Not what we had in mind when we bought the farm!

  • It is time to cut the hay again. It seams like every time we do this we are moving further back in time. In this video we are making hay as they did in the 18th century. That is how we intended to run this farm. We normally use our trusty old grass cuter from the 40s but every year it has become more unreliable. This year we gave it a massive grade with new paint, a complete overhaling of the fuel and air systems but we did not manage to get the engine to run as it should. We give it one more try before we take our brand new scythe and cut the entire field by hand. Now I know why they where stronger in the old days.
We normally dry the second batch in an old Norwegian way called hesjing. That is when we dry the hay on metal wires that run from pole to pole. A bit like drying cloths. Now this time the conditions are good for drying on the ground but there is one problem with that. A row of trees is casting long shadows as the sun do not go as high on the sky this late in the summer. We get the permission from our neighbor to lay the trees on his field and so we also need to clear those. That is a massive job.
Me and my wife bought a 100 year old farm 8 years ago. We love to work on this farm and bring it back from the decaying state it was left in by the previous owners. Our goal is to make this small farm / small holding or homestead into a self sufficient paradise for us and our kids. We love old farming techniques and fell in love with the lifestyle of country living.

"as they did in the 18th century"... I wish. We still used a hand scythe to mow our steepest hills and the orchard with the apple trees in the 1990 and onward. We had a self driving sickle mower like you have, just a bigger one, and a big drum mower for the tractor to do the big fields. We even had a motorized scythe, basically a "weed whacker", but bigger. We used a cutting blade and not a string to cut grass with it. But the old hand scythe still had it's place even on a modern farm. Me and granpa both prefered the hand scythe, while my dad and brother preferred the motorized one. For me it was too heavy, uncomfortable and loud. Once you got the right technique down to use the hand scythe, and it was properly sharpened (we always had a scythe whetstone on the belt to quickly resharpen in the field) it was still faster than the motorized scythe. Me and my older brother actually had a competition going on who could cut more in the same time 😅

You need to put your left arm under the handle of you scythe and grab it from the bottom. That will be more comfortable and you won't tire as easily.

Ja, det var ikke dumt.👍 Har tenkt flere ganger på å lage slike, men har ikke egentlig noe plass å henge det. Mulig det blir plass når løer en dag er gjennombygget. 😊

I make hay every year with a scythe. It's a modern tool and the most effective one for the job at a small scale. Not a museum piece. Much cheaper and less faff than an unreliable old machine.

I know many that prefer that tool and are good with it.👍 I cannot say the same as I have little to no practice. I think it is good to have it as a backup plan but I would prefer to get the mower working again. 🤠

Well done, you got it done! I was exhausted just watching you. I hope you can get the engine running before you need it again. Best wishes

Thanks, it always gives me a good feeling every time I see all that hay and know that we are done for this year. I don’t thing it would be the same if I did not have to work for it. 🤠😊

If the machine runs the coil is good, It wont affect the idle.. I would try to adjust the carburettor and or look for air leaks somewhere on the intake side... The carburettor might also still be clogged
