Well, this vid is a game changer ! I already new that mid/side approach was really important and tried to integrate it in my work. Oh man. What a big win on information! I finaly stopped messin' around in the studio a few months back and got really serious about my recordings. So now challenging myself to achieve quality mixes. Mid/Side EQing was a great breakthrough for me a couple of months ago, but man, I've been struggeling with the balances between mid and side. My room is treated and I have good near field monitors, but as you mentioned, "blinds spots galore" in my room. And I don't even dare to mix the entire track on my Headphones. Now, it's a bit stupid becasue I've had the spam plugin for quite some time but never understood what the yellow portion spectrum was supposed to be telling me. So after watching this video, I went back to my master bus and what did I find?... RED in the upper mids and RED reocurring again and again in the high end. Made some corrections to the side EQs of the e-guitars and pretty much stripped 80% of the lead vocals out of the sides at around 4k with a wider Q. The mix got so much air and the vocals just pushed up the middel. I even had to reduce the overall lead vocals by 2db cause they were just yelling at me. I love it! Lonely Rocker, well explained.. so that even I was able to get it . Thanks so much for talking... like directly to me. Oh yeah! Keep on Rockin'! All the best, Mick

A great video and I'd really like to see a deeper dive as you mentioned. As we all suffer hearing degradation over age, these are also great tools for just checking you're not upping the highs to the point of overcompensating. Love your videos dude.
wow man! I had one free hour today to kill the time , kidding, I was just looking for videos on M-S Recording and luckily I found your video on M-S EQ (which was not what I was looking for) and I was blowwwwn!! Then I watched your videos on compression, gain stage and this one, the Spectrum Analyzer, and have to applaud you not only for the great information but also for the quality of how you deliver it. I love the daily life examples (sponge trying to fit a cup/toilet paper, straw on compression) and the well put visuals that make your videos really easy to digest. Thank you so much for your time on make the videos and if I could make a request for a future video, could you in the future make a video of how you mix OR master any song? Anyways.. what a gem I have found today! Subscribed!
I somehow missed this awesome comment! Thank you so much!! I'm glad you found value in these videos. I've shifted my channel a bit since these videos and lean more on my guitar player side...in a studio. So I don't really do mix tutorials anymore. I hope that doesn't mean you will lose interest now! ;-). Thank you for your kind words!
I greatly appreciate this fantastic tutorial. It is remarkably well-explained and immensely valuable. Just out of curiosity, around 16:45, you mentioned to place side frequencies within the green (mid) frequency area. Is there a specific reason behind this recommendation? I did some experiments and indeed found that placing side frequencies within the mid area produces a more pleasing sound, but I am eager to hear your insights on this matter. By the way, I also watched your tutorial on mid/side frequencies, which was equally impressive.
Thank you so much for your kind words! So glad it helped. Some small things I wish I could correct in this video like referring to a kick drum which typically is recorded in mono. I was using a stereo drum plugin so it had some rumble on the sides. Anyways. As far as the mud side balance this is the only Meyer I have found that does this. My guess is it is balance by keeping sides tucked within the range of the mids. Mids ate the sum of the sides so perhaps this is simply keeping those levels in check. If you listen to the mixes I referenced at the end of the video you get a sense of how that translates. Cheers!
@@LonelyRocker I appreciate your answer. It's logical that our attention should remain centered, with the side parts supporting and providing a sense of space. Additionally, I've been using Brainworx's Solo plugin to monitor the output from the center and sides. Your vids are awesome. Subbed!
I've actually given that some thought. I had a chance to do a tutorial on this for Voxengo but it is quite complicated so I did a different plugin. I really just use it for the mid/side feature. If I ever get deeper into it I will consider it...

@@LonelyRocker Thank you. Yes, it has been down for a while. I will keep watching his site and I hope everything is alright as well. Thank you, thank you.
You have a lovely way of explaining thank you. Total amateur so excuse silly Q but why should the sides sit inside the mid? So what if for some frequencies they’re more audible on the sides. I’m not sure how or why that would make something sound muddy or wrong.
Thank you! When I say inside I'm referring to how the analyzer creates the visual for you. In reality the mids are the sum of the sides, there really are only two sides in stereo and everything else is relative to that. Muddiness comes from instruments ganging up in the same frequencies. You can use a stereo EQ to try and remove those conflicts or you can use MS EQ to get a little more surgical. Once you understand that it's a very effective mixing tool. Hope that helps!
@@LonelyRocker thanks so much for quick reply. I didn't make myself clear sorry. What I mean is why do you effectively say the amplitude of the side bits (as represented by the lower graph) should be less than the amplitude for the mids at all frequencies (represented as the sides graph sitting underneath/within/inside the larger mid EQ curve).? Effectively saying that if certain frequencies are louder on the sides than the mid section (sum) it won't sound right? Unless I've missing something sorry !
Did you watch my mid side eq video? If you watch the two together I think that will answer your question better than I can explain here. I believe it’s linked from this video.
@@LonelyRocker will doo :D also one more thing got any tips on how to put bass or 808 in the dead center i got tones of beats but cant release cause of mixing and mastering sadly i dont have equipment so with the right skill i can do it
What makes your video apart from the competition is, your narration which is honest and serious, you don't try to be funny or to show how much humor you have as so many guys here on TH-cam which focus first to give the feeling how cool and funny they are, that is why to find something like you was difficult to find but now, I will check your videos because how you make them is exactly how it must be done. ! By the way, panning to the left and to the right is something that must be very common since music was first produced, however, checking how the mix is developing using MONO check, very often, those instruments panned too much, tend to disappear in MONO check, sometimes, not possible to listen at all while in MONO check, however, in STEREO, all seems to be fine, my question to you is if you understand what is my point, if you control your songs making a MONO check sound test to see if all instruments are there to be listened, please, elaborate on this if you think is valid what I am saying. Normally, I use Samplitude, and it has a great way to check the mixes using MONO check, for example, at times I fight a lot with some tracks which show up in Samplitude too much stereo and Samplitude warns me with a red sign that something is very bad with the track, indicating that so as it is, it will be not noticeable the sound when listening in MONO, etc., sorry for trying to explain my point, I wish I could write in Spanish for me to be better to explain, thanks a lot for such work and your fantastic videos! Greetings from Germany, Alfredo
I do have moments where I try to share some of my natural humour but I also know when to be serious. thanks for your thoughts and input. Glad to have you here!
@@LonelyRocker Hi there, thanks for replaying, you said nothing about the MONO Check thing I was mentioning in one of my posts, wish you a nice day over there in Canada! Alfredo
Please answer me❤… (in the Mix) putting the spectrum analysis on the master track ? And using the mid side eq on every single track, right? And in ( the mastering session) we’ll do the same ? Thanks 😊
Yes, exactly. The analyzer looks at the whole mix and each EQ corrects individual tracks. You can but EQs on busses and the master too...just be careful and only do what it needs. You can get lost in this. Mastering is a whole different thing. I wouldn't touch any mid/side EQ in Mastering if it's mixed right unless you know exactly what you're doing. Keep the mastering stage simple...good luck!!
@@LonelyRocker You are amazing thanks for your response , I noticed that the midside EQ doesn’t work with mono tracks, so how can I do that for base and kick drum? Thanks 🙏
@@karadytube My pleasure. Mid and sides only apply to stereo signals so just use a regular EQ. I know some people were confused because I used a kick drum as an example but you could use a M/S eq on a drum buss to clear out some frequencies you don't want...
If I have a song and I want it to be mastered by you, I love your compassion already and you're just genuine, and I do have the pro 3 Fab I believe it's called, you know the equalizer if I have you first I guess I need to ask you to master songs and if I have you master a song could you tell me what you did how you use the pro 3 because I don't have a clue how to use it everywhere I go it gets confusing. I know it's the Great EQ it's a nice one but I'm just not sure how to use it especially like on my song and I really want to put out an album, like soon I don't have that much money. But I know I need to do this the right way at least the first time. I mean I got everything to master pretty much, I even got the speaker to listen to you know mono house music I do house music, and so I'm just wondering and if you don't do it you know who could. But I need to know what exactly what was done so I can go over it and redo the song myself you know what I mean with the EQ I appreciate you God bless you

If it’s a stereo delay it will most definitely be present in the sides. Perhaps bus your delays and EQ them separately.
@@LonelyRocker will doo :D also one more thing got any tips on how to put bass or 808 in the dead center i got tones of beats but cant release cause of mixing and mastering sadly i dont have equipment so with the right skill i can do it
@@geestarworld5181 Check Out My Mid/Side EQ video on my channel. That should help you...
@@LonelyRocker
You are amazing thanks for your response , I noticed that the midside EQ doesn’t work with mono tracks, so how can I do that for base and kick drum? Thanks 🙏
@@karadytube My pleasure. Mid and sides only apply to stereo signals so just use a regular EQ. I know some people were confused because I used a kick drum as an example but you could use a M/S eq on a drum buss to clear out some frequencies you don't want...
@@LonelyRocker
Thank you 🙏 love you 🙏
Downloaded your link not same plug in nice one for confusing me more
Sorry this is not a new video...is the link bad?

Thank you so so much!
This is a class video and one I shall be using to help me with my total novice level mix downs
Thanks so much!! Glad you found it helpful. Cheers!
damn I pay thousands in plugins and don't have this, I have all Izotope and all Waves can we do that with those?
The Span plugin is the only one I know that shows mid side like that.
Brilliant
Thnx!!
Great video and subbed because the knowledge is here.

6:41 that looks blue to me... Now I'm paranoid I'm colorblind
😂Oh it's definitely purple...you may want to check your screen or your eyes 😁
Million Dollar vid...❤
when are they going to make an analyzers that you can just adjust each track right there instead of having to put the eq on the track and go back and forth
Not everyone wants an all in one. And it’s not necessarily the best way to do it for everyone.
Thankyou
You're welcome 😊
Bravo!
Thnx Again :)
Doesn't this tool also have a vectorscope? I swear I WATCHED a video, And at the bottom of MMulti/ Another window flips out and there is vectorscope and something else... When I looked it doesn't say that is a feature? No way I tripped that out!
Maybe you saw it in a dream :))))))))
@@LonelyRocker So crazy because that was the day I subscribed to your channel went through my history no video lool
Brought this though, Plus SSL X Saturator. well good value in the deals.
Yeah I saw it somewhere haha But I brought this anyway not a deal breaker. Use Span also but that does crash out my DAW if I don't turn it off when I bounce a track out! Always forget as well to turn it off before doing it.
Grabbed this, And SSL X Saturator I like that but would only buy it when its on this type of sale! Glad that popped up also.
@@LonelyRocker th-cam.com/video/GznqAvGCcPw/w-d-xo.html I'm not crazy I did see it lool
@@LonelyRocker It is insight 2 under that haha but that is a nice combo to look at.
Kitchen? Lol no way! Hahaha.
Did I talk about a kitchen in this video? My new studio that I'm in now used to be a kitchen... ;)
