I just want to say that your efforts change lives, Miss Penny! Not a single person in my country teaches Bach, and we don’t have the culture of playing Western instruments to it’s kind of a passion (suffering) to be in love with Bach’s music: Having to learn on my own! And this invention no. 14, though I self-taught to play somewhat acceptably, I could never perform it to perfection. I’m beyond grateful that you’ve made such an detailed (and philosophical) guide. Everything you say makes perfect sense to me. I will for sure clean up this piece and play it better.
Coincidentally It also dawned on me the same idea of being a musical tour guide, when I played Bach to my family and my friends and I pointed them towards those ‘magic’! I have long decided to devote the rest of my life to being THE tour guide, regardless of being on the road no one else around here has ever traveled 😊
Thank you once again. I love the Sinfonia no. 14 too, but it’s miserable I can barely penetrate it at all 😢. Hope you can shed some light on that piece when you can. These videos are just exhausting to make!! God bless you!

Thank you very much, Eddy!!❤️ Indeed, the road less traveled is the best place to be. I am glad to know that the video was helpful. Viewer comments are super useful to me. Without them, it's hard to know how to proceed beyond simply gushing about the piano!😅 Thank you for sharing your experiences with Mr. B. I can appreciate some of the challenges you mentioned. I think we all have areas in our lives, where we feel that we are "the only one" with a particular interest or passion. It can be a challenge, indeed, but passion knows no barrier.✨ How fortunate we are to share and exchange ideas electronically. I wish you happy practicing and tour-guiding!🗺️🧭🎵

After 1,4,8, I am practicing this piece, and I like to play with pedal as you suggested here, still struggle to find the perfect sound, again, Penny, you have been immensely helpful in my Bach pursuit. Thank You

Hi Penny I just want to share my experience as a musician. Bach is also my favorite composer, I guess you could say I'm a Bach nerd in the making. I'm currently working through my ABRSM workbook grade 2, and that all those hours of study is finally coming together for me. Music theory is sort of painful, but it is a necessary evil to appreciate Bachs works much better. I've played guitar for 10 years and am keen to begin learning keyboard (not piano) so that I can one day play bachs four part chorales which are beautiful harmony lessons on their own. My favorite (one of many) of bachs is passaglia in c minor. The bwv 1007 is a beautiful example of melody mastery. Your videos enthuse me greatly and even though I'm a newbie, I still lament great joy in your videos. Thank you penny, but thank God himself and bach for making such beauty! I will always support you, for I want to be where you're at and my ambition is ferocious! Bless you Penny.

I loved this video! Listening to you talk of your music is my favourite. You have such passion and you light up the screen! I was fascinated by the whole lesson; and I loved seeing the different parts you referred to in different colours (from your resident colour girl ☺️). Keep on releasing the videos Penny! Can’t wait for the next one!

Aw, thank you so much, Roseanne! 💕 It's always difficult getting started with these talking videos. I push record and start talking, but then have to keep stopping and starting until I find my footing and some sort of coherency. It's quite a slog until I get things going, but eventually the words seem to come. I do have to plan for days/weeks with how to present an idea and I like to mention books, but that takes advance planning, as well. I am so slow with this sort of thing, but I do enjoy it! ☺️🎹

Thanks for this video :) I’m from Ontario. At the same time as Bits and Bites were being marketed, there was a popular dog food available called Kibbles and Bits. One day, I was in the grocery store with my mom and I started begging her to buy some more Kibbles and Bits for me, because I loved them so much. Of course I’d simply gotten the names mixed up. She immediately shushed me, which I couldn’t understand, so I just begged for the “Kibbles and Bits” even louder. My mom was totally embarrassed because there was a man in the aisle who had stopped to look at us, wearing a horrified expression. Finally my mom cried out hysterically, “it’s Bits and Bites!!!!!!! Bits and Bites!!” The man moved on as I realized my mistake and laughed so hard. I was 6.

Thank you, Nicole and thanks for the very good story! 😅Yes, I remember the Kibbles & Bits commercial...Kibbles & Bits & Bits & Bits, we want some more Kibbles & Bits! Haha oh dear. It makes sense that you got the names mixed up. I guess we won't know what those taste like, eh?!🐶

Have you ever played the fugue no. 7 from the second book of WTC? it would be great if you could do a tutorial like this, I found it really helpful

Thank you! I have played the E-flat major Prelude & Fugue from Book 2 and will add it to my tutorial To-Do list, which is getting quite long. My goodness, I really do need more hours in a day to cover all of this great music! Hopefully there will be tips in other tutorials that can be applied to any piece. I do try to keep this in mind when figuring out what things to talk about in a given piece.

Thank you Penny - we're definitely getting the highest quality Bach education here!
I recently started to analyze this piece (785) for someone I know (Grace Byrne, recovering from a brain injury, see th-cam.com/video/fPMyy1hWd5s/w-d-xo.html) who wanted to memorize it.
I wanted to show her a way that didn't involve trying to remember hugely long strings of notes.
However, I soon discovered that it is much more complex than I initially expected, and I didn't complete the analysis. I therefore appreciate your work very much.
I will send Grace a link to this video.
About sustain pedal pedalling: I agree with everything you said, and very much appreciate the pedalling video clips at the end.
    😃

I don't think you need to pedal for the Baroque period's music.

    • @pennyplaysbach
      @pennyplaysbach  ปีที่แล้ว +3

That’s fine, everyone must do as they see fit.

As a harpsichordist I'd beg to differ! So often I overlap and hold down notes as long as I can to get more sound and resonance when appropriate. We have to work hard for that pedal down sound!!!
