I don't even know any Ukrainians, and I tear up thinking about how fiercely they are fighting for their freedom, their democracy, their right to self-determination. We have a moral obligation to help them, they are fighting for the same principles that built Western civilization. And I also feel for the Russian protesters and honest journalists, true patriots who are risking their lives to exercise their right to free speech and demand that their country not stand for tyranny. So much courage we have seen in the last month.

I feel for Russian soldiers, too, and for Russian people. They were and are lied to, they are and were deceived and they were and are threatened by the loss of their lives and loss of their loved ones to follow Putin. Some Russian families will never know where their sons are, they went into battle and will never come back. "Missing in action" or "deserted" will be the claim though the reality will be "deceased".
Overall, this war is just a stupid waste of human lives, resources etc. So much pain on both sides and for what? Putin can't keep Ukraine, even if he were to win. After breaking all the contracts, he can't negotiate a peaceful solution either.

Had Putin actually invested in the Russian people, rather than wasting billions on the military and enriching oligarchic elites over two decades, Russia today could have been a healthy and prosperous republic. It might sound insane to all sides now, but it even could have been a candidate for the European Union (where it would have been its most influential member by far in terms of voting rights).
All of this because of one man's determination to restore an Empire he believes must exist.

I mean you could say the same thing for any authoritarian regime. China was moving toward being an international partner before Xi took over and decided to take the country's politics backward 30 years. North Korea's people could prosper if they opened up and allowed external integration and investment, particularly with their southern cousins.
But there's one common theme here: They operate based on what's best for the people in power, not what's best for the nation or its citizens. Sure the Russian people might have been better off, but could Putin own a multi-billion dollar mansion? A near-billion dollar yacht? Unlikely.
And now he wants to build a legacy as the guy who reunited the USSR, but that's turning out to be too much of a stretch for his hubris and history is going to end up writing him as the guy who ruined Russia, no matter how the war itself turns out. @JZ's Best Friend 20 days in, loads of vehicles lost, mostly due to poor maintenance, only a tiny bit of the country taken and the forces around Kyiv didn't move for days. They are looting all over the place for food, they can't get the fuel they need for their vehicles and the Ukrainians have captured loads of their vehicles. The are loads of videos on the internet showing all this along with various livestreams. For an army the size Russia has compared to Ukraine, they should have taken Kyiv in days and they clearly haven't done that.

This economy is screwed...always has been. The vast majority of work available is menial labor...food service, retail, janitors, grocers...a great many take their wages in government...which is far too big, complex and unsustainable...
Until any job can offer a modest secure household, until the only homeless are those who volunteer to live "free"...until the pill giants are mandated to make life saving medicine reasonably priced...we are a selfish, horrid nation, divided by the very people that oppress us, yet too busy fighting amongst ourselves to take any useful action towards a better tomorrow for the MANY, not the FEW......

If a Russian Oligarch or government official can hide in Putin's Russia he will. But if they leaves to say other country they will be caught and go on trial. If the government in Russia changes they will likely be caught and go on trial.
The world won't go to war 'in' Russia just to capture war criminals, because they would risk annihilation as a last ditch attempt by the criminals to avoid capture.

It seems to me like the final straw that caused Vlad to go crazy over Ukraine was when the democratically elected government allowed a gay pride parade to happen. My theory is that Putin is a repressed homosexual who started a horrible war because of Vladimir Putin's own repressed emotions over his own homosexuality.
The United Nations is not doing its job if Putin's Russia is not immediately taken off the UN Security Council it illegitimately took from the former USSR and replaced with Brazil and/or India.
India had twice the GDP before the collapse of the rouble and far more people than this failed desperate former Soviet state that no longer represents the communist Soviet Union and even uses it against the former Soviet Ukraine.
My guess is the only problem with that is some soildiers might be worried about that thier families might be harmed if they are caught giving up.... Who knows...just a thought

There *is* a small difference. What Trump does unconsciously and in a transparently stupid manner, Russia does in a very deliberate and insidious way. They're good enough at it that they manage to get western people on the far left and far right to carry water for them. Looking back on the past few years, I've seen countless bizarre conversations take the form of "oil companies pollute (or insert any other bad thing), therefore Russia cannot do anything wrong relative to the rest of the world." Conversations having nothing to do with Russia routinely get around to defending something Putin is doing or might want to do, and it isn't just Russian agents doing it.

Tonight I had biryani rice and spiced chicken just glistening with sauce fresh from the roaster.
