Easier said then done unfortunately..I value my work...but most artists are broke AF and really depends on what area you are in...I love doing music videos, but a lot of artists do not invest into their visuals...#truth

And most artist are not broke the way you think ( I had a client telling how he couldn't afford a price after he'd just tell me how he went and cop the iPhone X max cash) they just rather spend their money else where like, phone, latest shoes, clothes, cars, party every weekend, girls. but when it comes to pay you for your service they don't want to, they want 80% discount or free.

Since 2013 me and my music video production clients/friends have been pricing music videos very similarly
I agree $5,000 is a base starting cost for a professional basic music video.
add more for basic RED package (more for RED 8K sensor , Arri or special camera request)
Anything shot with RED for less than $10,000 is low budget, shoot for around $15,000 minimum.
Pro tip: invest the budget difference in additional costs instead of using RED if your camera is good enough and have solid skills.
Most people wont tell the difference between high quality properly exposed and graded mirrorless footage vs RED Cinema once its on TH-cam... I've sent sample Sony footage to my friends who shoot with RED daily and they thought I shot it with RED...
Sounds messed up but I can deliver better 4K HDR (Rec.2020PQ/ Rec.2100) out of my lil modified Sony than people I know who own RED and have no clue how to do HDR even though they have better sensor, codec, a few extra stops of dynamic range, better lenses etc... They deliver 4K SDR (Rec.709) still going into 2019....
With that said a better camera will not always give you a better video in the end.
add additional costs of anything requested over the base $5,000
+cost of additional equipment lights, client monitor, etc
+cost of rentals (vehicles, equipment, locations etc
+cost of talent models, actors, influencers, other artists with clout, extras
+cost of behind the scenes video
+cost of food for your crew and everyone *(doesn't have to be fancy unless its an upscale client or they requested something nice, always have at least water and snacks it keeps people in a good mood)
+cost props and everything extra that is not available at the artists/producers/record labels discretion.
Break down itemized costs of pre-production production and post-production are always appreciated by high value clients as they can see what they are paying for and the costs of everything involved.
Always do your best to make the video look like higher budget, clients will appreciate the higher value, it gives them a great return in their investment and keeps them coming back. It will also add skill level points to your experience as a music video producer and will give better results when showing previous work to new clientele.
    ___________________________________________
If a client can't afford or says it's too much respond with its actually not enough.
Slightly educate them on the process of monetization if you feel like doing so, otherwise just don't waste your time. Theres consultants out there who charge to help individuals starting out understand how to monetize content. So don't feel bad for charging consulting fees to talk about projects with clients who may or may not be too serious that way they don't end up wasting your time or theirs. Since they're paying for you consulting they will be more attentive to your recommendations on their projects success.
Never send a treatment or begin pre-production without a contract and/or deposit. Some shady artists/managers will dodge you after you send them pre-production material and go with someone cheaper to do it for them. They usually get a low quality video in the end so thats what they get, they end up killing their projects success rate. If it happens don't get upset move on to the next. Your creative time is extremely high value don't sell yourself short and settle for less. Continue to grow with this industry.
Every music video we have shot has generated a profitable return in their investment for the artists we have worked with.
I have seen music videos we shot with RED with a budget of $15,000 (we all put in our time so we actually barely covered production expenses) generate for the artist 337M TH-cam views
The artists and record label easily covered their expense for the video. There is ways out there to help estimate the revenue generated from 337M TH-cam views. Not to mention the side effect of higher Spotify, Apple Music, Tidal, etc audio streams which is additional revenue sources for your client.
So definitely if the client knows what they are doing with the music video you provide for them they can easily pay and profit 10x+ from just from uploading it to TH-cam... I've seen it happen multiple times...
I'm not an accountant or tax consultant but technically them paying you $5,000 , $10,000 , $50,000, etc is a cost of doing business for them and should be qualified as a tax write off for them, again Im not a tax expert consult your local tax person... since everywhere in the world is slightly different...
Once again since they're generating additional revenue then their costs, their cost is really low if you think about it since you're hooking them up with a revenue source... that is good for life...
If they're still struggling with payment or budgets show them estimates of artists they look up to and convince them they can get there if they're willing to make the sacrifices and put in the work, it might take time but they'll get where they need to be eventually.
Encourage them to grow and succeed in this industry we so hate to love working in because there will never be anything better.
Give them a taste of success, it's highly addictive.

You're awesome, man. And of course, I really like to hear that I deserve at least $5000 for my projects; but, in all honesty very few clients can afford that and clients who can (and are willing) are few and far between. Probably both sides are the problem, clients are cheap and undervalue our craft; but, at the same time, we sell ourselves cheap and downgrade our own market.

Totally agree, I do minimum of 1200 + catering + transportation for just me handheld with a dslr, no lighting. But for my producer, lighting gear, set designs, and other crew, I charge more depending on their rates. The best quality videos average out at 6k. I find that it's the artists who have more business sense that understand the cost best and don't fight me on it.

I 100 percent agree with you. In my area a large amount of people are starting to charge 700 US for a full production music video. The effect is that has become the new local stranded and some old clients have started saying that I've ripped them off because a new director is charging less for the same amount of work I put in , and it's really starting to hurt me and other creatives in my area. We can no longer afford to keep up with production cost such as rentals, paying staff, etc. The main thing that keeps me afloat is out of state clients.

Your right a percentage of somthing. Is better than a cut of nothing. And if you're making good quality work your name a buzz and you will get more work how you're moving.Wich a add up to more in the end and it a add up better i think. Most new artists aren't going to pay 5k a video especially for somthing that simple. And i aint Talkin trash if that guy paid him 5k for that simple video shot in a 1 scene garage he is just slow af 😂💯 On some other sh!t.I checked your page out you got a good style man.Nice B roll.Good transitions the effects match the beat and vocals.I subbed i look forward to seeing what you drop in the future.Keep up the good work g💯👍

Love this! So if the payment plan is set, do you release the video once it’s paid on full? How would you work that out? And of course not get the shaft from a non paying artist.

    • @OmarOmarOmar
      @OmarOmarOmar 5 ปีที่แล้ว

You have two options. First option is to release the video after the first payment and then they're contractually obligated to pay you due to the fact that the video is released. Second option is for the video to be released once the payment is made, but you could be waiting like a year till the video is out, which will suck for you cause you obviously want to show your work to your next client.

A very high majority of the artist in my area (Washington DC) could not even afford that and the ones that can dont invest that much into their visuals. I know my skills and talent are worth that price but if I told every potential client I charged $5k minimum I would probably get one video a year lol. I think for most people its better to work your way up. Say you increase your price with every few videos you do then you can justify it with your gain of experience. Ive never taken home more than $1k for a video after a year and a half of shooting music videos. Even YC Imaging only took home $1k from a $10k budget video. I understand knowing your worth and value but we have to be reasonable. Most people dont have $5k to spend on anything.

But once I get to working with small/Indie labels and other companies I'll have a more solid portfolio and a positive track record so I can secure those $5-10,000 jobs.
You gotta have a plan in place to get the things you want guys. He's not saying you need to charge $5k right away.

    • @OmarOmarOmar
      @OmarOmarOmar 5 ปีที่แล้ว

it's a tricky one. Even if you get a contract made up, if someone can't pay like 500 a month due to lack of funds, no matter what a judge says, if they aint got the cash, you won't see the money. Charging a client 5k is only good if they have that kind of money to spend. You wouldn't charge 99% of artists this number because they literally pay you with whatever they've got left over at the end of the month after paying for their weed habit.

IG: @director_j1s currently live in Atlanta its an insane amount of video production directors and you are exactly correct about the marks value...I’ve only been doing it for a short period but it’s so many artists coming up it’s plenty to go around with different budgets but that’s the thing, everyone’s budget is like 200-500 max but want their videos to look like 2chains or T.I. Videos just can’t work

Hey but people your production have to justify what you charging, not just go around asking some huge budget when your production is crap, remember anyone can carry a camera but it's take genius to create amazing content, so work on your contents first and be convince your self that you deserve more peace nice one olufemi big up
