There are some very isolated places in Australia where tourists love to visit but numbers are limited by the availability of accommodation. The same would apply in Greenland if it opened up more to tourists. I do think tourism could be a less destructive source of income than the major alternative, mining.
120%, tourism, especially if its organized & regulated like some of the smaller islands in SE Asia are, is gonna be less destructive than mining. Hopefully its something that can be changed in the future, as a lot of these remote places have airports/airstrips due to the remoteness, so all they'll need is Terminals & Tourist Amenities.
@@JustSomeAussieGamer All towns in Greenland are accessed only by air or by sea because the geography makes roads joining them impossible. They generally have airstrips or helipads. As you say, access for tourists just requires some organisation and some local accommodation.
Where i am from in the Caribbean the Dash 8-200/300 has served us well for many years my friend....for some islands that was the only way of transport, now ATR's run this town lol awesome video and greetings from St. Kitts and Nevis in the Caribbean :) !!
It remains to be seen whether or not thousands of people will arrive at Nuuk’s new airport once it is built. Having worked for 30 years in tourism in Nuuk, I seriously doubt it. International airlines aren’t going to arrive in droves just because we open a new airport. Personally, I think Kangerlussuaq should have been maintained as the main airport. They won’t be able to close it down anyway as it is still used by the military and it’s an alternative landing space for planes. Keeping costs down to an acceptable level, the runway could have been extended to 1500 meters for slightly larger planes and a new terminal building built. This could all have been done using only local companies and workforce. Such a solution would have served us well for a number of years while saving up to build a really long runway. There was a much better location to build a large airport south of the city. The city is expanding out towards that area anyway so infrastructure would not be a problem. There would have been no limit to the length of the runway. Many planes can’t land on 2200 meters. It’s too short, but as I understand it, extending the new runway beyond 2200 meters won’t be possible. I also worry about the noise level once the big jets start flying. One or two jets a day won’t be a problem, but ten or twenty? Instead of being frugal with our meager resources and thinking what is best for the community long-term, impatient and reckless politicians decided to go ahead and borrow money that will tie the next two to three generations to a large debt that will be like a millstone around their necks. Just because they wanted an easier flight to Copenhagen, bypassing Kangerlussuaq. Air Greenland just bought a brand new Airbus 330-800 wide body aircraft with room for 300 plus passengers. It was on its maiden voyage to Greenland just a few days ago. I’d love to see you do a review of that plane. Norsaq has been a trusty old workhorse. I’ve always felt safe onboard her. The interior may be a bit shabby nowadays, but she’s alright in all the important areas. Fortunately, Air Greenland doesn’t cut corners. Their safety record is pretty outstanding.
What an amazing experience Josh! - that was so kind of them to allow you in to the cockpit - glad all went well on the trip for you and you got to meet Katia - Gary 😀
One of my all-time favorite aircraft! I used to fly on these between Calgary and Edmonton in Alberta, Canada. Nice to see one again. Thanks for the memory!
Same! My most common experience is the YEG-YYC connector that every Edmontonian must take to get anywhere beyond Canada or select southern Sun destinations...
I've flown on all the variants of the Dash-8 aircraft and the -400 is my favourite. I think it's amazing that Air Greenland is flying the -200 on such a long stage. Very cool! Also, Hockey Night in Canada t-shirt at 7:37 - cool! Nice 😁😉
As a Canuck, I can't tell you how many Dash 8 flights I've taken especially living out west where this is basically half of all aircraft with 737's being the rest. NWT uses plenty of Dash's and ATR's to access all those tiny Northern gravel runways that would destroy most jet engines without that modify kit...
Interesting that my wife and I just returned from Greenland/Iceland a couple of weeks ago. I was following your channel when this video popped up. We actually did a round-trip to/from KEF direct into NUUK on an Icelandair Dash8-200. It's a fine aircraft for short (i.e. 1 hr) trips but 3 hrs is a long time. Too much noise and vibration even though we had seats 1 C and D. That said, I do like that Greenland is still "hard" to get to. My wife and I stayed in "old" Nuuk with the colorful houses near downtown. Views were gorgeous! Everything was surprisingly modern; not a harsh place at all, at least in the summer. And winding through the Fjords after takeoff back to KEF was a magnificent experience! So yes I think the extended runway and the accommodation of larger jets is regrettable even though it will be much more comfortable.
Amazing. What a beautiful part of the world. The isolation is the attraction I think. There has to be some sort of limitation on tourists. I would hate to think in a few years you would be rubbing shoulders with many others on the hill behind the airport to take in the view. Tourism brings prosperity true, but it has a lot of down sides. Really enjoyed the video Josh. Take care. Mick🇬🇧
As long as they limit the numbers tourism could be a good source of income for Greenland. The country can never be a cheap destination like Bali or the Caribbean but well organised and catered tours for tourists prepared to pay the price could be a major industry for this small population without much strain on the environment.
Hi I follow your weekly videos and enjoy them. The best one I liked was the Greenland trip and the flight to keflavik. Keep up the good work and keep them rolling.

Mass tourisms has it dangerous, especially in an environment like Greenland. During the winter times the cold can be lethal for unexperienced tourists so I feel it is good that it is difficult to go there.
