      Do you by chane have your moms recipe? I am an estranged adult child. Ive lost my parents for reasons im not good to share but...finding myself in the place of trying to raise 2 little girls and not knowing at all what a good parent looks like so...do you have a recipe? I want to make good memories filled with love...and not just them remembering how much pain and suffering I survive through. I think im scared they will internalize it and self blame. We happen to make seriously good fruit cake in the UK, and they vary from the lighter Tea-bread, to the full on Christmas Cake. I used to make my own Christmas Cakes, but since I'm allergic to the whole cereal family, and there's only my youngest Son at home now, it's a bit much, but Aldi happen to be very good at producing a great Christmas cake. I once had a Dundee cake actually brought from Dundee, and that was amazing. It's just a shame they don't love me back. I'm sure your worms are going to love eating all that cake. Is it odd I'm sat here a little envious of worms right now... ☺🤣

    Hi Jayne, I'm a big fan of fruitcake, so my worms have yet to taste it but I'll make sure to save them some next time. I sometimes put a couple of biscuits in the grinder when I'm making chow, so I know they have a sweet tooth. I wish I could get my castings to look anything like yours, they look fabulous. I think I need to start moving away from my ex CFT which is now just one big box of worms, and get more trays so I can manage the castings easier. It's all work in progress and it's all great fun. Thanks again for your invaluable videos.🥰

      Hi Bill! Another fan of fruit cake! WOW! There’s more of you than I thought 🤗. Good deal 😎. Oh yes the worms have a sweet tooth - as does the biota and other bin companions. Everyone is going to be so happy 🤩.
      I’ve put in various crackers too into my worm chow. In fact I have another clean out the cabinet food to give the worms soon!
      I credit my castings to the pre-compost bedding. It really is the foundation to my worm wrangling success.
      I’m not ready to declare this yet but… I’m finding that my overpopulated bins are giving me ready to sift castings more consistently than my big worn totes and troughs did. I need to see these results for a longer timeframe but it’s leaning that way so far. So maybe moving at least some of your worms into bins might be helpful to you 🤷‍♂️. I’ve been toying with this idea too - to keep a lot of the growing worms in large totes for convenience but then move scoops of them to bins to ‘finish’ growing them or increase cocoons or castings generation. Just another crazy Jayne experiment 😂😂🪱🪱

    Bad store bought fruit cake has given all fruit cake a bad name. I love the no bake fruit cake I make and a lot of people that I have shared mine with (that say they don't like fruitcake) like mine. It has a graham cracker base instead of a flour base like most fruitcakes. I'm a newbie to worm farming...still trying to get my first bin going. Started out with 50 worms and it is taking forever...wish I had more so things would move along faster. I have learned a lot from your videos. What size and where do you get the bins like the one in this video? Thank you for sharing all your knowledge with us.

      I also started out with only a few worms. The first 6 months saw increases but not the rapid increase I expected 😡. That’s when I went looking for information and found not as much as I’d hoped and not really the kind of information and help I needed. That’s what led me to eventually start this channel. I’m glad you are finding it helpful! 🤗.
      I did find that changing my bedding to the pre-compost had a huge positive effect on worm population growth as well as castings generation. You might want to give it a try 😊. I have a playlist regarding making it if you’re interested.
      The bins I got from Walmart. They’re still out of stock online but the store had them on the shelf too. Regardless, the link will give you the size and other info so you can find them or something similar. I really like the bins!

      My mom made refrigerator fruit cake. She’d make a small one for me with only raisins, which I picked out. Without the fruit you almost need a hacksaw to cut it. • @RockinWorms
      @RockinWorms  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hi Juanita! That’s so nice that your mom made great fruit cake ❤️. Is she around or you have her recipe?
      No you’re not forgetting a thing! It could heat up as any feeding of non carbon can. But it’s in a zone and the worms have plenty of space to be away from any potential overheating. Several worm wranglers on TH-cam give huge feedings that cover the entire bin/bag surface - I do always wonder if THIS time it’s going to be a problem 🤷‍♂️. I prefer the zone feeding method. That said I do mix in worm chow throughout my breeder bins but have done that enough that I can eye ball the safe amount to add. Any non overheating I get (rarely but it does happen) is from me rushing to use pre-compost too soon, where it hasn’t cooled down enough yet 😳🙄😩.
      I guess we will see how it goes soon enough 🤞🙏🪱. Thanks for stopping by Juanita! 💕

    Hey so im not positive but i think im seeing the same problem i had with sifting. Are bits of your worms being chopped off and passing through the sifter? The very first time i harvested castings was with 1/4" using wigglers. I wasnt even trying to get coccoons. it was like a guillotine and it decimated my population to the point where now I just bait out my worms and apologize to the rest.

    • @TheTraderPatrick
      @TheTraderPatrick 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I am a new worm farmer and I have also wondered if sifting through a wire mesh harms the worms. Seems very abrasive and the worms are very fleshy?

    • @ForsakenCrimmy
      @ForsakenCrimmy 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @TheTraderPatrick in my case yes that was an issue. It took 6 months to rebuild my population after the first sifting. The worms also seem really stunned/shocked/stressed after this video. Not all but a lot are barely moving. It's most likely nothing and this obviously works for her. Just like me I've decided it's easier to soak a bunch of paper with pumpkin pureee and lure out most of mine 1-2 days before harvesting.

    • @RockinWorms
      @RockinWorms  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hi! I haven’t seen any worms damaged or cut in half by the sifters I use. If one gets stuck and I try to free it I can do damage that way. Many of the worm wranglers (certainly not all!) use these exact sifters as well and have for years and have not reported sustained worm damage. Most of the worms don’t even go thru the screens. Or alternatively they are so much smaller than the sifter holes they drop right thru. The sifter surface is a bit rough - it is. And it helps break up clumps and aids the sifting process. I don’t know why your worms were guillotined 😳😩. That’s bad! Was it this brand of sifter- SE?
      As for my worms being stunned and sluggish I don’t disagree. I’m still dealing with worms rescued from the mass die off and they’re still in what has turned out to be unhappy bedding from the overheated Black Beauty trough. These worms were some of those worms. I didn’t know that the overheated bedding would be bad for the survivors to stay in. 🤷‍♂️😡. I just realized this last week (about 3.5 weeks after the overheating event) and I have lots of bins to reset with new fresh bedding now that I do know it needs to be done. It takes a lot of bedding and a lot of time to reset so many bins and I am making progress on them. 👍. The bottom line is that I’m digging myself out of a hole the overheating event out me into. A hole that I didn’t even know was as deep as it was until recently. 😳😡. It’s been a real learning experience!
      I totally agree that migration or bait trapping the worms out is indeed much softer on the worms. It’s one reason I pick out my breeder worms when resetting their bins vs sifting them out like I used to. Methods improve over time! 💕🤩. But I don’t think sifting itself is harmful to the worms if the sifter is ok and the worms aren’t crawling thru the holes much.
      Open question to the Crew - what’s your experience with worm damage, or not, when sifting with a metal screen? 🪱🪱

    • @ForsakenCrimmy
      @ForsakenCrimmy 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @RockinWorms in the early parts of your video I was seeing bits near the lower right and lower center. My first time sifting the castings were so waterlogged it was basically mud. I've not ever tried sifting again so I am entirely biased d and I honestly approach this with a lens of curiosity. It was actually your video that taught wm baiting them out. A bit of that weird perforated cardboard and a 50 cent can of pumpkin puree and 24 hours later I can remove the majority of my worms in 1 handful as they've tangled up in the layers of pumpkin paper.

    • @RockinWorms
      @RockinWorms  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@ForsakenCrimmy I’ll rewatch the video and try to see what you’re seeing. I’m fairly certain it won’t be worm bits but I’ve been wrong before. Not on worm bits! But on other things 🤣. I’ll get back to you 😎.
      I’ve had really good success with baiting out as you said and saw. It’s a great method! Totally endorse it. My preferred is migrating but that just a type of baiting zone action. 👍🤩.
      As I replied in other comments, these worms (as well as worms in several other bins) are rescue worms and I didn’t fully understand until rather recently how unhappy they are in the rescued bedding. And some of the worms are in mixed bedding and mixed worms - as in some rescue worms, some worms that were inside worms. I’m working as best I can to reset these bins. 😊🪱.
