I think that Spike Lee needs to understand that the use of the N-word in Tarantino's movies is used to point out racism or stupidity. This becomes clear _especially_ with Django Unchained, the Tarantino film I suspect Spike Lee likes the least.
Especially the hateful eight. Walton goggins character chris mannix is a blatant racist. But in the end, him and major marquis find common ground and beat the kind of people who are much worse. By the end of the film, he's still a racist but they both have respect for one another

QT throws the N-Word around quite a bit himself in Pulp Fiction. I doubt that was supposed to signify his racism. It’s more likely mean to to be funny.
@@iansmart4158 Tarantino's "dead n-word storage" was written like that to demonstrate that his character was personally close to Jules in the past, so that he feels comfortable using phrases the same as a black person would, but at the same time, his character is no longer in the crime world, he's now a suburban husband, and so he is cringy when he tries to sound tough. It's also funny, and the humor has nothing to do with the word being a racial slur.
the new candyman movie holds the distinction of being the first film directed by a black woman to reach number 1 in the box office. think about that...thats crazy to me.
BlacKkKlansman impressed me the most because I could tell how deeply it was researched. The casual observer might think that Lee was just making criticism of the Trump Administration, but it could have been made 30 years ago and still reflective of the Republican Party. Here's an excerpt from a David Duke era Klan handbook about the values of the KKK. See if any of that sounds familiar. IDEALS A KLANSMAN STANDS FOR 1. THE WHITE RACE: The irreplaceable hub of our nation, our Christian faith, and the high levels of Western culture and technology. 2. AMERICA FIRST: First before any foreign or alien influence or interest 3. THE CONSTITUTION: As originally written and intended. The finest system of government ever conceived by man. 4. FREE ENTERPRISE: Private property and ownership of business, but an end to high-finance exploitation. 5. POSITIVE CHRISTIANITY: The right of the American people to practice their faith -- including prayers in schools. Knights of the Ku Klux Klan Handbook, p. 3.
In Spike Lee’s ‘Do the right thing’(brilliant film) there’s a scene when some of the characters break the 4th wall and play to racist stereotypes. Surely this was a comment on the ignorance of hatred. Much akin to Tarantino’s use of “that” word. Seems to me Lee is being hypocritical. Words are only weapons when we socially construct them to be.
@@Hoganply But that poses the question is there such a thing as “individuality”? The majority follow and accept official narratives and acceptability. Only when a true visionary or leader emerges does it break the status quo. BUT! Then everyone starts following that narrative. I just wish folk would realise a lot of shit that goes on has been constructed like that to keep us divided and not keeping an eye on the weavers of this world.

@@Acord718 You could write a book on how many people Spike Lee doesn't like. Deep down Spike is pissed because he's a tiny little fellow with a funny looking face.
Spike Lee is genius filmmaker and great teacher-he mentored a whole generation of young black filmmakers during his time as a professor at Tisch. He’s also a massive sellout who does plenty of things just for the money. Tarantino on the other hand has maintained a degree of artistic purity, but all of his stuff since Death Proof has been so messy. It’s largely because his longtime editor and closest collaborator, Sally Menke, passed away after that production. Sally made Tarantino’s early work really sing, and without her his later work no longer has the same rhythmic qualities that initially made him famous. Also, Tarantino doesn’t seem to care about the next generation the way Spike Lee does-there are many people who try to imitate him, but almost no one has actually *learned from him*.
I wouldn’t say that Quentin Tarantino doesn’t care about the next generation. After all, he once said that directors should stop working after they’re 60 years old. He’s 58 right now, so I don’t think it’s a coincidence that his next movie will be his last.
IDK. Spike is a business man. He goes where the money is. He just so happens to also be a finally audacious genius in terms of how he uses images. And he’s one of the most consistently well-regarded docu-filmmakers ever. Nobody shoots as many one-man shows and stand-up specials as him looking for a pay-day. He’s constantly pushing himself. His films have distinct eras influenced by his time doing things else where. The recent gestures toward using documentary and research material in his fictional stories comes from having made so many documentaries recently. It’s fascinating to chart the arc of his career.

Neither one really complimented each other at all. Spike Lee even stuck in a jab saying something like "His (QT) time will pass too." Well, it's 2021, and his time hasn't passed yet. And if you bet the Knicks to lose every night you'll be WAY up most years.

I’ve never understood this saying aka thought of I couldn’t relate to characters or actors because they are white? I’m Asian American and I’ve never thought or felt this. When I see superman flying that’s me. When I see the main character kissing a stunner that’s me! People love too just cry and cry poor me!
Major Casting Directors don’t see you as Superman, and could never even fathom it. That’s the underlying issue at hand - that actors who want to portray a main character in screen, even if they could envision themselves as the Lead, could never get through the first audition because the Gatekeepers (Casting Directors) defaulted the normal casting for leads being only Caucasian looks. That’s the huge problem, and the overarching issue behind representation on screen. I’m glad you can see yourself in white leading characters. Not everyone can do the same thing - most people aren’t creative visually or imaginative. They need others to build the image first for them to see how great the concept is. That’s why diverse casting or diverse executive leadership is important.
@RollandB The next Captain America too. The US is too obsessed with this shit but anyone who thinks black Americans are under-represented in these things NOW is retarded. Black Americans make up like 13% of the population. They're overrepresented if anything. And good for them but people need to man the fvxk up.
Spike Lee's movies like Malcolm X or He got game, tell a story. Tarrntino movies tell a story but there is always violence. Violence up until the point where it seems like you are watching gore porn. Both are talented in their own right. But I tend to agree with Spike Lee. Tarantino has a weird obsession with the N word, violence and gore.
Tarantino is the superior filmmaker, and that's a fact. His films will be remembered long after Lee is dead and gone. Lee's presumption of Tarantino's intent behind his frequent use of racial slurs is just that: a presumption, which he CHOOSES to dwell on. And with this presumption Lee reveals his own obsession with race and hatred of white people as he reveals it in his open disdain for films in which blacks and whites become friends as opposed to enemies. He is absolutely fixated on race; it runs his existence, drives his "art." Lee's extremely talented. Imagine if he cared as much about telling a memorable story with interesting characters and quotable dialogue as he did about nailing whitey against the wall for the sins of 150 years ago.
A more consistent one possibly. But I think DO THE RIGHT THING alone will probably hold up a lot better than most of QTs films. Even Lees films that were less loved are getting. Reevaluated now. Bamboozled was hated in its time now ppl see it as a neat masterpiece.
What? Am I remembering wrong??Im a 80's kid, I loved watching Danny Glover,Whoopi Goldberg, Richard Pryor, robert townsend,Morgan Freeman,Bernie, that coleman dude.....messing with my mind here, nothing was in the 80's??
I think their feud is more of a misunderstanding. I think Spike Lee doesn't quite realise when Tarantino uses this language, he isn't going as a way of saying "oh, use this language" he is doing it in a way of this is how he seems these people talking. Using the N-word in his films, it is either a character who is black, like Samuel L. Jackson in Pulp Fiction or Ving Rhames or if they use it in a bad sense which isn't there to praise, more so there to show, this guy isn't the nicest or whatever. But I see why someone would get annoyed, it would be a little awkward for people to hear that word being said from the script written by a white man
Theyre both masters of the craft. Sure spike lee has way more misses but he has some great classics (do the right thing, jungle fever, malcolm x, summer of sam). To me quentin is just someone who plans more and where as spike just has to crank out a film every year or two so they’re not as focused sometimes. But yeah its art not sports, you cant compare their filmography’s like stats. They have different agendas/themes. Besides abel ferrara (king of new york) and john woo kick both their asses. Also i wish more tarantino fanboys (i include myself) would actually watch the movies/directors he’s influenced by (mario bava, abel, takeshi kitano, war kong wai, sam peckinpah).
This is one of the only smart comments I've seen on this video. I don't agree that Abel Ferrara is a better director, but I haven't seen that many of his movies. Can you expand on how wong kar wai influences tarantino?
@@m.w.r.1408 i think quentin likes the way wai depicts tender moments in relationships. Butch and his gf in pulp fiction, pam grier and robert forster in jackie brown has that fleeting romance where people enter each other lives briefly but will always remember it.

Tarantino makes real movies about real people, either from different times in history. In all these periods there has been the use of the N word, casually or maliciously. It's unfortunate but it's reality
Sidney Poitier, Cosby, Richard Pryor, Cecily Tyson, there's been lots of black actors, this notion they're not represented is ridiculous. Black people are 12% of the population, they're not going to be everywhere in everything
I don't know. I think I've only seen two of Lees films and didn't like them very much. I have seen more of Tarantinos and didn't like them in the beginning either. Now I do so I suppose I should watch more of Lees movies.
Spike is envious and jealous that Tarantino has received more accolades - simply because Quenton just makes better stories. Spike is also one of the most miserable and unhappy people on earth in spite of the fact that he is successful and wealthy. He is a woefully unlikable person.
Spike Lee has 1 great film. Quentin has 7 imo. You would never in a million years catch Quentin pushing out the kind of crap like the oldboy remake which Spike has been making for years now.
Spike Lee put Tarantino in Girl 6 and everyone assumed that there was some kind of relationship between them. However, Lee later said that the role was spoofing Tarantino, but that Quentin was too dumb to realize he was being ridiculed
Spike is a hater, racist and separatist and is just angry Tarantino makes more compelling black characters. Which would be different if Spike didn't trash all black directors other than himself and even Eddie Murphy who mainstreamed and elevated a generation of blacks. Tarantino makes movies far too violent for me, but his motivations are some kind of obsessive love of movies and other artists. Spike is mostly motivated by anger and hate with everything he does. It's a miracle he didn't totally screw up Malcolm X but maybe his cowriter was actually THE writer and Denzel fixes anything he touches.

By the end of the film, he's still a racist but they both have respect for one another
@@TJ-fe7rr I’d say he begins as a racist yes, but not one who hates with a burning passion. I’d say he’s just ignorant and prejudiced to not like them on account of how he grew up. I’d say racists really hate whatever race they hate to a T and won’t even talk or stand near them.
Spike Lee throws that word around too
That too will run its course. Well Spike its 2021 now. Thats one looong ass run.😉

IDEALS A KLANSMAN STANDS FOR
1. THE WHITE RACE: The irreplaceable hub of our nation, our Christian faith, and the high levels of Western culture and technology.
2. AMERICA FIRST:
First before any foreign or alien influence or interest
I'd go further. Words are only weapons when we individually construct them to be.
@@Hoganply But that poses the question is there such a thing as “individuality”? The majority follow and accept official narratives and acceptability. Only when a true visionary or leader emerges does it break the status quo. BUT! Then everyone starts following that narrative. I think there’s many originals out there but on the fringes and probably part of a sub culture. Imagine all the great music and film ideas we’re missing out on. I just wish folk would realise a lot of shit that goes on has been constructed like that to keep us divided and not keeping an eye on the weavers of this world.

PlayiN A Priest in your nxt Western Mr Quintin 🙏 Nice . .

You'd think they would be since they have such similar tastes in everything!
@@JonathanDennill Could it be that casting directors didn't think of Superman as Asian because the character's not actually asian..

Spike Lee's movies like Malcolm X or He got game, tell a story. Tarrntino movies tell a story but there is always violence. Violence up until the point where it seems like you are watching gore porn.
Lee will be remembered more as the years go by especially if the race tensions continue in US. Both of them have delivered equally good cinema

But I see why someone would get annoyed, it would be a little awkward for people to hear that word being said from the script written by a white man
When narcissists collide.

As much as I like Spike. It gets a bit tiring always seeing that race thing in his movies. I'd like to see him mix it up a bit.

Tarantino is the exact opposite of a racist. Seriously. You think Jamie Foxx would work for a racist? Sam L Jackson? How about Pam Grier? Anyone who calls Tarantino a racist has never encountered real racism.
I don't think QT is a racist, however his black characters are versions of 70's blaxploitation characters in a Tarantino movie if that makes sense.
I get what you mean but you could make the same point about QTs white gangster characters being versions of Scorcese gangsters from the 70s too.
Never sure what Spike’s issue is with QT bar he felt he was overtaken by Quentin

Spike is a hater, racist and separatist and is just angry Tarantino makes more compelling black characters. Which would be different if Spike didn't trash all black directors other than himself and even Eddie Murphy who mainstreamed and elevated a generation of blacks.
