He is of Ghanaian origin. His birth name is Georginio Gregion Emile Boateng. He removed the Ghanaian name “Boateng” as his surname a long time ago. He once went with the family name Georginio Boateng and not Georginio Wijnaldum. Following his mother's divorce, he took her maiden name (Wijnaldum). His biological dad is Ghanaian Surinamese.

I found this about him: While he was at PSV Eindhoven in 2013, Wijnaldum revealed he changed his last name from Boateng to Wijnaldum.
He explained that after his step-father divorced his mother, he took his mother's last name.
“I want to put on record that I am now Georginio Wijnaldum not Georginio Boateng, in fact I have been known as George Wijnaldum for four years now,” he stated as reported by Goal.
“Boateng was the name of my former step father who is related to retired Dutch footballer of Ghanaian-origin George Boateng.
