      But how is this racist though? Genuine question. Isn't a racist act defined as something that is discriminatory towards people of a certain race? I don't see how this chant is in any way suggesting that black people are inferior or anything of the sort. I can see how it's extremely disrespectful to suggest that those players aren't french, when they absolutely are, but where's the actual racism here? Why the assumption that there wouldn't be a similar chant even if all the players were white? If all those players were white, and there was a chant questioning whether they should/shouldn't be playing for a specific country, would that be racist? My point is, this chant doesn't seem directioned so much at the color of their skin, but at the fact that those players are descendants from another continent - which of course is a silly argument because all of them were born in France. Again, I just don't see how this is racist.
      Are we not actively changing the definition of racism nowadays? I just feel like we should be somehow using a different word to describe all of this and not compare this chant to legitimate acts of racism out there, and I find it wrong that people who genuinely believe black people are inferior are getting lumped together with these football players who are just being dumb and chanting some childish stuff to suggest that "hey, this country sucks so hard that they need to recruit their talent from other parts of the world".

  • @uxigadur

    Hi from Argentina.
    We were doing ok, so naturally someone had to do something stupid. Makig this clear first, i think people in Europe has no idea how football culture is here, and maybe in southamerica (but, i haven't been checked). It is not nice. it has a beautiful side, but also a very ugly one.
    To me the songs was bad, but, yeah, just bad. it might surprise, but it is so because i have heard many worse things. Football is a popular sport, but often that means a medium for poor people to rise. or free frustration and anger. And many fans do not have a good education. And there is a frontier mentality in which people denigrate others just to be on the good side of the line.
    But as strange as it might sound many people just sing the songs and don't think too much about it. They don't have any plan or agenda. Nobody take the songs seriously, maybe they should. But as far as they know there is no damage. There are fans singing derogatory songs that coudl be apply to them easily. Fans talking shit about a country only to cheer for it once a star for that country score a goal for their team.
    Just in case someone don't get it, yes, the song is bad.
    Now if you ask many argentinias the will tell you, how can France complain? they treat inmigrants like shit and use it only for sport when they are good enough. And say that is the point of ths song. In part is the point, but two seconds of good thought would make you think you shouldn't sing taht because someone might feel bad about it.
    But terrible bad, awful songs are not a wird ocurrence, are just main stream in football culture. Very sadly so. And for many good people this is so normalized they won't notice what they are doing.
    And it is not gonna change soon, because the economy and society in Argentina is not Europe. Maybe, with time.

    • @coralpilled
      @coralpilled หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Well said, it really does seem more just ignorant and stupid than outright malicious. I'm American but my girlfriend's family is from Argentina so I have some familiarity with the culture there and it does seem to line up with how common references to things like race are. Not that it's right but I think people need to understand it's just not the same as in Europe or the USA. And yeah, it does feel awfully hypocritical from France especially after the incident where Griezmann and Dembele were being openly and maliciously racist to Japanese hotel employees and the French FA did absolutely nothing and everyone has just let them move on from that with almost no consequences.

    Dumb move obviously, even dumber to broadcast. However, we must remember this all anti-Mbappe thing started because Mbappe declared South Americans and their football to be "less advanced", which Argentines took issue with. Imagine if the roles were reversed or possibly directed at another continent, and we would never hear the end of it. Also, and I know that I'll catch flak for this, but there's somewhat of a point in the song (minus the historical error of Angola, who were a Portuguese colony). I don't think it's necessarily derisive to Africans, but more so to France for not being able to develop their own talent and having to steal players from their former colonies to compete. Obviously the France case is more complex, but it can be viewed as similar to when small oil rich states suddenly naturalize several Brazilians. The point is that France cannot compete legitimately. I think there's a strong case to be made that France, after centuries of subjugating Africans, stealing their natural resources, and then drawing arbitrary border lines and leaving countries in abject poverty and disarray are continuing to steal from these former colonies by way of taking their players. I'm sure the Ivory Coast would love to have some of their players back, but France has pipelines to steal their players due to colonialization. To draw an American parallel, it's a bit like when the rich private school comes in and lures all the best athletes away from the underfunded public schools. So long story short, I think the song is meant to talk bad about France, not the African players they use.

      You mean people coming from French-speaking countries who may also have family already living in France deciding to live in France for economic or political reasons, spending the majority of their lives in France if not outright being born there is somehow “stealing from their former colonies”
      I’m an American with ancestors who immigrated from Poland, doesn’t that somehow make me less American?
      Yeah maybe Mbappé shouldn’t have said that about South American football, but two wrongs don’t make a right.
      And again this was targeted not just at Mbappé but also at the French National Team in general.
      Why weren’t their chants about Greizmann being born in Basque Country?
      The chants weren’t “Hey, look how cool it is that France has a lot of players of African descent” it was “lol they claim to be French but have parents in Africa”
      I’m pretty sure the Argentine National Team weren’t singing a Polemic about the history of French Colonialism and the damage it caused.

    • @ayooo9770
      @ayooo9770 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@furrymemelady622 Yes, you managed to hit the nail on the head. Why did those French speaking people move to France for economic/political reasons? Because the French who were there made it to where their home countries could not stand on their own two feet economically or politically. And if you want to bring up your Polish ancestry, then yes it does make you less American. There was a whole race of people here before all of us that I would argue are the true Americans. We all may be Americans on paper, but those who were here first have the strongest claim to being "from here", and I would say the same for people of Italian descent who live in Argentina. But those two comparisons are different to France and its former colonies. Poland was at no point under the rule of the United States, while the places France draws upon were. And while I'm unsure of the Argentine national team's familiarity with French colonial history, we don't really know the intention behind the song. It could really be that they are going after players for being of African descent. But what I think is more likely (given the lyric of "but their passports say French") is the song is saying that France has taken all of these players, given them a passport, and let them play. Obviously the validity of that is questionable, but for some reason everyone seems to have jumped to the conclusion that the Argentine players have a deep seated hatred towards Africans.

They are poking "fun" at the amount of Africans in the French team, which I guess can be seen as offensive but it is a fact that France has many immigrants no matter if you find the chant offensive or not. (the word you is meant as in anyone). Regarding the being French part. There is a difference between being French and being ethnically French. If you speak French, work in France and love France, you a Frenchman. But that does not make you ethnically French. The thing I genuinely believe we humans have a problem with is that we seek a solution to things that have no solutions. Africans will always be Africans genetically, ofc only until they mate with non Africans, then after generations some genetics will disappear. But regardless, no matter skin color we are all human. Though the fact that some people will have a prejudice towards skin color or ethnicity is something that will always exist. Rivalry has been a part of the human history forever.
