Old video, and probably ancient version of GIMP, but one can always learn something. I've seen this done before, but as you say, not all videos describe the steps fully. Your description is very clear. Thank you.
All I can say Tom is thank you! I absolutely 'get' GIMP and use it a lot, but had always battled to understand layer masking. I watched countless videos, but always got muddled and lost. Yesterday I watched this vid of yours and ... for some reason what you explained, and how you explained it, set off a light bulb in my head. Again my sincere thanks. Nick
Thanks for the kind comment. No I did not create Gimp. I'm a tutor at a seniors' computer club. Each week I give a lesson on using Gimp. Some I make a TH-cam video. While most of the lessons have all ready had TH-cam tutorials by others I try to cover some that have not been covered.
Excellent! Solved the problem I had with pasting backgrounds. Thanks, much more simple than many of the other guys babbling and changing minds here and there making things confusing. Nice step by step, wrote them down, excellent procedure. ;-)
Just got back into GIMP after being bitterly frustrated by so called "artists" who wanted my business for a book cover. They make me use photoshop at work. Thanks for the tutorial I really needed it.
..I have used GIMP for 3yrs now, and every little bit helps...but it always seems that everyone uses this tool like a 'photoshop' extention, and I have yet to see 'original compositions' utilizing most of what GIMP has to offer. I am a member of their registry, and that helps, but photos and original art are two different things. Thank you so much for your input.
I'm so happy because I found this in pdf formats. Thank you for makeing them.I know, You work hard and you share them. I have no words...maybe sound limited....but...Thank you, sir!
Thank you very much for putting in your so much time and effort. I'm glad I found your channel and website. I've bookmarked your site and subscribed to you.
Ive been pulling my hair out trying to figure this out but thanks to your tutorial on how to do it I was finally able to finish my project. And I watched a ton of videos already that didnt help. Thank you Sir! :-)
Thanks for the video! You were right, I saw a few other videos and didn't get the desired effect I was looking for. Thanks to your video I realized that I needed to add an Alpha Channel! Thanks again.
Thank you so much this is the best tutorial ever! FINALLY I get it! Subscribed! And you are beyond awesome for providing a pdf file of the instructions too, wow.
Thank you. I didn't know you could paste in them link as the mask like that. I'm a pet photographer, and I use Darktable with only occasional recourse to GIMP. I have a particular photo where the dog moved, I moved and shot, the consequence being a white board is partially beyond the upper right of the dog (on a black leather couch). If you're interested in doing a video on that one to insert a texture background instead if the couch and board, I'd be interested in your approach. A friend who's in a professional pet photography forum has done the edit in PhotoShop for me because I didn't know how in GIMP.
I tried it on multiple tree photos with lighting and shadows but unfortunately, I couldn’t get it to work. The video is still great because the concept still works.
I tried your technique for most images I found it effective. On images where the portion I want keep is on a similar coloured background when I invert the colours there is no definition black on black or white on white and I can't see where to paint. Any suggestions.
I am so glad I found you..I've been buying png transfers for my projects..now I can finally get those pesky white backgrounds out...Thanks for taking the time to make the tutorials...I usual have gimp open and listen to your direction I don't have the toolbar like yours on the right I thought I downloaded the latest version..2.8 is there a way to open it so it's visible like ours.
A Very well-executed tutorial! I did notice one mistake though (I've been making graphics and touching photos for quite a while): the water did not reflect the replaced sky. There are a few tutorials for that fix as well, but other than that, a wonderful job!
Hi, this was a very helpfull video for me. I have a question about this technique. I make photo's of clothes for my webshop and use this technique. But when I have a white shirt or pants this technique is difficult. Can you give some tips for the brightness/contrast?
I love this tutorial!! Just one question... My new background I've chosen isn't big enough to cover the background of my picture... how do I make it larger?
+Jennifer Goshe Take a note of the foreground image size, listed at the top of Gimp's screen. Load the background layer as a Layer. Go to Layer on the menu bar and click Scale Layer.Click the chain to unlink it then type in the Width & hight of the foreground layer & click Scale.
Thanks for the comment on my youtube video tutorial. The tutorial is quite old but every thing still applies. The only thing with the latest Gimp is you Export your image instead of Save.
@@235bluefox i have a question to that tutorial. what if my background color is too similar to my objext I want to keep? are there better methods then? By the way I am surprised that you still react to a comment after a year ^^

Thank you Tom! Such an easy and thorough explanation! You are awesome : )
Thanks for the tips Tom, the small details make a difference ;)
Thanks for your comment. Click on show more, the last link is remove the background with flowing hair which shows the procedure with fine tuning.
Great stuff. Thanks for the tutorial.
Thank you, this will help with my Lighthouse image... there’s a complex rail on it, I tried masking the sky, and ended up in fringeville...
Very nice tutorial! Thank you.
I like this, good job.
Did you consider using Threshold instead of Desaturate?
Yes I agree with you, using [Threshold] removes 4 steps in the procedure but you can lose some of the fine detail. Thanks for your suggestion.
Tom
Thank you Mr. Bland, this was very, very helpfull!
THANK YOU SO MUCH! THIS SAVED ME SO MUCH TIME. :D
Does this only work on solid fill backgrounds? Only, I'm having a little trouble applying the technique to complicated backgrounds like grass
Yes it should work using the Layer Mask, check my other videos, 'Remove Background with flowing hair' and 'Background remove for subscribers'
Well done tutorial. Thank you.
Great tutorial. Thank you for making it!
Outstanding video sir. It helped a lot.
