emotions in a tender speaking voice that men could not. By far she was the most popular leading man in a way that men and women could not be. Yes, you are right. She does have a beautiful voice. When my mom told me she was a lady and only plays the part of men in Opera, I found it hard to believe. Lately I've seen her playing female roles in old black and white Cantonese movies. I'm not an expert in Cantonese Opera either. We don't have to be to enjoy some of them. From my childhood days, as I listened and watched the movie, the English translation would occur to me and go round and round in my thoughts. When I started using TH-cam soon after it started, I decided to translate and upload the excerpt. It was quite a lot of work and I learnt editing the video by trial and error, so it took quite some time.
The best of the best. No one can compare with them, especially those called themselves '閨秀'。They don't know how to sing at all, but 互相吹捧！

I remember finding the full opera on youtube. it was one of the last old chinese operas that i found for my grandpa and grandma to watch before he passed away.
I'm glad you found that. I have found and downloaded the stage performance by these two actresses' disciples. I'm sure you are aware that the male lead and heroine are both played by ladies. So are the two leading couple in the stage performance. BTW, the stage performance like the original vinyl recordings are about four hours long.Thank you for sharing your experience.

Yes, Yam Kim Fai (Ren Jianhui) is awesome. She had made many successful Cantonese Opera movies with other opera-singer-actresses as well, notably Fong Yim Fun (Fang Yanfen)

Although I am no expert in Cantonese or Cantonese Opera, something about this just speaks to me and resonates with me. I especially like these lines poetic lines: 唉惜花者甘殉葬 (because it sounds like this is the moment where she realises her learned husband to be is willing to sacrifice his life) and 合欢与君醉梦乡 (because it is tragically romantic).
Thank you. I'm glad you enjoy it. It was so much a part of my life. The movie is my age. Those days, before home movie players were invented, good movies were screened again after a couple of years. So throughout my growing years, I accompanied my mother to the movie theatres to watch this film. My mother is not around anymore but she lives on in my heart.

I remember reading about this in The Search for Modern China, and I recall Mr. Spence writing that the officials witnessing this play, the senior officials that were alive during the Ming resistance would cover their faces with their sleeves to hide themselves showing emotion. I can see why.

Thanks for your thoughts. Sorry for the late reply. I've been away from TH-cam for a long time. This movie was made when I was born. Those days, popular movies return to the screen every one or two years. I watched a few times with my mom as I grew up. The recording could be heard everywhere we went from shops to homes and it was on the radio often.

Thank you for your comment. These operas were meant to be musicals performed on stage and have been adapted for the big screen. There are some differences in that years ago, mics were placed on stage, not worn by the performers and the sets and props differ too, so as the acting. This first link brings you to a live performance done several years ago by disciples of the original performers, Yam and Bak. It is a 3hour 45 min show. This is the closest to seeing one in person.

They are icons of Hong Kong culture and tradition. In a video of a performance of theirs for charity, they were not wearing their costumes but just normal formal wear. Yam was holding the script and wearing reading glasses. Bak was standing next to her, not even looking at the script or the audience. At that moment, her voice, her expressions, her body language was astonishing. It was as if she had transformed herself into Princess Cheung Ping. You do not see or hear her but the princess, instead.

Thank you so much. I've loved watching this as a child, so fascinated with the beauty of the actors, sets & costumes but I've never really understood why they died until now. Do sad. I still belive that the 2 roses are actually them! Thanks again!
