Been a Grand Funk fan since from their first album on. And GFR was the first concert I ever went to back in 71, Bloodrock opened. And I caught the band again 74 then in 81 with just Mark and Don the originals in then then the reunion in 98. Mark is a great guy and guitar player and singer writer. Will check out the solo stuff online and see as to when I can go from there, Thanks to Pete for getting the interviews.

Another rock fan that got to see Bloodrock..I'm so jealous! I was a tad young when that tour came around, but me & the gang were HUGE GF and Bloodrock fans here in WNY! I was told that Bloodrock was so good--they stole the show. I couldn't and still can't fathom that all these decades later! I got to see GF the next tour later that year, with unknowns Black Oak Arkansas...my 1st rock show. Both BOA & GF blew my mind! But I always have regretted not seeing that earlier tour with Bloodrock opening. If you have any memories....please share? Regards, T

I became a great great, Grand Funk Railroad fan absolutely loving on time Grand Funk Railroad live where in American band and your masterpiece closer to home. I’m so happy for you that you have a new album out closer to my home. Can’t wait to hear that. I also saw GFR at Madison Square Garden in the early 70s and it was amazing. God bless you, Mark you’re not only a great gifted singer, songwriter, guitarist and musician but to me you are the heart and soul of Grand Funk so get the guys together huh and get on the road huh All right love you keep singing and do you still use and have some of those old carving guitars dedicated thanks again Pete for being a fan of such a brilliant and underrated American band exclamation exclamation exclamation

...one of Rock's best vocalist, IMO. A soulful & R&B vibe that most Rockers lacked.
MARK, DON, & MEL was my 1st GFR album; when you're a young teen, Greatest Hits albums, I guess, were a thing.
Back then, I never got their negative press. Eventually, I just came to believe Rock critics (CIRCUS, ROLLING STONE, et al) did not really like Rock music.

    • @wolf1977
      @wolf1977 4 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

As to RS - I totally discount them when it comes to music. Not really a big fan of any specific music critic either, that's the kind of thing where you have to follow one for a while to see if their musical tastes align with yours & if so you've got a 'guide' (or conversely one you just about always disagree with so if they pan an album you know you'll probably like it).
Early on I used Lillian Roxon's Rock Encyclopedia as a guide & that was generally great - I bought lots of albums based on her writeups of them. There were fairly complete discographies of lots of bands included so honestly I used it more to find bands/albums that I didn't know about & not buying on her opinions of the music

Mark Farner I hope you read this. I want to convey a few thoughts about how you changed my life.
My cousin told me about your band in early 1970. I got from his 8-track tape onto my reel to reel the albums On Time and Grand Funk(Red Album). I played the hell out of them both driving my Dad crazy. I then got Closer to Home and Live Album and saw you guys perform Nov 7, 1970 in Charleston, SC.
At that time I was heavily involved in my church. We even had a small house provided by our church where we could play rock records and play ping pong. But I was conflicted with rock music and the church. When “I Can Feel Him in the Morning” came on the Survival album and “So You Won’t Have to Die” from the Phoenix album which said “Jesus is the solution”; it eased my mind quite a bit. As far as I know you were ahead of everyone mixing Christian music with rock…and I want to tell you it made a difference in my life.
To me your words of forgiveness have a power that can touch us all, and I want to thank you for expressing that in this video.
I saw your band again in Sept of 1973 at the Omni at Atlanta. I can’t remember the exact date, but you played “Anybody’s Answer” that night and I loved it as it is one of my favorite songs of yours. I saw you again in ‘75. After that I joined the US Navy and left my concert years behind me at the age of twenty.
I noticed the three albums you picked as favorites ,On Time, Closer to Home & E Pluribus Funk, …you wrote all the songs on those 3 records. You may have not realized that, but it says a lot to me about how important you were to the band.
I have been next to and heard the band of your former mates a couple of times. I refuse to pay to see them. But they do mostly covers and “We’re An American Band” which you gave away your songwriting credits.
And they have to play your “I’m Your Captain” or they would get booed off the stage. It’s so cool that you have forgiveness in your heart, but I hope they have to pay you through the nose every time they play that song. You deserve it brother.
Thanks Mark…you are still saying your “Words of Wisdom” …”When they hand you something…don’t take it.. don’t take it…ok”.

First of all I really loved the interview with the Captain himself Steve Farner. I have a few comments and the one being seeing him play, getting his new music and Grand Funk and the Hall Of Shame. First of all the Hall has been wrong for a long time. It started at perception by opening in Cleveland, nothing personal there is no place more deserving of the Hall than Detroit. Ask Kiss no promotion in Detroit by the fans, Cobo Hall and Creek magazine and many if not most would have even heard of Kiss despite being from the Big Apple. Second Grand Funk Railroad belongs in the Hall no matter where it's at. His bandmates need to wake up life is too short and I want to see them play at Pine Knob or even at Freedom Hill before I die. I moved back to my home state of Michigan at the end of 2011 after my kids Mom passed in Florida and I have taken them to some concerts. My Son and I saw the new versions of the Rocket's my Son got some Autographs and a shirt I got the shirt but I did not get the Maxi CD and I regretted it ever since. I hope that artists always put out albums, CDs and digital as I know they can exist successfully. I plan on getting Steve Farner's album and CD as well so I always have the music with me. The very last comment is the most important and that is the complete discography that Steve and the Band left behind. Every time I was driving back home from Florida the Song "I'm getting closer to my home (I'm your captain)" would start playing and my heart would start playing on the radio. I always got greeted by that song and it was always emotional for me. My kids noticed as I was driving the large moving truck the last time we came home. On Telegraph Road before Dixie Highway for the longest time the train overpass said Grand Funk Railroad because Grand Trunk Railroad was altered. I even liked your version of the Loco Motion song, even though my mother played the 45 over and over when I was young. Can't wait to grab the new music. God bless you both

Took him 55 years to get closer? Maybe needs a new Captain...🤷‍♂Seriously though, should be a good show -'supplements' the ongoing GFR album series that Grant's been doing over at Grant's Rock Warehous. I've read that this album is due out on Nov 8: "...the long-awaited, new album from legendary guitarist and singer/songwriter Mark Farner. Bridging past and present, the grit of industry and the calloused hard work of a rural man, “Closer to My Home” champions Farner’s multi-faceted artistry. Celebrating the 55th anniversary of the iconic hit “(I’m Your Captain) Closer To My Home” the album is highlighted with a re-record, finding Farner in exactly the same form as 1970"

Interesting that my favourite 2 GFR records are basically his, although not in the order he gives & I'd likely put E Pluribus Funk third. Still, he named 2 albums I love as also being his favourites. I couldn't help noticing a familiar old guitar in the background behind him. Don't have time to watch the full interview tonight. I always thought going on the road with Humble Pie is what inspired "E Pluribus Funk" to be as hardcore as the second album. The two albums that followed Grand Funk 2, "Closer To Home" and "Survival" were a little too mellow in spots---but they need to get back to raw high energy, so they did that with "E Pluribus" because of the influence of Humble Pie and that Gibson SG---shame they didn't continue on the same path and the same guitar

I don't know if he's serious or joking about 432 Hz tuning thing but it's woo woo stuff about it being more "natural". Intervals are still tuned with 12 tone equal temperament system anyway which is a compromise to be able to play in any key without sounding too off from harmonic series.
