Leon is the most difficult to use by far. Jack is the least equipped, but his body is a weapon that more than makes up for his lack of ordinance. I have 3 versions of this game, and I've found Leon to be the hardest to win with

Me brother was able to beat all stages with Leon (got 5 stars), but was and still is today, unable to beat waterworld with Krauser (🤣)

The hardest part for me is trying not to die after I get the 60,000 XD
I just go wild and unload all my ammo and healing items like a reckless idiot. All it takes is some dickhead to catch me from the side while I pass them lol

Leon was my least favorite because hes badly equipped, normally on the village I just collect all the timers and go up to the barn that way I just shoot/blow everyone with the bonus timer and when I run out of ammo, I use the flash bang so I can go down to collect it and then I climb back up, I am such a chicken xD
Lol.. Your reason with Leon being the least favorite is pretty the much the same reason everybody hates Leon due to poor equipment. I would assume they did that on purpose to make it very difficult to unlock the other characters. Because once you unlock them, it makes mercenaries a lot easier.

*Lizzy 712 : : : : : : : : : : :The next best place or just as good,would be waiting in the building opposite of the largest house in the village in the 2nd room wedged between the wall & the bed.Once you've gathered all the time from the checkpoints'(or most of it anyways,depending on where you plan to finish in the game) & picked up enough additional ammo of course that will really last you until you're capable of taking down abundant scores' of enemies(especially chief enemies')and just before grabbing the last bonus hourglass !* 😆👍
Leon is easy when you know how to use him correctly. You just have to find a place where is easier to kill enemies. It'll work. I know cus i tried it. Best way to kill enemies is to aim to their head too. Learn this and it should be a walk in the park.

its really strange, i read comments of people saying Leon has the worst equipment and is one of that hardest characters to use.. for me strangely enough was the easiest, with Leon you need to learn to control your aim and when to use your shotgun, as well as memorize correctly how every map is layed out, Leon was my first character i got 5 stars on each stage..i was insane back then xD.
You found Leon the easiest? That's something you don't typically hear. It's not that Leon is so hard to use, it's just that his weapons pale in comparison to the other characters. Leon is the only character that doesn't have the TMP or at least a sniper rifle to rack up the kills faster. Instead, you're stuck with a slow, weak shotgun and he has the weakest kick attack when it comes to stunned opponents. The worst part of his arsenal is the riot shotgun because it sometimes won't even blow the heads off the enemies. If he would have had the Striker, it would be a lot easier since that shotgun is more powerful.
Who was the hardest character for you to use?
To me the hardest character to use was Krauser, the fact that his bow is slow at firing, at least thats how i remember it, sure it may one or two shot lots of enemies and of course his arm is a instant kill but, we cant deny the fact that he was really vulnerable against crowds when you dont have your arm or grenades to help you out.
For me, Krauser is actually one of the easiest characters to use. I never struggled with Krauser because I always saved his arm when i was surrounded by enemies. And I rarely used the flash bangs since his arrows did the job. For the most part, I never got surrounded by too many enemies at once, so I mostly used his arm when it came down to the bosses.
But I see your point though. If surrounded with no arm and flash bangs, you're in trouble.
Krasuer is by far the easiest.

Thanks the castle run really helped added a little flavour of my own with some off yours . Helped me get through thanks again I don't try to get a great score just play to get through. I play it on xbox .
I finished Leon right now as the first of all, just because I read every where that he is hardest to achieve 5 stars. I hope it will be easier with the other ones now xD
All the others are definitely the easiest to use.
Update: Finished every character and got the handcannon :D Krauser was a bit difficult, HUNK was good and Ada and Wesker were the best (sniper is perfect to hold the row).
But everyone was easier than Leon xD

I just 5 starred mercenaries with Leon. Here’s what I did.
Start on the lower dock. Grab the time to your right, the shotgun shells, and time in the middle. Climb the ladder up as the dynamite grenado jumps down. Go to the treasure room through the doorway ( NOT THE WINDOW!!!) Dr. Salvadore will be sitting there. Empty 9-11 pistol
Round and turn around, run up to the zip line and turn around and empty the magazine. He will die in 15-18 pistol rounds.
From then I collected the grenade, some time and started getting a combo with a chest. Dr. spawned at 30. I hit him with a grenade, a barrel and my pistol and he dropped quickly.
From then I got more time, a bonus chest and kept combos up
"haven't play since 2005" *proceeds to get 60k like a normal day*

My score with Leon on water world is 30560,and with Wesker is 54670 and on castle with Wesker is 80090
It is difficult to get 5 stars with Kennedy in Waterworld.
It's easy bro i can get like 100k score with leon on waterworld just remember if the Dr.Salvador (Big Chainsaw) only needs 6 bullet of shotgun shots....
I recommended you watch "sarcosuchas" video how to get easy 60k because i learn it from him,and not only leon he share tips using all the mercenaries character

For some reason I got leon with the highest score in Waterworld while the other character with cool weapons and techniques barely got the 5 stars

The really made it difficult for us with basic leon... not even flashbangs or incendiary grenades, Specially water world and the compund
It was a pain in the ass to get all 5 stars for every character and after all that I finally got the hand cannon
You thought it was hard for all of them? The only one I truly found the hardest was Leon since he had the worst weapons layout compared to the other characters.

I want to see you play as Hunk! so fun to play as him.
For Hunk, I did okay with him. His neck breaker is great except it leaves you open to another attack. Too bad you can't do that neck breaker on the garrador or the Gatling man. I should have redone each level a second time with hunk as I could have done a lot better and I'm more used to him now.
***** Haha yea the neck breaker is pretty epic! Best way to get alot with it is throw a flash and just go on a neck snapping rampage. Yeah that'd be crazy if you could on those two. But yes dude and post it i'd def watch!
You know what, I never even once thought to flash everybody and do the neck break. You know what, I'm going to actually redo his mercenaries right now.

It actually is easy to get the 5 stars even though I honestly thought it was going to be tough. The only character that was hard to use was Leon as he has the worst weapons, besides the pistol. The shotgun is too slow and weak. Everybody else either had a TMP or Sniper Rifle, which makes it a lot easier to stack up kills. Ada, Krauser, Hunk and Wesker make it very simple.

oh, really. i hate those guy(chainsaw) and especially a group of ganados with a crossbow attack.
First you gotta lure Dr. Salvador in this part of the area 21:52 then keep shooting his faces and every time he climbs to your side, climb the same time as he is then repeat. This should work for you as it did for me.
leon isthe only character i cant get 5 stars in any stage :( and its the only one i need for get the fucking handcannon . why capcom didnt give him a better arsenal like a red 9 and a striker and granades ?
He doesn't have the best arsenal because he's the default character that's unlocked from the beginning. Since you have to unlock more characters with him, I'm assuming they didn't want to make it too easy for you.
TheLucasSlayer here is a tip: try to assemble as much enemies as you can near you. It won't be a problem since leon has the shotgun. Don't "waste" any kill with lonely, or sparsely groups of three or four ganados, because it will be harder to make many kills in a row. The much kills in a row you get, more points you have. Then you go to the barn upstairs, wait for them to crowd it, get the the kill bonus in the chest and shot the explosive barrel down there. Kill the surviving ones with your guns. Repeat the first process if necessary. I hope it helps, sorry for the bad english.
I had all 5 stars with everyone except leon.. I had 5 stars with him on all but one level, The waterworld. Super Salvador is super hard with leon
There is two explosive grenades in this scenario. In the higher tower and in the lodging (the room with the beds) near the stairs. You get those two, without killing the militia yet (if you kill many of them yet, the Salvador will come after you) head to one of the places where the super salvador is standing still, he will be turning on his chainsaw, you throw one of the grenades to bring him down. Remember your shotgun has to be full loaded, you shot him as many times as you can. Watch out for the militia around, you need to be fast. if you can't kill him at first, run and shot him from a distance with your pistol. he will eventualy be killed after the damage of the granade and the shotgun before. If want whatever, you can use the two grenades on this one and try to trap other in the barrels (avoid to explode it without hurting one of the "Salvadors").
There is another way to shot him for a while without him coming crazy after your. When you're been chased by him, you go up with on one of the ladders, he will jump directly to the top of it. If you get there before him, he wil be recovering for a moment, you use that time to trap him in a sequence of shotgun blasts, if you note he's getting himself together again, run and repeat the process somewhere else.
After these two annoying devils are gone, there will be plenty of militia alive for you to kill in a row. Try to keep this number growing before it fades alway. Use the chest bonus also.

You could try to playing around "jump window tricks" to kill super salvador especially with leon, with that trick i'd score 90k + for waterworld stages as leon..

@@jhoslerdunn8490 that won't work, because they can't improve the game more than already. The story is self-aware and campy and is one of the most viscerally satisfying stories in gaming. Its gameplay can neither be improved (except maybe for a quick select for weapons). If we could give Leon the ability to move while shooting or dodge roll, the game would lose its charm. It would be less like RE4 and more like any typical third person shooter (dead space, gears of war, the evil within and the predecessors of RE4 (not saying that they're bad games, but RE4 would lose its uniqueness among all the other cookie cutter third person shooters)).
I think it would be fun if there was Ashley in The Mercenaries with the broken butterfly or killer7 🤷🏼♀️
