    What’s kind of funny is that in the late 00’s, image got back up a little bit and these days at least it’s kind of regarded as a great avenue for creator owned worked, with a lot of successful titles like Walking Dead, Invincible and a lot of others published under their banner.

    You can't forget Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles was a big influence on Image comics. The original TMNT was gritty, bloody and extreme (it was just missing half-naked female heroes floating in the air in swimsuit poses). It was an independent comic studio. It landed a merchandising deal that became a massive cultural hit. And the royalties went straight to the creators. Superstar comic artists at the Big Two must have looked at the overnight success of TMNT/Mirage and wanted that for themselves, which led to leaving the Big Two and founding Image. Hell, even the spelling and definition of Image is similar to Mirage

    On the other hand, Neil Gaiman's SANDMAN came out in the '90s, and that's going to hold up a lot better than most superhero comics from previous eras.

    I remember this. My aunt and uncle owned Parody Press, which was a minor publisher making such titles as Adolescent Radioactive Black-Belt Hampsters (in which they got to work with the amazing Sam Kieth) and various parodies of the Punisher, Batman, Star Wars, and other popular genres. Later they worked with Entity Comics, producing such tiles as Zen Intergalactic Ninja and Nira X Cyberangel with Bill Maus. They did pretty well for themselves for many years but the comics crash took them out of the business. My uncle now sells real estate and beyond the occasional project and the friends he made in the industry, he isn't involved in it at all anymore.
    So yeah, the crash not only hurt the big publishers, it destroyed the little ones.

    The Image creation story sounds really similar to the creation of Activision: founded by game programmers who quit Atari because of lack of recognition and royalties; and that survived the infamous 1983 videogame crash that happened about 4 years after.

    This all being said, Image Comics are still big proponents of creator's rights, and have continued to regularly publish original works by creators who aren't (yet) big names, often stuff you'd never see coming out of Marvel or DC (like one of my current favorites, _Alex + Ada_).

    Always had a soft spot for 90's comics. Growing up in the early 00's they were all I could get my hands on at 2nd hand bookstores(no comic book stores in aus) and a friend of my dad's once gave me a huge box full of mid 90's Image, Valiant and X Men comics. Been a long time since I read any of them but for 10 year old me they were a lot of fun.

    It also didn't help the comic market, that the comic companies became greedy idiots, that also started their stupid @ssed trend of "Constantly raising their comic book prices on all of us comic readers all the time back then" I used to spend about $40 a month back in that time in the 90's on comic books (figure roughly 32- (Standard issue comics) not including any 'anniversary', or 'special issue/editions' that would also come out) at the beginning of the 90's), but then later completely gave up on all of them & the industry, once I found that the $40 wasn't even able to get me even close to 15-(standard) comics anymore...
    The industry got greedy as all hell (in a very bad way back then), and burned most of us comic readers into ditching them over their abusive greed tactics that they kept hitting us with constantly as the 90's went on into the 2000's and beyond ((And yet they still haven't realized that they need to reverse the BS greedy pricing issue's that they've been shooting themselves in the foot with, as they continue to chase off parts of their fanbase bit by bit, with their ill-advised products price hikes...)) They are truly some serious dumb @sses, and are only gonna succeed at eventually completely killing off the entire industry if they still keep this crap up...
    Its sad.... (~_~)'

    If Marvel and DC had just allowed different divisions and treated their writers and artists work fairly, I think both could have contributed greatly. They act as if there is no trust in business.
    As I stated on another video: 90s comic era was a hit or miss, but it did bring in a lot of new styles that were other wised unknown due to the mindset that comics 'had to be' made with children in mind.

    True, during the Golden Age there were quite a few deaths. However, during the Silver Age there was this long period of time where nobody important ever died. This was changed during the Bronze Age where they began to resume with killing off characters, though only for the purpose of further driving the story.
    But when the 90's came around, they started killing off Superheroes left and right just so they could sell more comics. It wasn't for enhancing the story, it was just to make more money.

    OK, can someone please explain to me why in the US there are more and more people who seem to HATE the guts of "Friends"? I don't ask that ironically. I really want to know.
    I'm from Europe (Spain, to be precise, but I've lived in Germany and I'm currently in the UK), and here the show is considered an all time classic.
    This year is the 10th anniversary of the show's end, and I've seen lots of articles here that remember the show fondly, while from the US what I hear more often than not is "WHAT THE F*** WAS WRONG WITH US?!!"
    In Europe the characters are considered timeless and universal, hence why they could smash cultural barriers with stunning ease. However, American detractors accuse the show of being nothing but trendy dribble.
    That contrast doesn't compute for me.

    • @Vebinz
      @Vebinz 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      It was probably the biggest show in the later 90's.
      So if someone hates "the 90's", they'll likely hate "Friends" too.

    • @75aces97
      @75aces97 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't doubt that it was popular, and might well remain so for a while. But it was dumbed down schlock. It's fine to set a show about culturally and politically illiterate young professionals if that's the premise, and you set it somewhere like Cleveland, as the Drew Carey show did during the same period, and it rang true. But comedy requires a certain baseline of authenticity. Seinfeld and Frasier worked as exercises in manners and character eccentricities. Friends was a dramedy, where the viewer is asked to care about characters when there's nothing below the surface. It takes place in New York, but the characters are too shallow, insipid, and anti-intellectual. Shows tend to age better when their characters think, talk and act believably like the place where they live.

      Valiant was killed by the people that today is making millions of dollars with Deadpool and all that bullshit.
      Google "Deathmite", which killed off Valiant Comics while Rob Liefeld was giving interviews boasting about his original Conan sword and the mansion he bought.

    • @TheBabylonBurning
      @TheBabylonBurning 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Deathmate*
      But yeah Valiant was one of the biggest positives of 90s comics. Same idea as Image (creators having full control of their work), but the titles were actually good, told good stories, and unlike Image kept to their schedules. In fact the latter was one of the company's major selling points. One of the cool tuings about the original Valiant was that the stories in their titles happened in real time, meaning a title released monthly would skip ahead a month for the next issue etc.
      Sadly Valiant made the big mistake of doing a crossover with Image (the aforementioned Deathmate) cause crossovers made big money. They kept their quality and tight schedule for the portions of the event they did. Image not so much. The fallout from lack of sales literally killed the company. They made a pretty decent comeback a couple of years ago though.

    I have thought about revamping the marvel and dc universes in my own way but considering the amount of history involved I would want to start in the 90s(also cause I have a personal fiction that takes place their) also both universes would go back to golden age times and most characters would appear in their debut time periods, thought some might change for plot convince And considering what happened in the 90s and since then I decided to do what many won’t and only a few do. Have time pass and have the characters age. Eventually both universe collide as part of a crisis on infinite earths/secret wars hybrid even in 1984 that would leave all superhero teams from both universe devastated. With all this in mind you can deduced most of the celebrity heroes will either be be middle aged or in their twilight years. To fix this I would have employee one of two ideas both involved the blood heirs and based of alma gam comics.
    1: The children and grand children of each respective heroes band together to form a new team.
    Or
    2: A new team of heroes is formed from hybrids with one marvel hero for a parent or grand parent on one side and a dc hero for a parent or grand parent on the other. Basically amalgam comics done naturally.
    It would be dark, twisted, gory, scary and intense. Embodying all the dark adult stuff of the 90s. All I would need is to make decision ? What do you think if tried to do this which should I do ?

    Whilce Portacio himself told me that's not what happened. They just saw Marvel as a middle man, they learned to skip and a way to not have editors nagging over their shoulders about creative choices.
    Plus, royalties were a thing fought by Neal Adams (prominently) since the late '70s. We got them ever since (on the sales of our work and a bonus for newly created characters). I should know because I have created characters for Marvel and received those checks.
    True, many of the founders of Image messed up their own characters, but they did give home to a second generation of creators and titles now considered true master and classics: Moore with Strangers in Paradise, Busiek with Astro CIty, Smith with Bone, and Larsen is still today producing Savage Dragon himself, after 23 years.

  • @NickEnlowe
    @NickEnlowe 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    It's simpler than that. Early-to-mid 1995, the modern age ended and the post-modern age began (although DC arguably held out for a few more years). In 1995, stories stopped being heroic and started being destructionist far beyond the alleged 'Dark Age' of comics, throwing old superheroes and their legacies in the garbage and replacing them with new regressive heroes. Don't forget, people were still buying AND READING comics around the time of Phalanx Covenant and Knightfall...and enjoying it.
    It was the garbage crap that came immediately after that killed comic books. That was when people stopped reading and stopped caring. Also, you can't make fun of flashy foil covers of the 90s then go off and buy every limited, exclusive, and alternate cover art for today's comics, or you're a hypocrite. (The speculative bubble and alternate covers are still going on now, and are even worse than before thanks to the MCU.)
    tl;dr: While the speculative bubble didn't help, bad, regressive writing in 1995 directly caused the crash to happen in 1996.

    That almost sums up the comics period of the 90s with some exclusions (I.E. Diamond Distributors taking comics out of mainstream stores and into comic stores, the bad grrls era that brought us Lady Death and Witchblade, a more detailed view into Image Comics implosion, and the fall of Marvel when it declared bankruptcy). Still, there were some gems within the dung pile of 90s comics. The rise of Vertigo Comics, Astro City, Bone, Star Man, and other great 90s comics deserve an episode or two.

    so the 90s were bad because there was no cultural progress? Id rather that than the stupidifying technology fads that came on the 21st century.
    Also the 90s was the golden age for CAZADOR (de aventuras), when argentinian comics were dying, this comic revived them by bringing the most repulsive guy with superpowers you can imagine.

    It's cool to hate on the 90s as a comic book fan these days. But as a comic book fan from the 80s/90s, I can say with absolutely first-hand certainty that it was a freaking blast! The kids LOVED the super star artists and the over-the-top depictions of their favorite heroes. Yes, speculation crashed the industry, but that doesn't mean that the kids weren't having a sh*t ton of fun (the non-fan investors were probably miserable though). We had Lee, Liefeld (and yes, we ALL absolutely LOVED Liefeld ... and nobody gave two hot sh*ts about his inability to draw feet), Silvestri, Booth, McFarlane, Platt, Tex, the list goes on and on and on ... Image was HOT, and Valiant was tempting for the more sophisticated fans at school, lol. Bottom line, fans were having a ton of fun and that's all that should matter.

    It's interesting that you say that Image's "dream of a sustainable independent full challenger to Marvel and DC was never fully realized" when Image has mostly washed away it's 90s rep and replaced Vertigo as the "true mature comics publisher." Just Walking Dead alone makes it a competitor to DC and Marvel.

    Although I've never been that into comics, I must say this early-90's history of the industry has me intrigued.
    It seemed like it was a pretty interesting time to be collecting these things.
    And even though most comic fans have told me that Image Comics and the books they made were trash, this video has me thinking that it might be worth my time to track some of them down and take a look.
    After all, it makes no sense that ALL the books they made were bad. There had to be some good in there.

    Even with their bullshit, the 90's were awesome. I remember reading the comics when they came out and loving them. Yes, I was ignorant and I now know better, but bad comic art is such an integral part of that decade for better or worse. I imagine that in the future people will say "wow, people really liked that 2010's realistic art?" Since every "trend" repeats itself, I can foreshadow those horrible drawings re-surfacing again in the mainstream lol

    • @Changetheling
      @Changetheling 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Why should they? It's the same names that made their names a trademark to cash up to this day.
      The notable exception being Todd McFarlane that, despite his intentions with Marvelman/Miracleman rights, has accomplished 25+ years of Spawn.
      Meanwhile, Rob Liefeld, being called "an artist" by the ignorant masses so desperate to watch a Deadpool film is still swimming in money made with closed studios and frauds he committed.

    That was really good. I was a bit surprised that you didn't explain that the reason Marvel filed for bankruptcy was because they tried to break free of Diamond and do their own distribution.
    Also, the 90s was the era when comics companies pulled the plug on selling comics in grocery stores for the direct market. I still don't honestly understand the rationale on that one. I think it had something to do with creators wanting higher quality paper or something. I don't get it, tho. It was dumb.

  • @CArchivist

    The '90's is when I started reading comics & they didn't suck. Comics were at their peak & the X-men were awesome. The only downside was that comics were at their peak & ppl got obsessed with making money by investing in comics. So a lot of stuff was done to make a bunch of comics that were supposed to be valuable. With that said there were a bunch of deaths & rebirths, as well as variant covers & tons of comics produced.

    This is a good example of why I don't get along with other comic fans. They hate the 90s comics despite the 90s having the the largest comic sales ever. It's the same mentality of people that like a band when they are underground and as soon as they get big and popular and mainstream they hate them even though they haven't changed their sound. It's that entitlement that something belongs to them, and them only. Also they seems to hate great artist. Once again I think this goes back to the 80s and 90s when hot artist were selling millions of issues. Once again that resentment of success and mainstream status. I do agree that art became more important then story during this time and that was a problem, but why can't we have good art and good stories the best of both worlds? I for one hate bad artists and when comic books have art that looks like a colouring book or a newspaper cartoon strip it's a big fail I expect detailed art and better quality from comic books then these other lazy mediums. Last it seems comic fans like lame costumes. When you see superhero movies on the big screen now they usually change the costumes slightly, they look less ridiculous. In comics though the more ridiculous and boring a costume the more the traditional fans like it. The 40s, 50s, 60s, and 70s, is over. No one wants campy conservative vanilla superheroes anymore. Society is different and superheroes should reflect that. Seemed like they started going in the right direction in the 80s and 90s but went back to simple conservative vanilla in the 2000s to present day.
