I'm a Miklos Rozsa completist, so I'm glad I grabbed this Film Score Monthly CD when the getting was good because it goes for a fairly high price these days. The music is highly derivative of his score for LUST FOR LIFE, otherwise it's jingo all the way as required.
Opening sequence orchestra utilize reinforced sand bagged drum section that are producing sounds of 50cals..ignited drum barrels fougasse going off!! Feel it in the heart..Thank you for posting appreciated peace be too all
this was rozsa's only score for a john wayne film and it was one of his best.rozsa's music when the choppers flew over the make shift installation was especially great!
Silver wings upon their chest These are men, America's best One hundred men we'll test today But only three win the Green Beret THAT IS the Chorus! That is WHY it 'repeats' throughout the song. The song is called a "Ballad" because it tells a story as well as the slower singing style. Evaristo is correct, it is a beautiful, poignant song; very important, especially for it's era but SO applicable to today, as well. In fact, several European countries have adapted it for their soldiers/countries and some use it every day at their training schools.
Thank you, Fred. I said this before, and I'm saying it again. You are sharing some great treasures in the world of film soundtracks - for the benefit of all of us, music-lovers! Your effort and dedication is greatly appreciated. Some of your videos are pure jewels. Keep up your good work!!
+Ismael RR Thank you Ismael! Feedback like this makes me keeping the work up with joy! It is very clear to me that some film music cds get very expensive because of the very limited release, but everybody deserves to listen and should be allowed to learn from the great scores and composers and some time, just enjoy the thematic material! Thanks for everything! Fred
Fred, I’m a big John Wayne fan, and I’m as big an anti-Communist as you’ll find in America who wasn’t born abroad, but I saw this picture 10-15 years ago, and I still remember how terrible it was! Unfortunately, the Hollywood Reds and Communist sympathizers (Carl Foreman, Dalton Trumbo, Rod Serling, Walter Bernstein, et al.) were generally much better at propaganda than the patriots (e.g., James Edward Grant) were. Miklos Rozsa really threw himself into this score. But did he cannibalize any earlier work? His main theme sounds familiar.
I personally disagree with your take that the movie was terrible, but I respect your opinion. But to answer your question, part of Rozsa's score from 'Ben-Hur' is similar to one of the dramatic scores in this movie and is also similar to one he composed in the 'Golden Voyage of Sinbad'. I don't think this was done intentionally, but was just a very Rozsa 'tune' commonly found in his scores.
having lived through the era (born 1933) America was involved in Korea and still recovering from WWII. I lost High School friends to that "police action". I don't know what Service you are or were in but USA wasn't looking for any "new wars" at that time.
I beg to differ; take a look at "Flying Tigers" (1924) followed by MANY others through the years; too long a list to take up space here.. DOROTHY VELTHAUS
Love it! My brother served three tours and was awarded a Bronze Star.
Kevin Steacy Wow! You must be so proud of him!

Thank you Soundtrack Fred for expanding my access to so many wonderful pieces of music, especially so many full soundtracks.
It's a pleasure! Thank you so very much for those warm words, Dorothy.
Fred
these ballad of the green berets is really beautiful.
I don't think so.......the Ballad itself just repeats itself again and again, has no Chorus, Refrain, middle part or whatever you wanna call it.

Very patriotic which is needed today .

Affirmative!
The green beret is so great that that I'm down loading it
That intro was always what reminded me of this film. Thanks for this, Fred! :D
My company trained with the green berets, on night assaults and attacks,at fort Mccoy Wisconsin, in 1974.
Thank you for your service.
Diese Suite klingt etwas parodisch, doch unbedingt schön und zugleich lyrisch.
Outstanding !!!!!
So unlike Rozsa and just magnificent

Trump tries to bring shame to you but be proud , we are proud of you! Thank you for standing with Syrian Kurds
4:05 Do I hear ''Onward Christian Soldiers'' there?
Yes it was on the soundtrack, but that scene was deleted from the movie
It seems to be @ 03:53 to 04:20 when Anchor's Aweigh runs to about 04:50;- stirring inclusion...
Bad habit of deleting scenes
Worried about movies being too long
As if time matters
If only they had have been formed

Eisenhower vetoed involvement
Having secured a ceasefire in korea
Obviously he didnt want to commit
Ground troops LBJ did that ten years later!
made a change for john wayne to not be in a western ......
