I am a professional photographer, the poor video quality seems to be caused by light striking the lens from the side. The solution is to create a shadow on the lens with a non-reflective shield like a piece of cardboard just like the brim of a hat shields your eyes. The technical term for this problem is called "Lens Flare" you notice the same effect if your car's wind shield is dirty and becomes difficult to see through when driving towards the sun or oncoming head lights. I am thinking about purchasing a similar lathe but it has a bent shaft on the cross slide. I am hoping to see this part disassembled in your video.
