This is actually a story of my family... And probably the most accurate telling Ive heard yet. Thank you steve martin and Edie brickel! I truly appreciate it
My great great grandpa wrote the lyrics to this song. Mr. Barton. I have the original lyrics and the recording of the country artist who made the original recording. I have to look up his name. This is a nice thought on the original story. I have the St. Louis Post dispatch article. And a picture of my great great grandpa. He was a minister. That was a big story back then. An unwed mother was a great shame back in that time. My surname is Black. My relatives were from Black, Missouri in the Ozarks. Steve Martin can really play that banjo. I have always loved that instrument. Anyway, it’s a small world.
My great uncle was who found him
My Mom always comforted me with song. Still makes me cry. Thanks so much y'all. I'm from Ironton Missouri and had a tough time this and other works of your life have helped me through this life.
There is another comment from a family member down the list...
@@katycaselli3867 they’re both probably lying
Claw hammer at it's best from a funny man! 🎉 Man of many talents. Great song one of my very favorites! Whoo ohhh your my baby now...
This was the most improvised version of the four (one live) times I've her tell this story. Edie is a real treasure. A truly soulful human being...
Saw them at the Fox in Riverside last night as well... One of the best performances of bluegrass I have seen to date. They filmed it for PBS so keep your eyes out for it.
I couldn't imagine how amazing it would be to find a baby, a new born baby, at your doorstep.
approx. 6 wk old baby boy hurled from the Iron Mt. railroad trestle over and into the Big river, north of Irondale, MO. some 60 some odd miles sw of stl...
* 6 day old baby boy
I saw the play yesterday, and I had to know the rest of the story. Not a fairy tale, but a life lived, nonetheless.

Edie has a beautiful voice and a beautiful smile 😁
LOVED!!
I am addicted to this cd... seriously
Superb musicians and while I always liked Edie and Steve's other projects - this is my favorite. Its just the perfect amount and combination of everything. The bass player brings it all home - his touch and sound really adds that perfect "extra something".
Wonderful banjo playing steve martin and voice of Edie Brikell
Gawd I love Steve! Edie is brilliant! What fun!
Thank you for a nice while with beautiful song!
I love this song❤️👩🏻
love this song!!!!!!
What a great video!!! Awesome talent plus an interesting subject matter!!
You know, I just realized, you almost never see Steve Martin laugh. He's so serious and professional about making others laugh. But here, he did crack up a bit after he said, "Ahh.. yay... here we go." That was awesome.
It's not that he's serious, he's just one of the best straight men in the history of comedy.
I believed he was thinking about his wife who gave him a baby when he was 67 around that time, that is why everyone started laughing. I don't know how old his wife was at the time or the circumstances, it could have been a surrogate or she had actually had it.
@@persebra Thanks, this explains the joke...
I was wondering
She has the most wonderful smile.....
Boy, you said it!
Wow! Thanks for that site! I was mesmerized. Excellent concert - all the way to the very last song!
Perfect..!
excelente ....she is just so gorgeous buena onda buena espiritu
Love this song and not for the obvious reason. It's a great little toe tapper.
Sara Jane Haven Toe tapper? It's a thigh slapper!
So good.
love this! saw them do the song today on the ellen show..love it! :)
Her voice lovely
Just saw them on Ellen! They are great!!
brilliant
Omg look at Steve Martin omg
Did anyone else wonder if the baby might have been his "love child"? Ultimate mistress revenge=make him raise the kid. nah but I do believe that Edie has the most angelic voice, she could sing the repair manual for a dishwasher and I would still be entranced by the haunting melody her voice.
oh man, why so cynical? it was 1902, for crying out loud. don't detract from the beauty of the story/song.
One of the best concerts (not this one) I saw in 2013.
my God - isn't she lovely?
i'll never forgive Paul Simon for taking her from me....... SHE WAS MINE

O to write some lyrics like that while walking around the kitchen,,,,
David Mcbrady I know that’s right.
Best version was by a DJ from Farmington Mo radio station.
